Adding DMX to a cheap fog machine!

  • I add DMX control capability to a cheap fog machine using only items I found in my home.
⚠️ This project comes dangerously close to high voltage. Don't do anything you see unless you are comfortable and qualified! ⚠️
This Chauvet Hurricane 700 - circa 2010 - uses an IEC C13 inlet on its chassis to connect its included "FC-M" model wired remote control. I create a "replacement" remote control interface that features DMX control of the unit using an Arduino-based microcontroller to speak DMX and control a relay. This replacement "remote" gets its power from the fog machine's remote control port, which supplies 120 volt mains power to the remote! I investigate the supplied remote control, prototype a circuit to control it, and create a printed circuit board (PCB) to house the final version.
This is meant to be a silly/fun project, please don't take it too seriously. Would I use this on a professional job or connect it to my expensive lighting console directly? Nope.

First, great music selection for this video. I liked that used what you had to do this. I was thinking about doing something like this for a couple of fog machines exactly like the ones you used. Since I no longer have such "stuff laying around the house" to accomplish this my solution was to order a DMX addressable relay assembly and a power supply for it and add 3.5 mono jacks to the "fog machine remote" and the output from the DMX board relay and use a 3.5mm to 3.5 mm two wire patch cable to connect the two. I really liked that you used the fog's machine remote output to supply the power to your circuit. Great idea. Had I seen this video many years ago I would have been heading down to Radio Shack to purchase some components. LOL. Think the era of Heathkit stores and Radio Shack component isles.... LOL.. I miss those days in a lot of ways where this level of building was seemingly more popular. Thanks for taking me on a trip down memory lane.

Amazing work and great video explaining it! Would be amazing if you sell this as a kit, I would definitely buy one.

how are you ment to set the dmx adress on the fog machine?

but then how would you do it on a lighting console if you werent on a pc@@mashzmash
