This was written for a festival in Berlin, the music was later used in the play "Happy End" with a different set of different lyrics by Bertolt Brecht. I forget the title, but the english title is Hosannah Rockefeller.
It is called "Hosiannah Rockefeller" in German but I'm not sure if it was later used in Happy End. Weill wrote all the Happy End stuff in 1928, I guess he may used a variation of his Rockefellersong for the festival because of missing some composing time?
@@Raphilan The song was the finale from "Happy End." Its lyrics ridiculed capitalism and capitalists, and were perceived as blasphemous as well, which angered the opening night audience, as did Elizabeth Hauptmann reading from a Marxism pamphlet onstage. The lyrics stated: "Hosanna Rockefeller, Hosanna Henry Ford, Hosanna coal and steel and oil, Hosanna God's own Word!"
@@Raphilan The BERLIN IM LICHT festival commenced on 15 October 1928. The well-known cabaret artist and actor Paul Graetz performed the Berlin im Licht song, which was written by Brecht and Weill. Happy End opened in Berlin on September 2, 1929.
from cd, ensemble modern sung by H K Gruber (also a composer, e.g. music for film 'Dracula'...) the cd has a good collection of Weill's Berlin time songs, see Amazon for cd (sold out)
Det is keen lauschiges Plätzchen, Det is 'ne ziemliche Stadt.
