I married an Egyptian 4 years ago but did not move there and i resonate a lot with the language part, but believe me, it gets much better and you’ll be surprised by how much you’ll progress. I could speak basic Arabic after 1,5h year but could understand much more without expressing myself. But after 2 to three years I was so surprised about how much I could speak an converse and understand basically everything, there are just a few vocabs missing here and there. So hang on with it, you’ll be surprised. Especially since you are IN the country.

I am a second generation immigrant and was born and raided in England. My ethnicity is Somali but my parents don’t really speak the language often at home so I am really poor in communicating. But I’ve recently wanted to change that and like you, have been pushing myself to become closer to my identity and form connections with other Somali people. I know the struggle is so hard but day by day, no matter how small it seems like you’re progressing- a drop a day will fill up an into a bucket without you even realising! I think it’s extremely difficult especially growing up in the west to learn to rely on others when everything we hear “don’t rely on nobody” especially as women. I recognize that’s being vulnerable and letting people help you is important but it makes me feel so guilty how come I’m unable to do it myself for myself 😢.
