It's about natural colors in a recording, you can change color tones yourself after the recording, if needed. You can see that the professional camera they use is more in sync with the Pixel than the over saturated iPhone recordings.
But it’s fine when pixel over-sharpen & over-contrast their still images. And notice the dynamic range on the iphone xs, you cant recover overexposed areas in the pixel, and the iphone xs has so much more details.
@@evanjones5257 You can desaturate, but cannot recover lost information from crushed shadows tho. I was expecting to see the iPhone performing HDR on video a bit better. Sounds amazing tbh. Pixel mics are not on par.
They recently fixed the audio of the Pixel 3 in a _software_ update, if you can believe that. The colors on the Pixel are also more realistic, but one big issue for me is the awful slow motion it has. The iPhone is ahead in that area.
Gotta love how people are hung up on audio from the phone. Here is a tip, go a more professional route and use external mics or even better yet, use externals and an audio recording device. Until you have used it in a more professional manner, please give up complaining about the audio.
I feel the iphone has way better sharpness, contrast, and color in the native app. But I would like to see footage from both that's been edited. The Pixel 3 looks like it has a super flat color profile which makes me think it may have way better dynamic range for post processing.

The colors of any image or video are easily changed, things like sharpness, dynamic range, and image stabilization and so forth are much harder to fix in post.
You don't rate a camera based on audio....That's what a mic is for. It's funny how all these "mobile film makers" will spend hundreds of dollars on a phone & stabilizer, but don't know enough about film to grab a $60 mic.
Hez Will I agree audio in film making is best left to external mics, however for a lot of people not looking to become a film maker but wanna take good video for their vacation or an event, the audio quality of the built in microphone is important and a integral part in how good the camera is for them.
Evan van den Berg There's no such thing as "good video" if you don't care to know what you're doing. The average person wants their phone to shoot a Peter McKinnon quality vlog, with no experience required. It'll never happened. Even these guys at Moment use external mics & filmic pro to shoot their vlogs. The fact of the matter is that it takes more than just the phone to get "great" video. The average consumer will slowly understand.
I really dig this hipster style on reviewing electronic gadgets. I got the positive vibes and really fair comparison been made, here. Really nice, and something new!
If I had to pick one to shoot video out of the box with no editing whatsoever I'd go with the XS but a little color grading and I think the Pixel 3 could easily shoot the better video. It's hard to do any kind of color editing with how saturated everything is on the XS. If saturation is what you want you can add it to Pixel 3 in post. Plus that low light on the pixel is amazing. Sticking with the Pixel I think.
Both had their strength and weaknesses. There was moments where i preferred the iPhone over the pixel and the pixel over the iPhone. But what stood out me was how in the darker areas the pixel was brighter and look better. I need that for my video ography
William Fugere sort of. Your not wrong. But it’s more like iPhone has Canon like colors and Pixel has more Nikon/Fujifilm look. Depends on what you like. I’ve just had problems editing Pixel video.
A) You should totally do a cinematic Pixel 3 video! B) As far as the camera goes, I'd always go for the Pixel in terms of overall camera. The colors, sharpness, and HDR are superior as far as photos go. However, for video, you can never go wrong with an iPhone. I think that the Pixel is closing the gap on the iPhone in video, but the iPhone is more reliable if we're focusing purely on video/audio. It has more saturated colors (which is a matter of preference) and is a bit sharper-looking to my eye. Also, it has more native FPS options which is definitely a plus on the video side. I'm the proud owner of both the Pixel 2 XL and iPhone 8 Plus. I use both of them (with a Moment wide) for vlogging. I use FilMiC Pro for both of them, and the iPhone tends to give me better cinematic-looking footage, but I can generally rely on both for a good output. Thanks for reading this far if you did!
Except Pixel has much more accurate and true to life saturation and contrast. And if you want something that doesn't look accurate, but looks cinematic, just edit the pixel footage and make it look however you want. You can't edit footage that is already unrealistic as easily
Definitely IPhone Xs over Pixel 3 for video category - coming from someone who just ordered his pixel and dislikes Apple. But then again, the iPhone X’s costing $200 more than pixel has 2 cameras which is a manufacturing & design cost. Started to love this channel, great work guys :) your own personal opinions are also very much appreciated (like 5:00)
Hey moment guys and gals! Thanks for these comparison videos. They are really awesome and helpful. Would you guys ever do a video compare with a GoPro (I understand that y'all sell accessories for mobile phones 😝) and the best mobile phone for video (iPhone)? It would just be interesting to see how those stack up against each other in regards to video. There are other compares on RUclips but you guys seem to do the best/most extensive comparisons. Appreciate your work and your channel. Thanks!
So I just went to google and searched for "Google Pixel 3 example video," but then realised I'm wasting my time if I'm not watching a moment review. Thanks for being not only the best, but also reliable!
Great video! This is close, iPhone seemed sharper and has more natural color but the Pixel was way better in lower light. The audio was certainly a win for iPhone. Overall winner: iPhone but you wouldn’t go wrong with either. Can’t wait for the new iPhone XS cases to start shipping!
I think the question is: what does the footage look like when you get it into Adobe Premiere and start to mess around with it. The iPhone has more contrast and deeper blacks in the native footage, but do you get burned in the editing room afterward? Pixel may give you more options with color correction later on. Pixel handled low light better for sure.
Would love to see how these phones stack once you do your regular work flow on them. The Pixel looked like a flatter profile vs. the iPhone's so curious to see which one is easier to work on.
As a photographer I'm happy I got the Pixel 3XL. As someone just getting into video I'm sad I don't have the XS. I will say there have been updates to the Google and things have gotten better like the audio.
Just copped the Pixel 3 for $650 on black Friday and saved 4 months worth of phone bills over paying $1000 for a phone with 6 months of RUclips music. And Pixel 3 video doesn't make white people looks orange 😂
Great job as always, although, I do wish you would share your opinion on what and why each camera might be better... The Pixel 3 seems to give a more color accurate and sharper image...? And, even though it overexposes most of the time, that can easily be brought down with the exposure slider or by using filmic Pro... They said they will fix the audio, but we'll see.
Well my iPhone xr is on the way to me now and will be here in an hour. Switching from android to iPhone and will be getting the moment app as ssom as it arrives. Love your videos guys. I think overall the iPhone wins but the pixel 3 sharpness at 200% is much better. Keep the great content comming guys
Have to watch this a couple of times but basically both are awesome 👌🏽 maybe a bit of both can be a perfection. The face shooting is better on XS, it has certain looks. Stabilization seems more stable on Pixel but I like slight imperfections of iPhone XS, it’s film like. Pixel adds lots of smoothing and perhaps brighter but XS seems to have more dynamic range that you can push further in post. Great videos, Moments team!
curious if you get out of the native iPhone app if it's just naturally warmer or if that aspect of it is simply app based. Does it look similar in the Moment app or Filmic Pro? iPhone had the Pixel beat on color depth and sharpness, but its low light is a bit too contrasty and that warm white balance is killing me!
Im feeling the puxel lest contrasty so its flat profile must be great to work with . Ay you guys should vlog more with the phones it suits the purpose of the channel. Stay blessed
I've grown to really enjoy this channel 👍Anyways, at times the iphone seems too dark whereas the pixel is brighter but a little less detailed at times. I guess these days we are nit picking with smartphones haha. I had the itch to get an S10 (for the extra features and screen) but I have a Pixel 3 and really it's photos are too good and it's too hard to leave the pixel lol. 🤙
Huawei p20 pro?? Camera photography or videography at its best with one of the best benchmarks. You guys should test it. I'm sure you'll love it as a photographer. Your products made me stick to the Note 9 even though there's someone (Huawei) who has the abilities to beat all of the brands you support and create for. Your creativity and products does create another level to those flagship phones!! Kudos ✌️
Another thing I think isn't mentioned here. iOS shutter isn't consistant and destroying the image. 2:31 you can see when you go frame by frame, how the skater just gets smeared, where as the Pixel keeps a sharp silhouette.
Pixel 3 for me, I was sold that iPhone are great for videos before but thanks to this video comparison. iPhone produce a ready-to-post video while Pixel 3 need a little bit work with the saturation and the exposure but it gives us more information and so much easier to edit after taking the footage, the iPhone video is already oversaturated, over sharpened but it's ready-to-post. I just wish that that Pixel 3 has that stereo recording yes they can add +$100 to Pixel price I won't mind.
The iPhone definitely has better dynamic range most likely due to its ability to process real-time with the crazy chip, and I believe the footage is easier to work with. Pixel does well in stills because it can take its time to process the photo after the shot is taken, but probably not happening with video...it exposes shadows well but at the cost of blowing out highlights. For audio I think the iPhone in-built mic is very nice, with the Pixel you might want to grab an external mic. Colors don't matter to me as much because I adjust the colors afterwards anyways, and I often use apps like Filmic Pro, in which case what lens and sensor options I get matter much more. Even for stills I still prefer the iPhone for the "what you see is what you get" approach and the telephoto lens (which I use at least twice as often as the main lens, and digital zoom just won't give the right optics for close up shots), but both are very capable and camera definitely shouldn't be the deciding factor anymore with these new phones.
I made it to the end and just wanted to say, unrelated to anything iPhone or Pixel related, your good vibes were a nice change of pace in tech review. Anyway, that Pixel 3 audio is awwwwful. How are you going to make a flagship phone with quality that bad?
Could you guys kindly try filming using iPhone XR!? Cause I’m contemplating whether which one to get, XR or Pixel XL 3. I’m an Apple user ever since and uses MacS
Great test. Felt the Pixel 3 was slightly ahead of iphoneXS. More detail in daylight and low light. And definitely better skin tones with the Pixel 3. Would be interested to know whether the high contrast of the iphone XS created problems for colorist in the grade - generally the higher the contast, the harder it is to manipulate color in post. Guys could you show us the different workflow/storage solutions for shooting a movie in 4K using the same cameras?
What I'd like to know is if the Pixel's footage can be improved in post to make it as punchy as the iPhone XS. The footage looks good, but a bit dull. The iPhone footage has that cinematic look to it, which is all in the box and makes life easier for mobile filmmakers when editing in post. As someone pointed out, it's kinda the opposite in terms of photos. The Pixel is great in low light though. I'd have to give this one to the iPhone. Low light might not be great, but you can always light a scene with artificial lighting and fix things in post production. Nothing beats that cinematic warm tone on the iPhone.
Pixel 3 more true to life, looks more professional and natural. iPhone XS more saturated, sharper colors, though very nice clean picture. Comes down to preference. And depends on scene by scene. Pixel 3 def handles low light way better. Overall both very good choices. As to audio iPhone sounds better although Google claims pixel's "bad" sound is due to noise reduction, maybe it's a matter of getting used to?
I am biassed, but iPhone best for video. Great job in the comparison. It would be great to do the same test shooting in either the Moment app or Filmic Pro to push the sensors. The built in app on both phones have their own biases, iPhone too sharp and saturated, Pixel flat and fuzzy. Great video.
Overall the iPhone did it for me. My biggest gripe is with low lighting but then that can be easily rectified during prep. I own the XS Max and I'm very happy with it. Need to get me the Anamorphic Lens or the Filmmaker Collection for that matter.
The pixel image seemed to be much noisier than the iPhone which was much more apparent with faces. I love the contrast of the iPhone and for out of the box settings, I think the iPhone wins there too. the iPhone's audio is a big step up on what the Pixel has to offer. However, I actually think I'm going to go with the pixel (4) as my next phone. The price tag is a massive plus for the Pixel. I think that - and from what people have confirmed below - is that in post-process, the Pixel's video would be better to work with. Plus, the Pixel has a big step up on the iPhone on the camera for photos. I would have liked to see a comparison between 30fps and 60fps on just the iPhone and then the iPhone shotting 60fps in 4k against the Pixes highest setting of 30fps, just to see how big of a gap in quality there would be. Seems a shame that you left that out when it's a capability of the iPhone. Great comparison video guys. You have a new sub, and I look forward to more videos like this!
Actually, Pixel 3 beats iPhone at the last video scene. But overall yeah, iPhone XS is the beast: better sound quality, more natural brightness & contrast temp....
So this is what i noticed: Colors out of the iPhone really pop, but it's a bit over the top. I like the flatter look out of the Pixel 3 a lot better. The iPhone on the other hand has more dynamic range, you can see that the Pixel 3 starts to clip way earlier, iphone seems to retain the highlights a lot better and has a smoother roll off. The biggest downside of the iPhone is the intense over-sharpening, I think I'd would be interesting to compare these two phones with apps like Filmic Pro with proper log capabilities to see if there is any pre-processing that can tame that behaivor (Pixels harsh Highlights and iPhones awful over sharpening) The reason why I'm mentioning Filmic Pro is, that while your App is gorgeously designed, the log feature on iOS is not at all comparable to Filmic Pro's log v2 or even v1, I hope you'll figure something out, your app looks great and I'd love to it becoming even better! Greetings and keep up, you guys are cool :D
Should we do a cinematic Pixel 3 video!? Also, which phone's footage did you like more?? 🐐
Great Video Thumbs Up 👍 actually who won Pixel phone ?
Moment yes!!🔥
Please do! @Niles @Caleb
Yes sir!
Yes pixel 3 cenimatic
What stands out is the color temp differences and how much the iPhone XS sharpens everything.
totally
Which is interesting considering with photos Pixel sharpens and darkens and iPhone brightens and has less sharpness.
I definitely agree with you..
It's about natural colors in a recording, you can change color tones yourself after the recording, if needed. You can see that the professional camera they use is more in sync with the Pixel than the over saturated iPhone recordings.

IPhone: video

The Pixel has less frame rate/resolution options, but the footage looks so good still!
David Alberto G.H agreed, but in my opinion the difference in photos is much smaller than the difference in video respectively

Pixel 3 - realistic

Kudos means praise and honor received for an achievement. Cheers!
How do you color edit iPhone footage? Out of the phone It looks perfect.
Is there a big difference between pixel 2 and pixel 3 in video?
I am in love with the Pixel 3 cam BUT! I must admit that the IPhone's videos is better.
Great videos Moment Team, can't wait for the next one
Do the iphone xs and iphone xs max have the same camera specs?
Pixel 3 more true to life, looks more professional and natural. iPhone XS more saturated, sharper colors, though very nice clean picture. Comes down to preference. And depends on scene by scene. Pixel 3 def handles low light way better. Overall both very good choices. As to audio iPhone sounds better although Google claims pixel's "bad" sound is due to noise reduction, maybe it's a matter of getting used to?
@peter williams actually no. I think iPhone is way better than note 9. I think iPhone is really good.
I believe noise reduction would be correct. They just fixed the Pixel's audio in a software update.
Still watch in 2020, This video make me buy pixel. This video so interesting even I watch it before
I am biassed, but iPhone best for video. Great job in the comparison. It would be great to do the same test shooting in either the Moment app or Filmic Pro to push the sensors. The built in app on both phones have their own biases, iPhone too sharp and saturated, Pixel flat and fuzzy. Great video.
When is the moments app pro is able to record video for Android?
The iPhone XS with the Pixel 3 snapping at the iPhones heels. The Pixel 3 price may be the deciding factor. Good job.
Thanks Shawn!
How did you shoot 1080p/120fps in the native Pixel camera app? I don't see that option at all.
yea kudos.
what is kudos?
Guys great video...
Could you upload a comparison between the pixel 2 and the pixel 3 ...?
It'll be very helpful to hear your verdict.. Thanks
You have a new sub, and I look forward to more videos like this!
is that a pouch on Calebs backpack that holds moment lenses? NEED THAT!
Actually, Pixel 3 beats iPhone at the last video scene. But overall yeah, iPhone XS is the beast: better sound quality, more natural brightness & contrast temp....
Pixel 3 does not support 4k 24fps. Is it possible to shoot a cinematic movie from a filmic pro application?
Huawei mate 20 pro vs iPhone xs Max video compere which 1 best for filmmaking and for night shot please please make a shot video
Kudos..
So this is what i noticed:
Colors out of the iPhone really pop, but it's a bit over the top. I like the flatter look out of the Pixel 3 a lot better.
The iPhone on the other hand has more dynamic range, you can see that the Pixel 3 starts to clip way earlier, iphone seems to retain the highlights a lot better and has a smoother roll off.
The biggest downside of the iPhone is the intense over-sharpening, I think I'd would be interesting to compare these two phones with apps like Filmic Pro with proper log capabilities to see if there is any pre-processing that can tame that behaivor (Pixels harsh Highlights and iPhones awful over sharpening)
The reason why I'm mentioning Filmic Pro is, that while your App is gorgeously designed, the log feature on iOS is not at all comparable to Filmic Pro's log v2 or even v1, I hope you'll figure something out, your app looks great and I'd love to it becoming even better!
Greetings and keep up, you guys are cool :D
