There is one way to destroy the Book of Vile Darkness forever, and that's if all evil in the multiverse is wiped out. Completely. Then the book does a Thanos snap on itself and is gone forever.

    • @order012
      @order012 4 года назад +40

So you gotta kill/redeem every villain in the material plane. Then go into the inner planes and kill all the evil elementals in it. Then destroy the Shadowfell, Nine Hells, Achreon, Gehenna, Hades, Carceri, the Abyss, Pandemonium and its innately evil inhabitants. Then kill/redeem all the evil gods (including Vecna who wrote the book), and you have to destroy all the evil magic items (some are artifacts).

So it literally only happens if good wins in the cosmic war between good and evil.
But by that point you can probably bet that most or all of the material planes are devoid of sentient life capable of passing on to the outer planes, so there's nothing to save by destroying the book anyway.
Also, the whole point of the blood war in the lower planes is that the forces of evil are 100% certain they're going to win that cosmic war, so they're duking it out now to also establish the winner of the chaos/order conflict. So evil probably wins anyway.

The Scroll Of Perfection: Reading it grants a Ki pool, some monk abilities, sets you a serious of codes to live by, and drains away your emotions, making it easier to follow your codes. You also become immune to aging, gain advantage on all checks you have proficiency in, and don't need food or rest. After ~500 years you ascend into a perfect realm where all things are you, and you are all things. You are unable to act except to defend your perfection from invaders and you may never leave, but why would you want to? You are perfect.
The Sponge: Holding the sponge causes fascination with the infinite possibilities of reality. Each day, squeezing the sponge produces a handful of liquid that appears to be water. Consuming, making contact with, or seeing this liquid has the following consequences: Viewers are intoxicated for a number of days, Contactee's become polymorphed for a number of weeks, and the consumer's race, gender, appearance, memory, class, and history are permanently altered. The holder considers this experience delightful, and will go out of their way to do so at every opportunity.

Make a warlock that found a PHB or even the DM's guide, and gains reality-altering, horrible powers from it (pact of the tome, obviously). It does make the warlock slowly go insane though, as he realizes the nature of his universe.
The warlock would probably keep the book for themselves both to protect others and because free eldritch knowledge is dope.
To not break immersion you'd probably just have to refer to it as a mysterious, eldrich tome, which lays clear universal rules that no mortal should know, or something.

Well... that's not quite the whole shebang. One stays with you in the hopes of leading you to discovering new depravities, driving everyone else away from you, and conspiring against you to steal your body.
The other leaves you to spread more good once it decides you have learnt to espouse virtue on your own (and that halo probably means it's right), and reduces the sum of evil in the world by killing people who don't want to be good. I figure the DM can make the call regarding whether certain lawful and neutral evil characters get smougt, or if they are capable of being redeemed.

They never really had an effect on the campaign because he called it off after our party derailed the campaign by creating a cult and converting all the goblins to it (bringing something like 40+ goblins and a couple of hobgoblins to our side) instead of killing them and fighting our way through the cave.

Hey you guys remember "The Book of KND" from the Kids Next Door movie?
On one hand, it was cool that the book had all these instructions preserved in case evil triumphed, but that was only HALF of what made the book cool!
What really made that book cool was that it had all these blank pages in the back of the book for kids to write in their own "super-cool story." And that's how I'd go about implementing the books of Exalted Deeds and Vile Darkness.
It'd probably be, like, right at the very end of a huge campaign, and after the PCs emerge victorious, one of the two books teleports in front of the party and invites each character to immortalize their triumphs among infinite others, collected from far across the multiverses!

Alright so, seeing a few comments regarding: "We need books of Law and Chaos!"
Book of Law I can agree with. Seems to make more sense than books of Good and Evil actually.
Book of Chaos not so much. Chaos wouldn't stand to be bound in something unchanging like written text. So you make it music instead. Think along the lines of how history was passed down by some Vikings and Celts, in the form of songs taught to each new generation changing a bit with each iteration. Maybe flavor it to seek out bards or skalds in particular? Maybe it is the only one of the four "Records of Alignment" that actively seeks out new holders as it has no physical form? After a while it gets bored with whoever currently is humming it to themselves and moves on.
tl;dr "Book of Chaos" works pretty well as a magical song that earworms bards/barbarians for a while before wandering off on its own.

The Book of Vile Darkness also has one last weakness that’s nearly impossible to exploit. The DMG states that if all evil in the multiverse is destroyed, the book disintegrates into dust, but destroying all evil may or may not require killing every last being in existence because we all have a spark of evil in us, one way or another.
Edit: I’m pretty sure the book comes back if evil comes back, though.

This is part of a home brew campaign me and some friends did a few weeks back, thought I’d mention it after seeing the books mentioned here.
Though a bullshit sequence of combat, the party I was with managed to rangel the book of vile darkness out of the hands of the of the warforged pirate crew who were sent to get it for the BBEG, as it fell through the depths of the ocean floor, we concluding the session.
Come back a week later. We arrive at our destination, an island village where we were told we could get our ship repaired. Only to find it burned and in ashes, unholy abominations roam the streets and corpses crucified on lamp posts like the streets. We arrive at what used to be the town hall.. only to find the book in the possession of what I can only describe as a parasitical barnacle lich. After landing on the sea floor, it managed to corrupt a barnacle, which was not only possessed by it, but gained the boons. Allowing it to grow and take control of a sunken corpse and amass an army of undead as it made its way to the island.
Just to note this may have been a cheap way for the dm to introduce a one off villain while keeping the book as part of the story, but the entire party fell in love with the idea so it didn’t matter.
TLDR : book of vile darkness turns a barnacle into an undead lich and raises an army of undead sailors.

I had one character with holding both book, which caused him to become a odd being as he was a middle spot of pure good and pure evil, many devils and angels watched over my character, which he remain the holders of both of them but the DM cursed him to forever be the holder of them and I was force to role a d4, evens I was a hero and odds I was a villain, which resulted in some fun moments and some oddly scary moments. But at the end of the story, my character wrote the book of perfected balance, taking in both book's spiritual energies and fusing them into a book that brought could end any conflict if read alone. So my character, a Tiefling Rogue became a end to all wars until he was forcefully bound by spirit to his own book and died. Thanks, DM.

2:50 so basically people can always fall to evil, but evil people are beyond redemption.
    Wonderful.

The only true way to permanently destroy the book of vile darkness is to completely eliminate evil from the universe.

In my Dnd world, there’s a books written by the man who invented magic which contains an incredibly in-depth guide to every location in the multiverse, and every spell ever. It grants the owner all of this near unlimited knowledge and power, yet you must share a body with the spirit of it’s original author and your body becomes a variation of the former host’s

Sounds like a good time to get a clone and have them read the two books and change their alignments.

I love the implication that the only way to truly destroy the book of all evil is for an evil creature to sacrifice itself for it's destruction, thus maybe being redeemed in the process? Not that, yknow, that's ever gonna _happen_ in any dnd campaign.

My character was introduced into the game I'm in now, by being a lost Orc, who accidentally found himself in a library in the Fae Wild.
Everyone in the party, myself included, got to do an Investigate check, to see if we found any books that might be worthwhile. I found a book that, with minutes of study, can give proficiency with a single weapon, for as long as I keep the book. (One weapon at a time.)
I was going to play Path of the Sun Soul. But, my DM, having forgotten that it was in Xanathar's, literally handed me Kensei.

You don't need a book to destroy your enemies just a tooth pick and dedication.

Just pulled the moon card today and was granted 3 wishes....one of them was spent being granted the wisdom and saintly ideals from the book of exalted deeds. Honestly fucking worth the effort to word it well

2:49 That's about as fair as the "balance" of Rava and Vatu in Legend of Korra. Man's just wanted to be a good guy.

Then they made them into supplements. "The Book of Brokenly Good Feats and Such" and the Book of "No You Can't Play That Shit in My Campaign."
