- Опубликовано: 27 июл 2024
- Today I'm reviewing Sunset Riders, an arcade-style run & gun set in the old West. Though I focus on the Sega Genesis version, I also do a comparison with the SNES version.
The Genesis footage was recorded on a Retron 5.
SNES footage was borrowed from World of Longplays • SNES Longplay [067] Su...

This looks like a great game. I'd like to add it to my Sega Genesis collection. I'll keep an eye out for it.
I remember finishing this game on Genesis when I was like 9 years old and it left a deep mark in my memory mainly due to soundtrack, which is pretty badass, imo. There's something about Genesis synths that just has that extra punch that can't be replicated.
Wow, the SNES looks so much better! What was I thinking being a Genesis kid back in the day?!
Cool review Pam!
+Start To Continue I was actually surprised to see how much more detail was in the SNES version. Though I think the colours look better on Genesis.
Cannot be Tamed late to the party, but I’m going to assume this was made early on when Konami signed on as a 3rd party, because they started really really pushing the Genesis afterward. This game plays great and I love it, but after this Konami’s sega output got ridiculously better in detail and care in terms of presentation. Capcom really didn’t do right by sega, but eventually Konami did Bloodlines, Rocket Knight, Sparkster, Contra Hard Corps…just sayin! 5 freaking years later lol
Nothing like pink bullets and censorship
@@josh_gd Pink bullets are pretty, though!!!!
I'm glad that Pam talks about retro video games.
John Wayne's Contra :p
played this game in a arcade at pizza hut when i was a kid and looking to add it to my genesis collection. great review!
"Asta la bye-bye!"
- Paco Loco
One of my favorite arcade games... I spent a lot of quarters on it.
Cool little retrospective 👌 Gonna wait for the arcade edition hack to be released before I revisit this one tho
Love that you're covering some sega once again!
One day I might finally find an affordable copy of sunset riders so I finally can play it!
+Stefan Johansson Good luck, I hope you find one!
@@Cannotbetamed1 I absolutely love your reviews! I am curious as to why you picked the Genesis version as opposed to the SNES version; however. I've always found it to be superior, if nothing else for the fact that all players, are well; playable.
Good review. I played the Sega ver a few years back and after a buncha tries, got through it. The last boss I was able to beat by staying on the left of the screen and jumping up and down while firing shots. For his 2nd forme, he nailed himself with his own Dynamite and his 3rd forme I toughed through somehow. I like your style. The intro and card and music have kind of a late mid 90s vibe and you review games pretty clean and fair. Glad I found your channel.
Thanks, welcome to the channel!
Just discovered this channel and its top notch. Love the retro videos.
Thanks!
Your videos are a nice inspiration because me and my friends are gonna play retro games and your videos let us know which are good and which not to play. great video as always
+PixelTrinity Thanks! I hope you enjoy the ones I've reviewed!
Interesting fact :Most real Cowboys did not always wear Cowboy hats but would wear Derby hats.Ay! If you ask me (I am Irish),Derby hats make you look more tougher too.
Ahhhhh Yes they did. You’re probably speaking in regards to Anglo-American fake cowboys lol ... Latino Cowboys “The Real” vaqueros by the way, have always worn Sombreros since it’s days of colonization in the Americas. The Derby hats “Bolins” were worn in central and South America waaay before the Brits claimed it was there little invention. Basically, most hats came to fruition in the Americas in the 15th century waaay before the English even arrived in the Americas. The Espanoles were here first and created sombreros, Bolins, chapins, etc to keep the sun and wind from their faces ... but cute story about the Irish and English claiming Bolins as their own lol Very cute Ha! ... sorry, I just hate shit on wiki and Anglos claiming shit that didn’t come from them ;)
4:06 Quite impressed at how you can time the narration of saying: "deaths can seem cheap, like getting hit by a sign post" exactly just when that happened in the video. I wouldn't know how to do that when narrating or editing a video.. =P
I try to be precise :)
Hi, Pam. Nice review as always. I've played the SNES version of this game, but never the one on Sega Genesis.
This was the default co-op game we played growing up. Thanks for covering this nostalgic gem!
No problem!
I love the sega saturn and pc game reviews you do, they're both systems I haven't seen much of
Ordered mine cant wait to go back in time
I have Sunset Riders on the SNES and like it a lot. Some people say it's a western Contra, but it feels a lot different than Contra in my opinion. I want the Genesis version just to experience the differences between the two, but my all-time favorite version will always be the arcade. Too bad it's getting pricey as hell. Console Wars has a great comparison video for this game.
And gotta love Nintendo and their stance on moral hygiene. I've been making fun of them for that since I was a kid!
+Westapo I've only played the first Contra on NES, but I agree that it feels quite different than this.
Cannot be Tamed & Nefarious Wes "Erin from #ErinPlays beat the game itself so please go check her channel out as well too." 😐🏇💃🏋️🤸💪✌️👌👍🙏💖🎮🕹️📱💻🎥🎞️📽️🎬📺📕📖📈🔮
I used to play this game quite a bit in the arcade..as it was one of my favs! Never knew genesis did a version of this game!?..Great review! the SNES version my have better background graphics but the genesis colors look way better
I really love this game, very colorful and expressive. excellent review
Thank you
actually a game i owned growing up. i remember playing it a lot but could never complete it for some reason. great review
My brother used to have the SNES version. It's such a classic, but MAN is it hard!
+Randomark3087 It is. I found the levels on horseback especially hard.
I played this game all the time back in the Genesis era, and much preferred it to the SNES version.
4:19 billy can easily kill this boss when his gun is leveled up. he just has to stand behind the logs, the boss bullets don't reach that part but billy can shoot him up
I Actually prefer Atari 2600 "Outlaw" for my western gunslinging video gameplay, but "Sunset Riders" looks fun.
+emrazor2 I don't know if I've ever played an Atari game. Oh, E.T.! But I think that's it.
I was just playing this the other night, though it was the SNES version. Great review.
+Retro Cynical Thank you!
I thought you hung up the old sneakers. Good to see you back!
Nah! It's only been 2 weeks.
+Cannot be Tamed the gall of that gal 8^D
"Thank you nice Pam" for this review.
My pleasure!
@Cannot be Tamed As you know, Sunset Riders on the Genesis has a unique background in Stage 3-2.
Konami games on Genesis were definitely more hardcore. Especially Contra, Castlevania, and Sunset Riders. Contra , Castlevania and Sunset Riders are very easy games on SNES.
+gamebuyer22 I actually found Sunset Riders harder on SNES, at least the levels on horseback.
Let's see:
Super Castlevania 4 is easy, yes, but Bloodlines is considered easy as well.
Contra 3 is tough, same as Hard Corps on Genesis
Castlevania Dracula X is not easy, see the last battle to see how ridiculous Konami could get.
Sunset Riders on SNES is not easy, but unlike the Genesis version, Konami went with colored bullets to make them easier to see, just like the arcade version.
I own all of these, I can vouch for them, plus their Genesis counterparts, plus Rocket Knight Adventure and Sparkster for Genesis , and SNES Sparkster. Now those are tough games, especially their hard modes.
love the opening music
I love sunset riders, sweet video as always
Thank you!
I actually like the Genesis version's difficulty curve. It makes it more interesting, in my opinion.
love this game I remember first time playing it! so cool good review
Thanks!
I really enjoy your videos.
+Ready Set Tech Thanks!
I really liked the SNES version, had a lot of fun in co-op. Fsr the kind of flip your character do when you go through a platform was pretty badass for you me and the run animation of the cowboys when running on a horde of bulls was pretty funny.
I own copies of the SNES and Genesis versions. The Genesis version was a major disappointment as Konami opted for a 4 meg cart, when an 8 meg cart would have served a far greater purpose in getting the game closer to the arcade version. The SNES one, though censored, is the far better option here.
You had me at "retro video games"! Just kidding you had me at "hi". :P
holy shit im so good at this game when i was a kid
Good review never knew there was such differences between the Snes and Sega. I still dont know which one to pick for my collection. Perhaps Arcade version but having trouble trying to find that one.
very informative video, honest unbiased opinion. picking this one up for sure.
feel like there's not enough run n gun on the Sega genesis. I don't believe there's any for the CD or 32x.
+ATeamSkater67 There are a few good ones on the Genesis - Gunstar Heroes, Contra Hard Corps, Mega Turrican. Can't think of much for the Sega CD though.
Such a nice game.
And difficult as hell too XD
Great game and video. Konami were really on fire during the 16 bit era, if only they would put out some new titles in the same style.
+Village Monk's Gaming Memories Thanks! Konami made such great games. I've been noticing I've been choosing a lot of them to review, and not even on purpose.
Rip Konami.... Found you when my wife wanted to show me Rule of Rose which she owned years ago.
Awesome! For some reason I never knew there was a Genesis version of this game. Thank you for attacking my wallet yet again. haha
Awesome game Awesome video!!! Beating this with a buddy right now SNES version...
Nice
Genesis
Loved that game.
Great game, great review. The SNES version is where it's at, well besides the original arcade version of course.
+The Game Grinder Pink bullets, though. :P
+The Game Grinder I've never played the arcade version, I don't think I've ever even seen an arcade cabinet for it.
I lucked out and the arcades I had access to when I was younger seemed to have most of the "classics". I haven't seen a Sunset Riders machine in ages.
I discovered the arcade version when the lines were too long for the just-released Mortal Kombat II. I fell in love with it. Great graphics, gameplay, music, voice clips. Even though I've been playing games since Lunar Lander, SR ended up being just about my favorite arcade game. I'd love to own a cabinet.
Rasdock
Hah, awesome!
I'm not a big fan of western games but this was an awesome game
Heh, talk about timing, I just ordered this game about a week ago. (A repro cart, the original is too rich for my blood!) Good review, thanks Pam!
+chuckobscure Thank you!
I played the shit out of this when it was in the arcade. Billy was always my character. I would love to see your take on the original Red Dead Revolver.
Love this game so much. Great fun, Great Music, Great Gameplay. New Sub too ;)
+Kapow! Events, Music and Gaming Thank you!
Oh i love this one
Where do you find your retro games? I've been high and low and I'm adding to my collection little by little but I'm curious how do you come up with your find?
+blindjustice316 Local stores, flea markets, shows/swaps, conventions, online. All over the place.
Little bit late but I absolutely cannot recommend the game for its harsh difficulty. Plus points I can give it is better controls and of course not being censored.
Both snes and genesis also force you to play hard to see the best ending. Hard on genesis indeed becomes a bullet hell. Bullets travel so fast you barely have enough time to dodge.
Snes is tough but it has fair challenge.
Cool game. Reminds me to C64-times. That's why I love it.
The game looks really clear. Are you playing on the Genesis hardware? Do you have an AV upgrade?
+Dave U I'm playing on a Retron.
One game I do not own yet but want to. I think I want the SNES version though.
+Nintendo Hodge Yeah, I think the SNES version is the better one to buy.
PROTIP: For the signs that can hit you on the top of the train, there's always a smaller warning sign before them.
+CAPMAX Gaming Ah, I never even saw those.
What Up Pam Always wanted to know what this game looked like after seeing in my friends retro game store #GameOn
Whats this? Someone else has embraced our overlord Scanlines?
+krikit ah they were there but for a brief moment.
*tears up*
+krikit They come and go in this video.
is it just me or is it hard to find good retro reviews. some are okay but the audio is horrible or they dont speak clear or they try to be super funny. cgr is more my thing but i liked that one. consider yourself having the 3999th sub
Tahnks for subbing! I enjoy CGR as well, my format is definitely influenced by it.
I barely ever played the Genesis version though I played the SNES version hundreds of times with my cousins or various friends. I' m curious about why when you were describing the differences between the two versions you didn't mention that the SNES Sunset Riders had all four selectable characters allowing both players to select revolver characters or shotgun characters if they desired.
+Rogue Rifter Because it's a 6 minute video? I had mentioned that the original arcade version (which the SNES version is more similar to) had 4 characters to choose from.
+Cannot be Tamed True. I guess that was always the most significant difference to me because I still remember trying to settle my then 6 year old twin cousins' argument over who got to play as Cornando first when I was babysitting them the night they got the Genesis version of Sunset Riders. Took four ideas before I came up with a way of settling it that they didn't manage to cheat or tie at..
*''Draw, pilgrim!''*
I can't! I'm afraid of those belted hats...
Yet another game I missed back in it's heyday. Watching this video actually was slightly depressing to see how far Konami had fallen from the days when it was considered one of the best publishers in the world. What a sorry state they are enjoying now. You're dead on about Nintendo sanitizing games, which is partially why I tried Genesis versions of games first. I felt like a rebel at the time because I was playing the original version of games. Yeah, younger me was a loser.
One of the best games :)
How to buy a saga just to play that game that game looks badass
Almost reminds me of Dashin’ Desperadoes
Berree mee wit meye muney! Best game!
I prefer the non sanitized version where you can visit the ladies !!!
I'm confused as to why the ladies give you a kiss and then pay YOU.
I love this game me and my bro would rent it over and over again lol probably would be cheaper if we just bought it
Cannot be Tamed "Hey #Pam, since you did a #SunsetRiders review on #Genesis & Super NES, can you do a #WildGuns review on the #SNES as well as talking about the #WildGunsReloaded on the #PS4 as well too please?" 😘🙏💖💋🎮🕹📱💻🎥📺📈🔮
+Charles Anthony Middlebrooks maybe
Cannot be Tamed "Looking forward to it by seeing it & Thank-You." 😊💖🎮🕹📱💻🎥🎞📽🎬📕📖📈🔮
I could have thought that there was an alternate genesis version. Nevermind.
I had Sunset Riders on SNES & I sold it for almost nothing... 😥😥
Best game ever!
😍😍😍
geez, Nintendo censoring things..... never heard of that before....
Further, nice review , also comparing the SNES version. Try to include a bit more humor i would say, would make it a bit more interesting.
I played this with my step dad at our nearest nickel city and we beat it with only wasting only 200 nickel lol
haha, that's a lot of nickels.
The genesis version is culturally controversial wich makes it unique, not better than the Snes version i agree but more mature, you missed to say it also depicts different ladies characters acting different and dressed different on the genesis version. I am a sega guy but i am more inclined towards the snes version too
The sega Genesis lose at the graphics, sounds, presentation and that's just a good option if u don't have the snes version
Genesis version rocks but nes not that colorful
One question you ever play metal slug
Nope
No😱 I highly recommend you give it a shot no pun intended 😂 if your a fan of a challenging run and gun shooter with an amazing soundtrack and pretty good art work You will enjoy it
Bury me with my money
hi pam. are you Canadian?
I certainly am!
never caught that on a previous video but i guess its the subtle pronunciations. like the videos/channel
haha ho ho yes yes cowboys sun riders
And again Techno ......
Nice review. Both games are fun but the SNES version is def better.
saw your vid 2 weeks ago :-D
+Console Wars I'll have to check our your comparison.
The Nintendo version is better
Are you going to do a live stream of this game
+Nick Thompson, a game with half the levels, half the bosses, and half the playable characters? No thanks, and I can say this as I own both versions. Konami goofed on this Genesis release.
My first experience with Sunset Riders was with the arcade game, and then the SNES. The Genesis version feels like a sad joke.
I really like sunset riders, typically I find snes ports to be more enjoyable than sega. Another good video Pam.
+ben decker Thank you!
+Cannot be Tamed zombies ate my neighbors next?
ben decker I was thinking of reviewing that a while back. I even recorded a bit of footage. The BF traded it away though.
found the game at an arcade only 4 hours with the car away XD
I WILL DRIVE THERE IN MAy its a 4 player coop arcade cabinett
sunset riders is awesome
both genesis and snes are great but the snes port is a little bit better
here is the retro arcade the biggest one in middle europe with 150 arcade games
m.facebook.com/arcadehry/
+bonggzilla Nice, I've never seen a cabinet for this game.
The SNES version is way better in graphics, sound and gameplay.
2:12 😬
SNES version is better. It's got sound clips.
easy win for the snes
The Genesis version sucked compared to the SNES, but at least they had the indian enemies
What a hot Girl!
