When I started playing Magic, it was with an EDH playgroup that focused mostly on combo wins. Ruric Thar was my first commander and was the only way for me to compete with them. Fun times.
cEDH is complete garbage. Fill your deck with combos and as many tutors and that's literally every deck. Very rarely do you have actually unique competitive lists. It had gotten to the point where if I knew the game was cEDH judging by your commander I know at least 60 cards of your deck. It's pathetic.
@@jesseoverbey6628 you should look into the adaptive and reactive decks of the format like Blood Pod and Bad Farm they're very interesting in how they play. Many magic the gathering players have many play styles that suit them.
Jesse Overbey cedh isn’t trash it’s honestly pretty interesting. These guys’ channel is actually really good and a lot of their episodes are focused on showing cedh but making it interesting.
Jesse Overbey Um...have you ever heard of “optimized metas” before? CEDH players are very upfront about what they are doing and aren’t going to be using their lists in casual play. The philosophy is very counter to that. Of course many of the decks are going to use similar cards - they’re the best in slot! They would not be competitive if they included “unique” cards. I love cEDH because it takes a lot of the whining and politics out of EDH group play - everyone agrees to play the best stuff and games are often far more fun and interactive than regular EDH.
Oh really? I am going to build my first edh deck, and I was thinking about Thar. If it wouldn't be problem, I will be veeery grateful, if you could send list to me 😅
I used to have a Ruric Thar deck, built specifically to turn off a certain player's decks, which were all decks worthy of That player who... Plays solitaire. many cEDH decks share the same or similar win cons and enablers. High power games focus less on uniqueness and more on skilled play and decision making. Though I do agree that any two card win the game outright combo is super boring and a little annoying.
@@Closer2Zero To supplement what The Noeledge has indicated, it is very much the case that you should expect cEDH games to end in one of a relatively small number of ways each time. I have an All Creatures Nikya build as well, and definitely Ruric Thar is one of the major King Pins of that deck. Every time he comes out he does work, and even if quickly removed is usually at least doing 6-12 damage before he goes while eating a killspell from their hands.
Yah, I have a copy of Ruric in my binder and thought it would be a great counter to the spell heavy decks my friends play. I have a few copies of Nikya because I was playing Standard a lot when he came out. Seemed like a natural match of those two and a deck full of ETB creatures!

I did a deck once. It had a lot of cheap ramp and a lot of mana dorks. (57 creatures, 33 lands and 10 non creature spells) My main idea was to play RT as soon as T3/T4 and just watch the world burn. Now to help keep safe this big boy, I played Dragon Throne of Tarkir to prevent him attacking and also as a way to boost all my Gruul boys. (Just imagine being attacked by a 6/7 Birds of Paradise) Also as an alternate way to play, I put Sunbird's Invocation when commander tax was too high in order to have a 2x1 way to boost my creature numbers. Since I’m new without any decks (and in Covid-19 times) I’d like to see more crushing quarters episodes to get help with building and getting a new deck to play. Thanks in advance.
It's quickly becoming a pet card of mine but I could really enjoy putting a copy of Strionic Resonator in a Ruric Thar deck. Just being able to threaten 12 damage from someone casting a spell for 2 extra mana is just a golden opportunity in my eyes and even more if able to fit in Seedborn Muse in there to constantly threaten it on each player's turn.
I play a similar build, but I run Sekki, Season's Guide and Warstorm Surge/Pandemonium as a finisher since it's kind of unique to Gruul and a lot of people are more familiar with Kiki/Splinter Twin.
Im not competitive when I play commander but I was surprised not to hear about infect being given to him which also reads "if you cast 2 non creature spells or I have possibility storm out, you die". As a less competitive player I would also include equipment that gives lifelink which in my meta would likely make a big difference in the power of the table...
