      obviously you need to know what your on about and not just a randomer off the street but I just mean the little RB specific tricks to save you lots of trial and error, you could tell someone exactly how to build a engine to the best spec possible but if they don't know how to swing a spanner they're not going to be able to are they @@danielbrealey2924

      We tend to tell people what, rather than how. If we tried to show people how to build and engine we open ourselves to liability issues and give away too many secrets. Telling people what works means they are armed with information to help them when they go to build and talk to the engine builder and tuner.

    You can take a hammer and tap the counter weights on your crank and if it doesn’t sing then there is a crack every time usually in the fillet.

  • @bradpittman5075
    @bradpittman5075 5 лет назад

    Fault line, any sharp edges 90s etc. get rid of it. Radius fillets. But no stress risers. Crazy how knocking the edges off of things makes them stronger. Take away the places where cracks start is what you are doing. Nitrite is harder than wood pecker lips, Franks flex. Just a thought. Love this channel.

    Nice job Herman and Andrew .
    Will add the factory cranks are induction hardened forged items, i never have worked out how deep the hardening goes or if right through. Nitto collars are harder than the factory crank material so a good investment to avoid wear there even on long nose cranks. Good idea to stake those grub screws in with a pointed punch to avoid then unwinding as loctite does not like heat to hold them in. Fault line on crank end = Stress riser becoming a fracture point. Some also now tear drop the oil holes on the mains to positively feed the big ends when big pumps that can keep up are used, usually by also drilling out the oil feeds to 8mm in the block.
    As usual, very informative.

    • @fishingsgreat
      @fishingsgreat 5 лет назад

      Ahh actually rb cranks are forged but are definitely NOT induction hardened

    • @smoknhothonda
      @smoknhothonda 5 лет назад

      Induction hardening is a 'surface' treatment essentially, to produce a shallow hard wear resistance surface and have a softer ductile core to maintain strength. So to answer your query, no induction hardening isn't designed to increase the hardness all the way though a component.

    Why RB's have crank issues?
    Because all inline 6 cylinders suffer it, it is inherent to all inline 6 cylinders and it is a harmonic issue you can only manage, but never cure.
    Billet crankshaft in my 2.8L finally gave up the ghost at around 10-12,000kms of hard circuit driving, the nose snapped and oil pump was not in good shape (N1 pump).
    But remember, I was circuit racing, not just a few inline runs here and there, but punishing it lap after lap with foot flat to the floor for sometimes 20 minutes at a time.
    A billet crank from my experience will not cure harmonic issues in the RB, it only pushes the life out a bit more, but eventually the harmonic issues will catch up with it sadly.
    If running a drag car setup, it usually isn't too much of a problem as time in these harmonic ranges is limited, so that is a good thing for the drag racing crowd.
