I really hate what they did to karate...it is the ultimate pervertion of fighting. A shamefull degeneration to blitz-touchings without a real effect.
And the childish "kiai" screaming performances make it even more ridiculous...Make karate real again! Oss!
This is what happened to taekwondo. At least the karate has retained some combat elements. I'm a little confused though, is this 2021 olympic footage? There's been zero coverage on the TV and all the other videos seem to be about the qualifying competitions in the run up to the Olympics. It's shocking that a sport as important as this hasn't had better coverage.
Why do they scream?
To show the judges that they hit first. I don't mind the scream but you shouldn't turn away while another person is throwing a strike at you even if it's light to no contact.
That's called a kiai and it's one of the most important parts of karate. It's used when you throw your strongest punch and to release the negative energy from your body and soul. Of course you don't have to scream like that, just yell however you feel.
Broo... just the real reason is You have to expel the air from the body, otherwise that air will prevent you from breathing. The best way to breath out is scream. And I can assure you that, screaming is very comforting the people.

Yeah, I try to appreciate all sorts of martial arts, but this is just... meh. You can't make this exciting even with all this music.

All of That is because they wanted karate in the Olympics..
The screaming is necessary. If you dont scream you get no points and furthermore the „ Kiai“ is a very important part of Karate.
