Today we made a trip on the water with Kotaro Fukuma or, as it sounds so beautiful in French, 'Un voyage sur l’eau’. 洸 stands for water and light. During the recital we had to miss the boat on the shimmering water in the background, but Kotaro lets us nevertheless look to a sunny future with lyrical pieces by many different composers that evoke emotions. (00:01) We started with the Barcaroll Op. 60 (1846) by Frédéric Chopin. Chopin played this barcaroll (boat song; barca = boat in Italian) himself at his last recital in Paris in 1848. Even Ravel characterised this composition with 'Chopin was not only satisfied with a revolution in piano technique. They are brilliant passages and enchanting harmonies.' Kotaro knows better than anyone how to interpret Chopin and seemingly effortlessly captivates the listener until the last note. (10:37) Then we felt taken along the river Rhine, with Les Chants du Rhin (1865) by Georges Bizet. The Chants du Rhin (Songs of the Rhine) is a suite of six dreamy miniatures, based on poems by Joseph Méry and composed in 1865. The songs are grouped symmetrically around the central “La bohémienne,” thereby disclosing that the overall theme concerns the beautiful and free-spirited gypsy girl. (30:07) In Spain we were taken to Almería from Iberia, the last masterpiece by Isaac Albéniz. Iberia (1908) is a suite written for piano. The entire suite lasts more than 1.5 hours and consists of 4 books. They are Twelve Musical Impressions (as the piece was originally called) with Spanish folk music and Almería is from book 2. If you have ever been to Almería (it is the driest part of Spain) you will understand that you always long for water in this beautiful gypsy environment. It is a scenery that has served several famous movies set in the Sahara desert, from where you also can see the sun reflecting in the Mediterranean sea. Kotaro made us enjoy this mystical landscape. (41:29) As a final we came to Vltava (or De Moldau), the masterpiece (late 1874) from Má Vlast (my homeland) by Bedřich Smetana. This piece is a transcription of Kotaro Fukuma from 2012 and it’s quite a challenge but it shows us how you can represent a complete orchestra with only 10 fingers. No wonder he had to take off his jacket for that! An inspiring and visual melody sound where we see the river emerge and flow through the forest. We hear the hunting horn in the landscape. Then the music turns into a polka and we imagine ourselves dancing at a peasant wedding. After that we move on with rapids to the capital Prague until we see the river into the distance merging with the German Elbe. You should close your eyes if you really don’t want to miss any of the impressions in your ears! (55:07) As an encore, we were able to enjoy the Barcarolle “June" from the Seasons by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. De lejos, el mejor pianista de tu generación! Kotaro, Bravissimo! Thank you again
