I have to say, being a Fabricator by trade, although I had spent roughly 45mins to an hour contemplating how I was about to tackle this, Not to mention coming to the conclusion my eyes were playing tricks on me, since peering down the end of the plastic tube maybe 2’ or so away, my eyes kept telling me it was a similar shape to a Torx bit, albeit a fairly big one, but after trying ALL of my Torx bits, as my brain began to leak out of my ear, I thought I’d see what the web had to say about it….. I am SO glad yours was the 2nd video I watched, since the 1st guy wanted me to destroy the winch and cable mechanism, which defeats the purpose of having the spare where it is!! Anyway, all I had was 5/8” ID DOM, and some sheets of 3/16 & 1/8” thick sheets of rubber, just as you did, and it didn’t seem to work until I lost my cool, and hit the end of the pipe hard enough, then it went on and lowered just as designed!! That being said, I just wanted to say Thank you for your great idea, to the point, no life story history lesson, just business about what to do, and why the spare is important!! Great catch before a roadtrip!! Thanks again!!
Great video. I happened to have all these supplies in my garage and this just saved me hours of frustration. Worked like a charm on my 2001 F350. Thanks again.
Thanks for this great video! I watched several of the videos about different ways to take the spare tire off if you don’t have the key. THIS was the best/easiest/simplest way. I bought a 3’ piece of 1/2” conduit for $1.10 and bent the end slightly with a hammer and stuck it in and tapped on it to test fit...and when I pulled it out, the key plug came out! Then I used my 3/8” extension (which now fits in the hoist) to lower the spare tire! I was dreading having to take it to the dealer or cutting the cable myself and then having to purchase another hoist for $75 or more.
Wow. Ok, kudos for improvising. But I wouldn’t call this an official hack. I don’t have the metal tube or inner tube. Buuuuut, i guess the idea itself can also be improvised/personalized.

17mm 6 point socket worked for me
Just noticed the one on my f150 has an actual key similar to an ignition switch to release the spare and my truck key doesnt fit.
Me too
Wow good job thanks great idea 👍🏼
that as like a magic tick
These things are hoaky and they will slip at some point leaving you in a pickle, just get rid of it while you can!
