I’m new to radio. I’ve watched a few dozen of these videos. This guy is GOLD 👍 He shares his knowledge freely, without judgement and is a great example of the teachers we have here on RUclips. His enthusiasm is inspiring. Outstanding 👍👍👍👍👍
“Man walks around tree line shouting queens english “ new video title haha. I’ve been wanting to string up an antenna in some large pines out front my university housing community. Think ima go delta loop since I’m surely gonna look like a mad man no matter what , might as well go fancy.
For me, I like the background noises. I've forgotten all my knot tying from Boy Scouts 50 years ago so I would enjoy a knot video. Nicely done on the delta loop. Simple and works great.
I was finally able to run my 160m Multiband Delta Loop for the very first time on Christmas Eve. Over 540ft. Wire with a 4:1 Balun around 30ft. high up from the Ground. This Antenna punches thru like a Slegdehammer. Amazing Reports on the 10W Band Portion on 160m. Booming on 80 and 40m Band as well . Using ultralight Weight silver Antenna Wire. It turned my Stomach upside down to work Central Russia, Moscow City and Asiatic Russia so smoothly with no Sweat. Ground Noise Level at S1 and just very light Static crashing Noise. I am blown away what a Piece of best Quality Antenna Wire can do.Big Bang for the Bucks 💯👍
I just recently got my 20 meter delta loop up and I'm surprised how well it works. The feed is up at 12 feet and the two opposite corners are at 22 feet. Still lower than I would like but even where it is works well. Glad to see I'm not the only one throwing lines into trees. Keep up the great work Callum.
Nothing like the horizontal Delta loop. I have an 80 m loop up 75 feet usually just as good as my TA-33Jr. yagi! Using pullies at each apex. Using RG400 and 2.5 to 1 balun at the feed point. It's MAGICAL :) Want to try a "Mega" 160 m version someday. Cal you are a legend OM. Carry on and all the best in 2025! ~Keith W1KRI
I love my horizontal 80m loop. It's in an odd shaped triangle, one leg is 60ft up in a tree, second leg about 35ft in a tree, third leg 30ft at my house. The legs are close to even in length. Fed It with about 35ft of rg6 75ohm coax. It's made from 12 guage stranded jacketed copper wire and no balun. It was my first home made antenna and is a pileup buster. Merry Christmas and happy new year!
Cal, there’s a tool for this. Ha! Just kidding around. Thanks for showing the viewers just how much work goes into hanging antennas. I spent all afternoon messing with an inverted L yesterday.
Dear Commander Callum, the idea sounds simple - the actual “making it happen” is more complex. “If you put anything down here, it disappears” - the saga of my wire antenna building, also. Thought I was the only one! Glad you did not have to trim it! Best wishes for the new year, KQ4IXD
I use bright orange paracord for pulling the permanent black UV resistant cord into the tree, and orange carabiners until I get things right, then replace them with black ones. I also used PVC pipe and a sprinkler valve to make an air launcher which will shoot an arborist's throw weight over 100 feet in the air if needed max air pressure 100 PSI.
Lots of useful trees 👍🏻 Kept wincing thinking you were going to get a piece of scaffy straight back in the mush 😮 Good end results Callum 😀👍🏻 Roll-on 2025 🎉
WOW that's amazing to see what you did and your in tune as well on all, I thought you would have to go a bit higher. So I could do that myself because I have tree's that would work, but it's not my land but who's to know. The ballon would go on the flat roof.anyway that's another story. Have a great new year and see you soon Alan.💯🇬🇧👍
I'm a big fan of the sky loop (full wavelength horizontal loop) and have used one both in VK and DL for the last 14 years or so. I have tried several other wire antennas but none match the low noise and some gain characteristics of what is to all intents and purpose the same antenna as your delta loop only an oblong or square rather than a triangle. Most gain is on bands higher than the base frequency in the direction away from the feedpoint. So a 40m loop performs well on 20 & 10m. By the way i have tried different baluns and even ladder line feed, in the end I always come back to using a Q-section to match the 150-170 ohm antenna to the 50 ohm coax. 73 Ed DD5LP
You've made a NVIS antenna, fantastice antenna for into G no good for DX on 40M, saying that, the higher bands with a proper matching circuit NOT a unbalanced ATU will work fine for DX. Keep up the good work..
I wish there were easier ways to get wires in trees. It must've taken me two months to finally get a decent location for my random end-fed. I tried making my own weight with throwline, I tried using a catapult/slingshot to fire a line up there and had all kinds of 'fun' and games', not to mention a couple of times hearing a loud 'crack' or 'thwack' indicating that I'd overshot and hit a neighbour's shed. 🙄 Worth it in the end though. Does well on 40 down to 10 with a 9:1 unun and even some success on 80 which it's not supposed to be good for. Anyway, nice job!
Would you consider this more of a NVIS antenna at that height? Can you give an estimate on what your range was? I have really wanted to do this setup while portable for sometime now and just haven't done it. Thanks! Robert KD4YDC
You’ll be a cowboy yet Cal the way you were swinging that piece of cord and the end weight…… mite get a job here down in OZ on a remote cattle ranch ! 🤣. Great video also. Would love to try that on 11M . How directional are they ? Cheers mate. Happy and safe prosperous new year to you and the family. All the best. 👍🥃🇦🇺
I've found band conditions have an affect on results however the loop is a great performer....takeoff angle being what it is...The loop is the fly-swat of the HF signal....
Loops always work well, especially on rx. Trying to get a base report when everyone's using different ants at different heights is always a chore eh. Great ant though. Your lucky, 40m dead during the day here hi.

Enjoyed another Edition of Antennas with Callum . Thank You !
Yeah great fun

Yeah.. I WAS thinking that it might have been too short.. But "just right"!
where I worked for 20 years I put up an antenna like this 6 feet over the metal roof of the building I was in. worked great
interesting antenna,
Happy New Year to you

Awesome video! I just setup my new rotatable delta loop yesterday and i am loving this antenna.
Great to hear!
Great work with the video and the loop Cal.
Many thanks!

great work Cal!
Impressive and pretty easy project Callum - The balun was probably the hardest part. - Happy New Year - Cheeers! - VE3GHP

Yeah.. That would have made better content..!
I loved my 20m delta loop. I used to call it the magic floatimg triangle. Hreat performance with my Ft-950. M0DID.
Dang, missed this! Have a great festering season 🎄🎅

And why does it work? Here is a demo: ruclips.net/video/FflcxdsResQ/видео.html
thanks Cal really enjoyed it 73s

Erm.. Yeah I think I said that too :)
Good evening Cal
Love the content. Might I recommend a fishing slingshot for throwing your line over tree limbs?
Well.. not for 3m. The problem is being a dick and trying to fling the coax up.
great vid as always when the silly quiz coming its the high light of my Christmas yes i know that sounds sad but i live a sad live
regards
dave
Yeah.. Meh. Not sure.
Hi Callum. You will have to run one round your antenna field you might get 80m in a rectangle. My no1 antenna is the 160m loop . Cheers David VK3DJC
Unfortunately not.. All the way around is 120m Grrr
@@DXCommanderHQ Extend the field to fit 160m few extra posts in the paddock.
Very nice
Thanks

Nice!
How about a window cleaning pole with a hook or something similar to put them over the branches as these are adjustable and various lengths might help
Well, meh. Not a big deal is it to throw a stone over a branch.
@DXCommanderHQ great video keep them coming been studying for the foundation exam so the more I lear the better in this hobby 👍
Nice loop Cal.. looking forward to working ya on da bands.. Happy New Year 2025 🎙Ira
Happy new year!!
Calum, it’s time chap. It’s time for an Anan or a Hermes lite. It will also serve your live streams well running thetis.
Never.
How well would the 40 meter delta work on rx of 41 meter band?
Beautiful.
Would you consider this more of a NVIS antenna at that height? Can you give an estimate on what your range was? I have really wanted to do this setup while portable for sometime now and just haven't done it. Thanks! Robert KD4YDC
Daytijme 40m is always going to be 200-300 miles. There's nothing beyond that anyway.
Great what a bit of wire up in some trees can do
Belated happy crimbo. Do you track any of the passing aircraft at all? Would love to get a station at your site as you get a lot of traffic.
Yeah.. we're right next to Honiley VOR. Email me next week to explain what you want nearby..
What did the dips look like on the analyzer ?
Wide
Love the silly throwing sound.. Watched it like 3 times laughing. lol
I would love to see what would happen if it was raised up vertical, with the balun at the bottom. Maybe would need a launcher for that ?
A completely different beast. It'll behave like a pair of verticals phased together.

There are lobes but at that height on 40m, it's straight up.
Its the noise floor....s
thats the best thing on a loop... Tests with ft8 and wisper will show this I,m sure..

Your lucky, 40m dead during the day here hi.
Yeah, guess it would be. Hmm! Off to 20m then!
@DXCommanderHQ yes 40 and 20m fantastic to uk tonight, listening out for.
interesting. does it work at 30, 17, and 12 as well?
No. Only the harmonics.
Just like all constants are variable, all temporary things are permanent.
Brilliant!
"quite a heavy flinger". Oh matron.
Callum, please next time use a arborist throw bag. You can hurt yourself with that piece of metal when it hits your head.
Never. Wear a hard hat instead!
@@DXCommanderHQ You clearly wore a hart head😄. I use a plastic bag filled with sand (cheap version of a arborist throw bag)

Hi Callum... Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Have you tried the loop on 6 mtrs? I'm always surprised how well they work on 50MHz. 73 Gord ve7uy.
Not yet! A bit low really.
