A friend of mine was dealing with an AIDS diagnosis at this time. One part of his holistic treatment plan was to meditate and focus on a particular number that he wanted to get his T-Cell level to.
"Designing Women" had done an episode about self-defense, and the women learned to yell "911!" in the case of an attack.
So my friend chose 911 as his target number. His partner wrote to Annie Potts, asking if she could send an autographed photo with a reference to "911."
Do you know what Annie Potts did?
She sent a cassette tape - BOTH SIDES - of a guided meditation focusing my friend's mind on the goal of 911.
    These were seriously classy women.

"Killing All the Right People" will always be one of my all time favorite episodes. Linda Bloodworth-Thomason wrote this after her mother died from contracting AIDS through a blood transfusion. She said, it brought her enlightened interest of how people with AIDS were treated with prejudice especially towards the gay community. She definitely used her platform to show ignorance at its finest and that is beyond commendable! And in my opinion, she should have won the Emmy for writing this.

His name was dragged all over town, the funeral home had to be browbeaten into accepting him, and the sense of shame that my southern family had is indescribable. The stories from then - dying men whose families have disowned them, left them for dead, and even refusing to claim their bodies - are unforgivable.

A.I.D.S is a terrible disease in and of itself; but two things make A.I.D.S even worse than it already is: ignorance and fear. It helps to educate yourself about H.I.V and how it can and cannot be transmitted. A.I.D.S cannot be transmitted through casual contact; it can only be spread through unprotected sexual intercourse as well as by both heroin addicts and Intravenous drug users sharing needles and through tainted blood transfusions. Granted, the last of these has been reduced considerably since the American Red Cross began screening every ounce of donated blood in 1985.

I was pleasantly shocked when they said, tell him he will get full disability and his hospitalization paid for the duration. He did have to leave the work place as folks were scared and we did not know much about contagion of it back then. He was surprised and gracious and passed a few months later. I was proud of my company.

The problem is that you are NOT supporting the LGBTQ+ community when you vote for Republicans. This was as true 30 years ago as it is today. These people who claim to support the gay community but then vote for politicians who actively cause harm to queer people are not "supportive." They’re just hypocrites.
I had a family member tell me he fully supported me and my rights. He voted for a politician who wanted to make it illegal for LGBTQ+ people to adopt children. I called him out on it, and he had the nerve to argue that this didn’t make him anti-LGBTQ. I had to inform him that yes, it actually does.

Hell we have an entire month dedicated to pride, almost every major corporation supports it. As long as we stop trying to demanding acceptance be taught in schools with drag shows and such.. we have nothing to fear. It’s like 90% theater anyway.

    • @DaveTexas

@@ldeast25 oh, sweetie, the Republicans just took away a woman’s right to reproductive healthcare. If you think they won’t come after gay marriage, you’re too unintelligent to be allowed a say in the conversation. And yes, a vote for any Republican - no matter why - is a vote against LGBTQ rights. It’s part of their national platform. You’re either 12 years old or have an IQ of 70 to believe otherwise.
You want the gays to go back in the closet. You want gays to be erased from education. No gay history mentioned, no gay sex education, no gays mentioned at all. That is demoralizing to gay children. That’s why gay teens have a much higher suicide rate. We were all told we weren’t worthy of equal treatment. We weren’t even mentioned, making us feel alone.
Are you also in favor a Jews being told that their history - including the Holocaust - shouldn’t be mentioned in schools? That this country’s history of slavery shouldn’t be taught? That what Republicans are pushing for all over the country.
But you’re just embarrassed to be gay. And too stupid to know that your rights will be gone as soon as Republicans get the chance. Clarence Thomas already said that’s what the Supreme Court will do. Why? Because Republicans - elected by you - packed the court with neo-Nazi anti-LGBTQ justices.

As a pwa ( Person With Aids ) and even before knowing that I carried the virus I found this episode rather enthralling because when Julia got " all fired up " the true truth came out and the facts began to fly freely and thereby let the hoity toidy kvetch know where her place was . Then of course telling that snooty heifer about going to the free clinic was in my mind just the icing with red roses on the cake :) .

@@aprilgosa5779 I agree. That could not have been an easy role to play, but it was necessary to get the point apart about why this disease was so bad. It wasn't just the disease itself, it was the stigma caused by the ignorance about the disease. I really admired Tony Goldwyn's character in this scene. He didn't respond to Imogene with anger, even though
he would have been justified in doing so.

I never saw the show but when I first watched this clip I was shocked and disgusted what she said about God sending HIV/AIDS as punishment to homosexuals. How dare that bitch said that. Nobody asks to get HIV/AIDS wether they're gay or straight, anybody can get it. I'm no Catholic but I do not need to be cause I know and believe that the Holy Mother loves her children the way they are, people created bigotry by abusing her book cause they didn't like what she wrote, all her children are pure no matter who they are. For those who are abusing the Bible with evil and committing bigotry against homosexuals, unmarried mothers and any others on your hatred list in front of God I'm going to put this in her book: "Those who judge shall be punished by Hell"

+Clint Guidry Earlier in the episode, Ima Jean was boasting to Julia how her son was doing so well at college. Julia decided to down play her own son's wonderful grades at school as something of a birthday present to Ima Jean by telling her he was failing chemistry. Julia explained at one point that telling that lie was a much better present for Ima Jean than buying her a scarf. The episode is posted here on RUclips so you can see the whole scene.

MrReasonablethinker, I am terribly sorry but I am going to have to ask you to move your car. The only thing that bothers us about the current President is that he was elected because of and with the help of Putin. You know that horrible man in Russia? And just for the record the MANY of you who loathed the previous administration mostly certainly did not accept it and absolutely positively did not make the best of it. You all acted the fool. So perhaps you should take your own advice and seek out a new country. Might we suggest Russia.

Mitch Gray maybe you’re right and maybe you’re wrong but it’s not about that anymore. All politics are about is trying to get everyone on their side. Tell me, how many people are in this country alone? U think everyone will all go one way 100%? Everyone is republican or everyone is democrat? NO! That will NEVER happen! And instead of trying to work together all you wanna do is waste time by pointing out the other sides flaws and negatives. It’s disgusting. I think you’d save a lot of time and energy if you just all got on a field and stand at opposite ends of the field, face each other, run at each other with pitchforks and just fight to the death. And I don’t mean till one side remains I mean one PERSON remains! Either that or get a hobby! ALL POLITICS ARE SHADY AND ALL HAVE SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET!
