That rat lawyer was the funniest guy in the village. His defense reads like a Monty Python script- I bet the villagers were giggling about that for weeks!
honestly love the shorter, light hearted, less information heavy videos. as much as i love the super dense and rigorously researched content, stuff like this can be a really lovely break imo!!
A little disappointed to learn that it was a lawyer for rats and not a rat who was a lawyer, but I guess I still enjoyed the video (/s, video was great!)
Dude pigs are BRUTAL. My mom had a huge potbelly pig when I was around 6/7 and that thing attacked me every time I went to feed it. I never stood between him and his food. I never bothered him. Bruh just wanted to eat me. Had a scar for a long time from when he tried to take a chunk out of my leg. I would have absolutely pressed charges in the medieval era.
These days that might fly. I used to get the MoHotta MoBetta catalog, and some of the hot sauce names were just wack--Ass in the Tub, Religious Experience The Wrath, Insanity Sauce.
I would stock the fridge with homicidal bacon! That would be a bold statement and would have to be killer bacon. Not to mention it sounds metal. Perfect bacon for middle aged Dad's bringing back straight razor shaving kits.
I can assure you that we don't mind the length of the videos changing. We're just all glad that you're doing well enough to make a video at all. As someone who hasn't been doing well enough IRL to resume making videos, I tip my hat to you.
I can't tell you how delightful the series title "Wild Crimes in Historical Times" sounds. I'm excited to see this series happen XD Also, I vote we bring back taking insects to trial. I'd personally like to sue mosquitos.
But can mosquitoes be held responsible for the Plasmodium that causes malaria? 🤔 Surely we live in more enlightened times! No, we must sue the microorganisms; anything else would be ridiculous.
I'd gladly enter this lawsuit, considering I was literally bedridden for MONTHS thanks to Chikungunya, which is a disease spread by mosquitoes. I wouldn't wish Chikungunya on my worst enemy, it is no wonder its popular name is "break-bone fever"
Honestly if you need to take a break that’s ok, hope things even out soon. Sending positive vibes. That being said, this video was awesome, I laughed out loud and am eagerly awaiting the next installment.
im sorry i don't know his name but i'm such a huge fan of the little blue rat in the background staring off into space as though he is seeing into the cosmos and has understood ths secrets of the universe
Anyone who wants some more about the animal trials, there's a lovely video by Historia Civilis called "Can Animals commit Crimes?" That covers several of the same cases.
10:04 I recall when King Henry VIII was talking with a diplomat about his rival, Francis I, he specifically asked if the French King's calves were as shapely as his own (this was when Henry was still young and physically fit, well before he became morbidly obese).
Pigs were NOT allowed to roam around freely in the streets. Aside from the obvious dangers they were quite valuable, so you wouldn't want the roam about uncontrolled for them to get into accidents or get stolen. Most places straight up had laws against this. What DID happen was that they were let out once per week or so to clean out the sty and in fall they were herded into the woods to fatten up on acorns and stuff. Those tasks were handled by swineherds, but its possible things could get out of control on those occasions which would explain the accidents. Source: The Medieval Pig by Dolly Jorgensen
Pigs can be mean critters. And yeah, nobody's letting the equivalent of the meat department roam uncontrolled. With cattle, it's the meat and dairy departments.
@Gear3k "changes in the land" is a book that also touches on this in early colonial America: some of the first laws were pig related. The book looks at land use change pre and post colonialization in New England
Hi! I think kaz is talking about the pigs protected by St Anthony's where I believe they were allowed to roam and charitably feed to be given to the poor? So like, this is a pretty specific case, but you'd be correct otherwise.
Idk what your metrics say but I would totally watch more “lower effort” content like this. I appreciate your meticulously put together videos but this is also great
Sorry to hear you've been having a rough time. I really enjoyed the video. It's nice to have something a little more lighthearted and fun. I think we all can use that sometimes. I look forward to all your videos, whether they are thought-provoking deep dives or silly true crime of the middle ages.
Excessively pointed poulaines indirectly led to the deaths of a lot of the Austrian nobility: in 1386 Austria fought a battle against Switzerland and had to dismount their horses due to the rocky terrain and remove their poulaines and fight barefoot, and Swiss halberdiers made short work of them. Some depictions of the Battle of Sempach include piles of these discarded shoes.
Ahhh!!! The Cake Song reference to " She wears a short skirt and a loooonnnnngggg jacket" I'm from their hometown, and they were in my social circle in the 90's, and it's still wild to me to hear them randomly referenced. I think I'm the only one who caught it!
Loved the video! I recently listened to a German podcast (Geschichten aus der Geschichte) where they cover the topic of animal trials and it is assumed/proposed that the defense speeches were training speeches written by law students. Super interesting either way, thank you for taking your time to make this and all the other amazing videos :))
5:00 I'd also wager that entertainment was fairly scarce and limited back then in many places, so the trial of an animal may also have been an excuse for some sort of show, at least in some cases. Got a nuisance critter who needs to be dealt with? Why not put them in the courtroom and get everyone else to come and have a watch as the beast is tried like a man?
I vaguely remember in one of the old Irish legends there's a bit where some hero gets angry at some mice for some reason and, on his own, puts them on trial, finds them guilty, and builds a teeny-tiny gallows to hang them. I think it's somewhere in the Cycles of the Kings, aka the Historical Cycle. Also, that late 14th century look with the wicked short tunics and snug leggings is my favorite men's fashion, and I keep hoping it will come back in style because I genuinely appreciate the look of a man's leg. \eyebrow waggle\
On the topic of Wild Crimes in Historical Times: I've been watching a lot of historical stuff about Australia, and was absolutely losing my mind over people who were transported out of the UK to Australia for shit like "Stealing handkerchiefs." Which is crazy bc 1.) some of them were forced to choose Transportation over the Death Penalty, 2.) People REGULARLY died just on the trip TO GET TO Australia.
I'm glad you're doing better. I hope what you went through doesn't come back. I enjoy what you talk about. I like this one, cause this historical info is funny and true. Thank you!
I’m sorry you’ve been having a rough time, I hope things get better for you soon ❤. What a fun and interesting video. Btw I’d definitely be a rat lawyer, they’re awesome creatures, and ive had several as pets.
Im sorry you have had a rough couple of months I hope things get better for you! I love your work so much and whenever you post I get so happy! Thank you for spreading wonderful history
Kaz, I've been enjoying your videos for a while now and while I obviously appreciate your interesting, articulate presentations, I want to say how much I love the effort you put into your costumes and sets/backgrounds. It warms my theatre nerd heart.
You’re one of the few people who I can watch without getting bored, I enjoy your videos but I’ve always been a history bug especially now when it came to medicine as I have several medical issues!
For what it is worth, I like the short form video. Not that I won't listen for literal hours straight, but its nice sometimes just to dip in to some medieval madness for a brief time.
The scrubbing of the fingers is quite interesting, as it was very common for monks to do this several times a day - they were expected to keep clean hands between many times of day, such as after using the privy, before prayer or rites, before reading or eating, sometimes also after eating, etc.
I was having to deal with a very hyper bunny of mine while listening to the animal trials and it gave me a chuckle. Even though my slippers got nommed he was trying to eat the rubber soles ^_^;. But he just got punished by being picked up and cuddled to which there was a great protest XDD pretty sure he's go in for round two when I fall asleep though lol
Wonderful video!! ❣️ The shorter length is just wonderful variation! Love everything you have to say and sometimes I don't have 40 minutes to sit down and focus and this is perfect!
Loved the shorter style honestly! If you end up wanting to do this to save time, just know that it doesn’t reduce quality, this was still entertaining and educational :)
Love a short light hearted video from time to time! Great way to spice things up and invite casual viewers who may not be in for a content dense and heavy video format. It also helps avoid the inevitable burn out you may feel. You’re doing amazing! Can’t wait for more in whatever format they may be🤍
im sorry to hear that you’ve been having a tough time :( please don’t let youtube get in the way of your self-care !! we’ll always be here when you’re ready to come back 🫶
I rarely use the RUclips app itself but came over after watching this just to say how much I enjoyed this format. It was the perfect viewing length while I had my breakfast. Hope to see some more videos in this style in the future 😊
Loved this video! I understand having to take some time and do something simple to recover from a busy time, and the quality of your work remains brilliant. Keep up the good work!
It's both discouraging but also encouraging to understand that "laws and justice" have always been anachronistic and archaic. Lady "Justice" still hasn't changed her blindfold.
I took a Criminology 101 class in college and one of the first things discussed was, basically, how crime has been defined historically (as opposed to what was considered bad behavior, but not criminal).
I really enjoyed this one! I would say make a low key video like this one periodically even when things aren't going poorly for you, just for the mental break aspect. They're still really interesting!
Sorry you've been going through a rough time, and I hope it improves soon. Thank you for your videos, I'm always really excited when I see a new Kaz dropped :)
I literally just finished The Once And Future Sex a few days ago and was like, damn if Kaz Rowe hasn't read this already I'm sure it'd go down a treat, and behold.
I really enjoyed this video! Short and spicy videos are excellent. I'm sorry you've been having a hard couples of months but your work is so well researched and edited, I always look forward to seeing your videos. Thanks for being such a cool role model
One if my favorite movies is Catherine Called Birdie which is a movie about a 14 year old girl in the Middle Ages. It takes her through her first period, her father trying to get her married (and her attempts to prevent it), and her mother's loss of child. It's on Amazon Prime and it's really good.
Sick cake reference. It reminded me of the time I saw them and thr lead singer joked about "the globalists" and someone yelled out "YEAhh". Sorry you haven't been doing the best but despite that you have been making great videos.

Kaz pls don’t worry about the video being too short, we just love any content from you and I still got a good amount of bracelet weaving done!
Professional historian here, with a PhD in medieval history. Great video. You're right, the middle ages were both creative and interesting.
A little disappointed to learn that it was a lawyer for rats and not a rat who was a lawyer, but I guess I still enjoyed the video (/s, video was great!)

Right? Me as well 😂

😮
Honestly, I am FINE with these sort of breezy / short videos from time to time. Not every one has to be an hour long, really.
imagine if the honey industry started rebranding their bottles "bad sinful energy" and bacon started using 'homicidal' on their packaging 🤣
