      Regard John the 22nd, The Catholics and the protestant were more or less in the eternal competition to one up each other during the early modern period.
      Given the evidence John 22nd didn't see any problem with alchemy under the proto-scientific method that is scholastic Theology which is specifically a very high church doctrine (given that God made the world therefore it must be study) Lutherans and high-church Anglicans practice scholastic Theology aswell but further divergence would seperate further with reformed and more literalist sects of Anglicanism which would birth out the Puritans ironically.

  • @theily1724
    @theily1724 2 месяца назад +2703

    The irony is that if there was a way to mass produce gold (that didn’t involve platinum), the value of gold would plummet, rendering the entire endeavor fruitless.

    • @hazenoki628

      Gold is a useful material though, an excellent conductor and it doesn't corrode. If we had an infinite supply of it we could use it for a lot of purposes it's currently too expensive for.

    • @nitzeart
      @nitzeart 2 месяца назад +79

      Depends on how cheap or expensive the procedure was. I think it would still be useful though because of the conductive, non-allergenic and other properties of gold. Like with diamonds that are used in industry. Maybe it wouldn't be a precious metal but we could use it for so many other things.

    I saw Flamel at a grocery store in Paris yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
    The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
    When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

It's done in a particle accelerator and costs insanely large amounts of money to create tiny amounts of gold, BUT ALCHEMY IS REAL WE DID IT!!!! also, it's hard to critique the old alchemists when we have lab made diamonds, obviously it's not the same but it seems equally improbable unless you're a scientist

    I read “The Alchemy of Paint” by Spike Bucklow and it’s a very interesting look at the intersection between creating artists’ pigments and alchemy. Artists had to follow certain alchemical practices to extract pigments. Like having to complete a certain series of tasks to extract ultramarine blue from lapis lazuli. There were even artists who wrote down their “recipes” for paint pigments but you’d have to know alchemy to be able to read it.
    It was very interesting

And given that the Zildjian company is still the world's leading cymbal manufacturer after 400 years, it's... sort of the same result.

      It varies, really. One Livonian general in the Swedish army was found to have deserted, and upon being called once again by Swedish authorities, he offered his alchemic skills as a way of indentured servancy. Roger Bacon dabbled in alchemy but he had a great deal of other areas to support him. Albertus Magnus seemingly just did alchemy as a wider range of his scholarly work, mostly translating older works.

    Regarding the Pope John XXII and his alchemy, it may be he was more against "false alchemy" and his decretal was mainly against the "false alchemy" he perceived. And he may have felt this way because of studying alchemy in his youth. Speculation based on light reading though.

    Re the question at 18:00 on the text attributed to John XXII. European alchemy isn't my specific area of expertise, and I don't know about John XXII's bibliography, but I believe that John XXII's ban was more directed at fraudulent alchemy (i.e. promising that imitation gold etc. was the real thing), rather than the entire pursuit, so it wouldn't surprise me if he wrote something on alchemy.

    Great video as per usual hun!!!!
    Just wanted to say that I got really excited when you mentioned Hermes Trismegistus and Hermeticism. Most sources on that stuff are very scholarly and not easy to understand so I wanted to ask if you’d ever consider making a video about Hermeticism. It’s fascinating as a medieval philosophy, and that’s not mentioning its modern day interpretations, and how it created The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, which then created modern Tarot as we know it today!
    Anyway, I hope you consider it. However, as long as you’re making videos I’m happy :3

    That whole bit about 'mercury' and 'silver' reminded me of the fact that almost nobody made bronze in the Bronze Age. Not modern bronze, anyway. They made lots of different copper alloys which they thought of as bronzes and called bronze but which now would not be called bronze.

    The reason I like and, therefore, am subscribed to your channel is because of your efforts to provide the whole picture. You make it a point to go beyond the many similar others with their tunnel vision that educational enlightenment and, heck, even civilization, as we know it, began in Europe. Their personal bias, possibly from ignorant racist upbringing and adherence, tend to wall up their research within that wilful confinement. So, thank you, for your educations about the contributions of other country's and culture's on your subject matters. 💞 💗

    That bit about Paracelsus and shifting from Galenic medicine towards pharmaceutica is really interesting. I had in my head that doctors were still reading Galen in the 19th century, which doesn't rule out chemical pursuits of medicine as a parallel route of inquiry... I just have so many questions now.

    loved this video (as always!), but i have a couple notes from ~9:00 - heads up that Carl Jung's name is pronounced "yoong" (it's a Swiss name so the sound is somewhere between an 'oo' and 'uh' sound, and the J is softened to a Y sound). also the stone you hold up seems to be a smoky quartz (it's hard to say for sure with the lighting).
    last note, with the phrase "as above, so below" it's actually been mistranslated; it's supposed to be something closer to "the above is of the below and the below is of the above", which may seem like the same thing, but the mistranslation gives the idea of each reflecting the other, while the original is saying that they are inherently intertwined, similar to a yin yang idea of one cannot exist without the other and there is a harmony in the similarities and differences in each (I hope I've explained that in a way that makes sense - twitchywitch on TT has a great video about it)
    please keep up the great work, i always look forward to your videos n_n

    As an artist, I see it as a spiritual concept/practice...long before I ever tried psychedelics, my artwork had many symbolic, spiritual/alchemical symbols...it was only until last year until I drew all the parallels in my own art practice to modern alchemical practice...the refining of my own art, body, mind and soul to create "gold"
    The moment I started to research masonry, alchemy and esoteric knowledge, my artwork became alot more impactful, and my use of symbolism was effective, and my career really took off, sales and gallery shows ❤
    Really wish I could share pictures in the comments :/
