I bought the HK LED backlight but now I'm going to go with the SmartieParts board with EL backlight. Your FET mod for the HK LED is excellent though. I'm a big fan of your TG9X + ER9X - Step by Step series. They explain a lot.
Thank you very much for these excellent instructions! I followed them last night in order to upgrade my 9x with a blue backlight and it worked great. Best instructions out there!
Hello! Thank you very much for this tutorial! Can you please make a video about how to convert the stock 8xAA battery holder in Turnigy 9X to a LiPo battery pack?
Hello! Just a question: Why to make this modification? We cannot directly plug the backlight in the transmitter? Thanks for your response and thanks for yours others step by step videos.
yes, as long as your remove the positive from the small board, im wondering what what line was cut in the PCB, it looks like it was cut to make use of the resistor on the positive side of the back light! surely they are both positive supply!
is the c945 and c144 a FET transistor or a regular EBC transistor? BS170 is a N channel FET transistor with Source Gate Drain and is voltage controlled, regular EBC transistors are current controlled! check if your available transistor is a N channel FET and it will work!
In the video it looks like you have cut through 3 tracks on the small PCB. Is it only the middle one that must be cut or all 3 ? Or is it that you used a disc cutter and "nearly" cut the other two? ;-)
I have some C945 and C144 transistors that I salvaged from old circuit boards. Would either of these work as a substitute for the BS170 ? Thanks for the instruction video. I put my backlight on and the radio wouldn't power up and after much searching I discovered one of the crystal pins had never been soldered on and the radio only worked because the original foam was pushing the pin over to where it made contact.
Richard Mrázek This modification of the backlight will switch off only when the software will be ER9X? Yes? And what if the original software will TH9X?
ok got it, using FET, Source to ground, Gate to MCU pin, Drain to removed negative Backlight line. BTW, does this only work when you flash the firmware to er9x?
I have 470 ohm resistors lying around. Can I use this to bypass the built-in transistor directly to red wire to the back light instead cutting the track on the pcb?
Richard, I have got the back light kit from hobbyking, but the light stays on all the time even when i turn the tx off!! do you know what causes this fault?
after seconds my bs170 shown resistance between 1 and 3. so it is no longer an electronic switch, it works like diode now. i racked 3 transistors (( i have done exactly like on video.
gate voltage (pin -2) is maximum 3 Volts on this transistor ! Onboard and pin17 voltage is same as in battery (12-9 V) !!! How you did not burn your transistor key???
hi there any help? will this only work with using the er9x firmware? I am still using an original firmware and tried this out but the backlight does not turn on in any way. Please help
nes2510 er9x or Open9x is with a setup for backlight. Original fw not. You can use backlight with original fw, but without mod with transistor. All is in video........
cut only the middle one. Trust me. I made the mistake and cut all three only to realize it was just the middle one that should have been cut afterwards. Had to reconnect the tracks i cut to make it work. haha. Learn from my mistake
Finally, i find mosfet and i begin the modify !! imageshack.us/photo/my-images/819/img0551fh.jpg What do you think ?? i cut in the right mode the ciruit ?? Thanks a lot for this vid !!!

Great vid. Thanks for the upload. You can also use 2N7000 FET in place of the BS170, but the S and D legs are the opposite.

You are the best my friend. Thank you as always for everything you do.

Thanks Richard. Great video. Can this mod be done before flashing to ER9x? If so would the backlight stay on or off?

Which exact transistor do i need to get? When i search on digikey i see BS170-ND, BS170 D75ZTB-ND, BS170 D26ZTR-ND etc...
Can I use a generic NPN transistor, such as PN222?

@richardmrazek
Thanks. then i don't cut the track, but is it necessary the wire bridge between resistor and pin3???
on the gate of bs170 you should add a resistor such as 4k7 or 10k .. you only need a few ma to trigger it ..
It is only a small FET, so no big gate capacity... and besides switching there flows no current anyway. I think that is no problem for that Atmega.
Is it necessary to cut the middle track? Or is only necessary for simulator runs without backlight?
Thanks
Richard, I have got the back light kit from hobbyking, but the light stays on all the time even when i turn the tx off!! do you know what causes this fault?
simply ingenius
great video..does this still work on the new version of the tx.
***** Which new version you think Jim? It works on all FlySky TH9x clones, like Turnigy T9x. 9Xr is with a display backlight directly from factory.
Richard Mrázek
i just got a flysky th9x and want to do this mod just want to make sure it will work .it dont have the 9xr firmware on it though.
thank you richard

Richard Mrázek
I tried this, worked on er9x but the screen dims instead of turning off. Can you please help? Thanks!
Why my TX screen the light on only switch on just second?
and then, not have any light.
The backlight have fix side? I saw difference skin.
+nes2510 - Did you setup of backlight in Er9x/Open9x? About orientation - look on movie, right orientation is "red wire down".
+Richard Mrázek (OK-RiMr)
The Program have menu for light? or
Must to up firmware? The original can't install Backlight?
Thanks.

Can't use auto light off. OK. Thanks.
dakujem! toto som potreboval :)
also 2n7000. thanks for the video.
Will the backlight come on from the stick usage?
Backlight is under motherboard...
Will backlight turns on ) when you touch stick ?
on 17:12 it will turns on when you press "-" button ) reaction on stick touch will be same ?
Алексей Могилин - it depends on setup in Er9x/OpenTx
Open9x is without a problem too.
Sign me up for a virtual membership! Not sure if I'll ever get to fly with you guys, but consider me there in spirit!
thank you
it does not work properly when my transmitter is working with audio voice option firmaware, on open 9x
I did all the steps, but the lights will remain valid! Please advice
Thank
Reza Ashrafi Hard to say Reza, where is a problem on your radio. This mod works hundreds times..
Richard Mrázek Please help me I really need :(
it has happened to me as well
but after couple of time it disappeared
