  • Ringing on this characterful, good sounding but extremely rough 28cwt 8 in the heart of Bristol. St Thomas church is invested in the CCT and its bells are well-known for being difficult to ring and they did not disappoint! Other than the hard-to-avoid notion that they all drop like a stone whether oiled or not, there is also the frame wobbliness, the dodgy ropes, the way some are light set and others deep set (and often the same bells which have both!) But all excellent fun! Good effort here from a band where these were a grab for 7 or 8 of the 10-strong group, well worth a ring on providing there is a reasonable band round! And yes the tenor fail was pretty spectacular but it takes more luck than skill to stand as it is ludicrously light-set at hand- and it makes a superb noise!! One of my favourite oddities here is the treble bell hangs between the 7 and 8 in the frame - this affects its go quite spectacularly!! :-)

Aye, a good old-fashioned sounding 8. Few new fittings on'em and they'd be excellent!! ;-)

Oh yes, they sound superb but really do go like the side of a house hence decent ringing on them is hard to come by for any length of time :-)

A friend of mine was doing some work on an old un-ringable ring of bells. he rang up the tenor, went upstairs and found it about a foot from the balance ON THE WRONG SIDE. VERY. BAD. BEARINGS!

No - Great George lives in the Wills Memorial building about a mile away from here:

@@simonbellringer they can be heard a little bit from the temple church which the cathedral's ring of 8 came from

It would be awesome to be a bell ringer

Well why not give it a go? I'm sure that if you turned up at your local tower they'd be delighted to give you a go and, if you had the taste for it, to teach you!! :-)

The thing has no handstroke! They are a tough, tough ring of bells - sound great, go terribly!
