    Goodbye Cadets 1934-2024
This band has been so influential for so many years, this band helped shape dci into what it is now and what it was 40 years ago and so. It's a shame I had never been able to see a cadets show but this is one of their best shows ever.

the proper term is corps, not band. . . . . but your assessment is right on the money.

The mellos just own this show. Their precision and grace is breathtaking to listen to. Even in the ballad, you hear them soar above the ensemble and drive them towards the final resolution.

I’ve listen to this recording so much. I really enjoy the two on top of three clapping hands heard in the recording at 2:38 seconds right before the corp hit. Start listening at 2:34. I smile every time. And I still get chills during the ballad.

Can we talk about 6:18 to 6:38 ? This has to be one of the most difficult sustains of all time from the hornline, as they are absolutely booking it at almost 200 bpm. The drumline is playing with so much control as they literally are running across the field. The colorguard is basically jazz running while performing intricate and demanding work, and they are So Clean. The entire corps NAILS the halt and the form is perfect. These are elite musical athletes right here, and in my opinion the difficulty of that moment is seldom paralleled in the activity.

I would be very happy if some drum corps adopted a 2003-style approach, with no amplification, props, or electronophones whatsoever, but still retaining the front ensemble. It would inject some much-needed variety into modern drum corps competitions. Heck, someone should bring back Lee Enfeld rifles!
(for context, in the 1960s, the Cavaliers [then known as the Chicago Cavaliers] and the Toronto Optimists spun Lee Enfeld rifles, and they weighed 9 pounds. The Optimists even spun them with bayonets attached!)

I have the highest respect for the performers and designers of today. However I can’t help but to feel that DCI lost some of the things that made it unique by including things that it once didn’t. Which is kind of wild for me to say, I’m all for things evolving 😅 I’m just not fond of the modern aesthetic.

It took me a while to "get" this show. Not only do I get it now, I can watch it over and over. The Mark Sylvester visuals (and Jeff) are so missed. I have a hard time with body suits and the extreme amount of body work (I like some of it) that I can't connect with modern DCI. This is what thrills me. OH that finale!!! CLASSIC CADETS at its very best...

@@DanCron yes a true gut punch. I feel like knowing I’ll never get to see the Cadets in person again is just a massive void. They played the first dci show I ever attended DATR 1993, and I’ve seen them just about every year (or close to) since. I can about look out my window to see where I watched them rehearse that iconic 2002 show. Every time I drive past that field, I think about how fun that was to watch them rehearse and then to watch the show that night. I’m sad but very thankful that they left us with such iconic breathtaking overjoyed musical moments. You’ll be forever in my heart Cadets…RIP

@@davewrobertsI too was at DATR 1993! What a great night that was! So many amazing performances. The music this year was surprisingly boring, but they executed it so well. Just listen to the dynamics and precision. I remember after a long rehearsal our corps was allowed to go watch the Cadets rehearse since they were practicing in a nearby field, and as good as we were and as highly as we placed, we all just knew these guys were one notch above us. Even in rehearsal while they marched in the dark, we could tell. It was a humbling, but wonderful experience.
