    In music media, context and backstory are often conflated as the storyteller attempts to organise and explain the circumstances by which an artist and their work came to be. "For me, the worst nightmare would be ending up with a film that's somehow a construction of an artistic figure that had this singularity and a growth path, if it started with photos of childhood and then talking to different people in chronological order about when they knew me," Terre Thaemlitz, the mind behind monikers like DJ Sprinkles, K-S.H.E. and G.R.R.L., tells director Patrick Nation in Give Up On Hopes And Dreams. For Nation, executing the documentary meant challenging many of his filmmaking instincts. With help from story editor Lawrence English, he had to move aside urges to shape the narrative in a linear or overly conclusive way.

    Hats off to Patrick Nation who did a brilliant job of making a non-cliché documentary and working with one of the most intimidating musicians and thinkers of our time. Essential viewing for anyone attempting to grasp the complexity and contradictions within Terre's work, but don't expect too many answers

    More of this pls. Dance music docs are so painfully formulaic nowadays, nice to actually walk away from something more intellectually and musically curious than cynical

    Some of it is over my head. Some of it i feel doesnt concern me. Some of it i really enjoy hearing.
    But what i like most is hearing people discusss their emotions in society and how society is accepting or not accepting of certain art. Its just great to hear intelligent people think and discuss among all this basic bullshit media we get that is vapid of anything thought provoking.
    Thank u Terre always

    Wonderful documentary. A real bombardment of stuff to think about, as usual with Thaemlitz. Kudos to RA for making this in this way, which does seem to suit the topic better than the standard DJ-documentary. Kinda bummed I didn't get to see Thaemlitz sitting in a bath complaining about the vagaries of travel though (but I'll live).

    Hope is the last remaining demon/spirit released in the Greek Myth of Pandora's box. Terre is correct, maybe hopes/wishes and dreams are a distraction, if we stop 'hoping" we can be more practical, and start "doing" more. Hope under the microscope is a futile and fruitless distraction, it needs relegating alongside "thoughts and Prayers".

    This came across as really hateful and mean-spirited. I guess that's what happens when people give up all hope and embrace a purely materialist perspective. But to be locked into an identity of criticism and critical thinking at all times prevents you from being open to others and allowing you to find commonalities across differences. I find myself in agreement with a lot of what Sprinkles says, in many cases quite deep agreement. But to say that you hate all religion and all spirituality...why make music, why make art? Where does the impulse to do so come from? Why the impulse to express pain and suffering through art if not to connect with others? A purely materialistic world view cannot explain anything about the world including any of the mysteries. One of which is laughter. You can go through your life criticizing everything around you always, but you can also let go and just be. And laugh. The criticism of Bugs Bunny was very insightful, but sometimes a cartoon can be just a cartoon. And by the way, the reason I felt the need to type out this comment is because I agree so strongly with so much of what Terre says and examines, I'm hyper critical myself. But there is a thing in the world that exists that is beyond the materialist, critical perspective - it's called Love.

    I was expecting more questions and opposing ideas in the comments?? I mean, just felt so blaaaa to me. “Conspiring” on bringing children into the world 😂 That’s just extra , how do you even get to that thought. I get a sense of insecurity with a lot of the opinions so strongly stated.

    • @vogelvogeltje
      @vogelvogeltje Год назад +4

      Did you even read the words before and after that sentence? It’s her opinion. She says it’s unethical to bring children into a world rife with violence, cruelty, injustice, poverty, and prejudice.
      You obviously didn’t like that sentence, you felt attacked. Sometimes you have to step outside of yourself and think about how someone might get to thinking like that, what they have experienced… etc.

    • @djbcubed
      @djbcubed 11 месяцев назад +1

      @@vogelvogeltje The world has bad things in it therefore we should all stop having kids and die is just teenage nihilist philosophy. The perspective makes sense given her life experience, but honestly it is not a very compelling or convincing argument. If everyone took this nihilist perspective she has to everything in life, we would all be sitting at home doing nothing because of the possibility of bad outcomes, not convinced that is a way to move forward in the world

    • @pend8484
      @pend8484 8 месяцев назад

      I agree I found this very to be very mean spirited overall. Upsetting because I actually agree with a lot of ideas that Terre has, but to be in a hyper-critical mindset at all times prevents one from actually connecting with others. Art can be a bridge.

    I couldn't take this seriously after Mark Fell & 'Joy' were used in the same sentence. It has been a very long time since RA delivered a decent piece
