  • INCIDENT DATE/TIME: 1-3-23 | 1:00 PM
    LOCATION: San Bernardino Mountains
    AREA/CITY: San Bernardino Mountains
    DETAILS:
    A Large traffic jam built up quickly as a slew of spin outs occurred. Originally two sedans spun out and crashed into each other in front of the CHP office. Shortly after a snow plow had to stop to avoid hitting the cars and slid off the road and got stuck. then shortly after and semi truck 18 wheeler had to stop to avoid both incidents and slid into the middle of the road and got stuck. further more, almost a dozen other sedans, suv’s and pick up trucks had to stop on the banked road and all began to slide of the road themselves. As of now the road is not passable as they work to get the large trucks out first.
    Daly canyon rd is known for its steep, strait and icy conditions during snow storms. there were dozens of vehicles that became stuck through out the morning, some of them slid off the road and crashed completely, others just got plain stuck in the middle of the road forcing other vehicles to stop and get stuck them selves or to stop down hill and still slide off the road.
    Here a vehicle was traveling down north bay road and began to slide side was and crashed into an on coming snow plow. the snow plow sustained minimal damage, but the small vehicle was badly damaged. No one was injured in the collision.

      California mountains are near the ocean, so the snow has a very high water content. After the storm goes through, the cold front goes through and all that water freezes into boiler plate ice. The roads become skating rinks. CalTrans should be sanding that road, not just plowing it.

      This is what we used to call a "heart attack snow:. Wet. heavy and a bear to try to shovel, and us old guys go out and shovel and BAM, down we go. It is interesting that even with 4 WD and CHAINS ON ALL 4, can't move. That snow is so wet and heavy, it just packs down and it's hard to get traction. If it goes to 20 degrees or lower, chains will work wonders. I have a 4x4 winter beater with 4 studded snows and just for kicks, I have chains for the rear tires. PLUS 120 pounds of sand over the rear axles. But we haven't had SQUAT for snow yet this season.

    It should be illegal to sell new vehicles (outside of sports cars) in snow-prone areas with all-season tires. All-terrain should be required. I switched from all-season on my SUV to All-Terrain and it is like night and day. All-season is a farce. They suck in snow and are only marginal in rain. I got stuck in my GRASS yard in the middle of summer with all-season. Ridiculous. Also, stop buying 2WD vehicles. AWD or 4WD is preferred and safer. Learn to use your AWD/4WD system.

Looks like the Model Y pulled over into both places (look at the tire marks: no turns, it drove straight in), and also looked like the Rav4 did too. Looks like they're parked waiting for the Plow to clear. No indication that they were attempting to drive. Same with the Sonata w/ chains and Subaru next to the plow. I couldn't tell if any of the vehicles on the road were stuck. Also, I'm pretty sure pushing the CR-V wasn't doing anything for it, lol.

    Welcome to Southern California where drops of drizzle freaks people out. Clearly you can see this isn’t much of snow and in normal cities this would consider a very good road conditions. However in SoCal, this is a winter storm and people have to get stuck/cause accidents. Common sense people. Cali people don’t know how to drive. Period.

    • @Bacnow
      @Bacnow 7 месяцев назад

      This is NOT “drizzle”! This is heavy, wet slush with a layer of ice to boot! I know it looks benign but it’s one of the worst conditions for driving! If you noticed, that front wheel drive SUV couldn’t gain any traction with chains and two helpers pushing! Heck, even the plow was struggling to maintain traction! I agree about SoCal drivers, though! They only do well in non-inclement weather conditions (which is 99.9% of the time).

    • @stevenkim9637
      @stevenkim9637 7 месяцев назад

      @@Bacnow Huh? Rain or shine, SoCal drivers don’t know how to drive. Period. The only decent drivers who can drive ok is people who aren’t from SoCal. 405, 5, 10, 101, 91, 60, 210, 15, 805, 163, 52… you name whatever freeway, it’s always full of people who don’t know how to drive. Typically they love to “sleep” in the fast lane/carpool lane, they don’t care how many cars they’re holding behind them in queue when there’s no car in front of them. They’ll set the cruise at 65mph or lower, and then will stay there until they need to exit the freeway. And then there’s the ones who don’t know how to merge the freeway. Gas is on the right, but they seem to get confused when they’re merging from the on-ramp.
      And let’s not forget, those people who decide to stop in the fast lane. Whether you’re involved in the accident or have mechanical issues, by no means you should move your vehicle to the shoulder if you can’t make it to the next exit. Things can happen unexpectedly, but typically even when you’re out of fuel or your car suddenly dies, you still have the momentum to change lanes and pull over to the shoulder. But no, SoCal drivers tend to just decide to block a lane in the busy freeway, then don’t use hazards or open trunk/hood to let other people know they have issue with their vehicle. They simply just sit in the car, on their phone don’t minding the miles of traffic they’re causing.

A little 2wd car on studs would walk up and down those little hills with ease. Reality is 99.9% of people in California will not have winter tires or studded tires unless they are a local in the mountains that lives in areas that get frequent snowy/icy condition. In this video, that area is a tourist area, which actually gets little snow, so you're gonna get city folks trying to come up with worn out street tires. My family wagon awd with Falcon Wildpeak tires will do just fine as long as all 4 wheels stay on the ground, lol. My vehicle is full time awd.
