I’m not old enough to have watched this since I was born in 99 but watch this game every couple years when I want to see a whole group of people connect for a better good
RESPECT to you, brother. Our Humanity transcends sports rivalries. Met Fan here. Had a terror attack occurred in the ATL you best believe I'd be pulling for The Braves to win in their first game back playing.
Agreed. It was such an amazing moment in time for USA. Sold out stadium right after that disaster, then the hero of the Mets hits a moon shot to win the game. Unreal
One of the most dramatic games the Mets ever played...Along with The Game" playoffs against Astros 16 innings and same year World Series Redsox game 6. Mets most memorable moments in time.
this topped them all - as a human (old enough of course) we all remember that tragic event (from what we had for breakfast, to seeing it on the news, to who called us, etc.) - especially since I live in Jersey across the Hudson and the smoke itself (notably after the collapse - which is fishy to begin with but we wont get into that; was just something you cant forget) - but as a met fan this as a similar aura about it, wherein you remember what u were eating that night to where you were watching it, etc. - this met homer is not only the greatest met homer ever - its top ten historical home runs, period
I’m a Braves fan and I remember how intense this rivalry was at this time. None of that mattered on this day. Watching this pregame and how the players and coaches came together gives me chills every time. If you weren’t around during this time, you probably don’t understand how big of a role sports played in helping our country get back on our feet and start healing. God bless America. 🇺🇸
Don’t mess with America. No matter what opinions we have, who we voted for, or what we believe we always rally together during tough times! God bless America! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I’m 30 and the only times I can remember when the country was truly united were right after 9/11 and then when we killed Osama in 2011. That’s it. We need to feel this way again and it shouldn’t take a national tragedy or military victory to do it.
By sheer coincidence we had tickets for that game, so i was there that night, I'll never forget it. One of the most amazing evenings ever, the love of country was overwhelming. And a great game too!
I was nervous just watching this game on that night, as a tragic event had happened only 10 days before, worried for the safety of those people in the stadium, risking there lives but being brave Americans. But the moment that mike came up to the plate and hit that home run, my favorite all time met made me jumpy and believing again that all will be okay, miss ya mike and god bless America! We will get through these tough times too!!
This was an amazing moment in MLB history and as a fan of MLB, and a true blood American, that Homer by Piazza was so incredible. I watch this game every few years on 9/11. God Bless America
I never understood the MLB tradition of teams not acknowledging each other regardless of who wins. I am a NYer who remembers this game so vivdly, and it was awesome to see two rivals just acknowledge each other and say, "hey, it's a game. We're all in this together."
I cheered with tears when he hit that,I live in NJ and could see the smoke in the air that day on 9/11 if it was gonna be someone He was one and he became the one to do it ..Thank You Mike
I was privileged to be at that game and wish I had saved the ticket stub. Fortunately I did have my old camera and managed to get a few photos. Otherwise no one would believe me. I remember how the Mayor was passionately cheered. What happened to him? Then of course there was that majestic home run.
Mets fan here, I was 14 years old at this time. My family lost a couple of friends in the World Trade Center on that tragic day. I remember watching this game, and for one night I didn't hate the Rival Braves for this game! The Home Run for sure healed everyone. I believe i heard a number of Braves players and fans say after the game that they were glad to have lost this game
Wht an emotional night it was tht night. It felt like all of America was watching tht game n when Mike Piazza hit tht homerun, not only the entire city of New York was on his shoulders but America was on his shoulders. I wonder how many people are still thanking Mike for hitting tht homerun from tht night 20 years ago???
Easily one of the most important sporting events in the history of our country...I didn't realize it at the time but from then to now the world sure has taken a dark turn....
The Mets at this point were also on the middle of making a tremedous comeback for the NL East. Mets were out 14 games in the loss column by August 19 I think, and they had 39 games left, and then the Mets just started winning non-stop, while Atlanta and Philly just kept struggling, and the Mets almost made a tremendous comeback, but sadly, they came up short due to two heart breaking losses against Atlanta in September.
I have never heard the call for Piazzas home run from neither: - The Braves TBS station (this game was shown on TBS) - The Braves radio station - Mets radio station
The love of America.. thesearerealhumans that felt NyM pain Atlanta braves are gentleman..AND THEN PIAZZAS HOMER THAT made 3 kids that lost there dad in 9/11 . There mom said it’s the first time they smiled since they lost there dad. Man piazza if did that for them you are Amazing
I was a met fan but know more than ever.. it’s like Piazza kinda didn’t want people to say he was hero. We got it cause hefeels that everyone down there giving there lives to find lives...pure love
Big New York Mets Fan Mike Piazza is my Favorite Mets player and I to me I thought this was his best game ever and if Mike Piazza didn’t hit the home run in the 8th inning and lost the game Mike Piazza would be in the hall of fame as a LA Dodgers Player because he played for The Dodgers from 1992-1998 then The Florida Marlins before the Miami Marlins but boy Mike Piazza was on the New York Mets at the Right Place at the Right Time
Please remember and realize how many are suffering now from being there but seriously don’t even know how amazing if they are still alive they are.. and piazza said that he’s no hero . Yea but he is
And since this we be lost toooooooooo many over seas... and there is no thanks.... remember this country is only free because someone lost their son husband wife and sibling
If the Mets had ANY sense at all, they were put up the July 4, 1985 game in its ENTIRETY. Not just the condensed version that doesn't even show Keith Hernandez' cycle completing single that they showed on MSG years and years ago before SNY existed. And definitely not he John Sterling Braves broadcast that is floating around on RUclips. Even smarter, they would air it on SNY on July 4 (since no...there won't be games by then), again, also in its full 6+ hour entirety. Although on RUclips without commercials, it would be probably only around 4.
Being a huge met fan and huge piazza fan what this guy did I truly believe God made that happen its like something out of a movie the first time nyc was quite down confused depperesed angry thousands love ones gone in the longest morning of any new yorkers life the first game in ny bottome of the 8th Mets down piazza gets up to bat and slames one ........ for the first time for that brief min nyc had something to cheer for this game will always be in my heart as the day NY had something to smile about that's the beauty of sports it takes your mind off life RIP to the 343 brave men who stormed in and never made out even tho it was the darkest day in ny but for the the FDNY NYPD Port authority EMS it will go down as the greatest rescue In history thousands more would of died if they didn't do there job right to this day I had to be 7 on 911 I can still smell the smoke that blew into brooklyn
Braves fan here...i was watching this as a kid on TBS and man I wasn't even mad when Piazza hit that HR...I was a NY fan that night
I’m not old enough to have watched this since I was born in 99 but watch this game every couple years when I want to see a whole group of people connect for a better good
As a Braves fan I was pissed he hit that homer. But I knew the Braves was in a no win situation that night
I wish tbs still had the games. Braves fan also.
RESPECT to you, brother. Our Humanity transcends sports rivalries. Met Fan here. Had a terror attack occurred in the ATL you best believe I'd be pulling for The Braves to win in their first game back playing.
Mets fan here and I was happy you guys won the world series last year after mlb took the all-star game away from your fans for a stupid reason
Watching this 20 years later, on the eve of the 2021 anniversary & still getting chills 🥲
Piazza is a legend.. this game is mentioned on his plaque in Cooperstown
Revisiting this again 20 years later is emotional. The resiliency of the city and the world to move forward leaves me speechless

I wonder if there's recording somewhere of Bob Murphy's radio call.

Fuck yea
With the current state of the country I truly hope you’re right. For all of our sakes.
Well said. Agree 100%
This is a country known for its fads and its tendency to overreact to issues and then forget them as everyday life pushes them into the background.
By sheer coincidence we had tickets for that game, so i was there that night, I'll never forget it. One of the most amazing evenings ever, the love of country was overwhelming. And a great game too!

Yeah, it's hard to believe where we are now as a country compared to the time of this game...

DIANNA ROSS SOUNDED JUST GREAT SINGING "GOD BLESS AMERICA".
It was a great tribute to the NYPD, NYFD, Port Authority and everyone else who helped to find victims of this tragedy. The city really camè together.

KnickKnack07 great point!! Crazy game!!
do you think he will hit it out again?
Strongest ever. No roids and only uses his upper body power. Imagine if he used his legs for more power.
Howie!
The broadcast was SO bad back then. They didn't even show the curtain call.
This wasn't the braves of now. Those were bobby coxs braves. Hitting a Homer of those boys isn't an easy task

I still can’t believe we traded Piazza
We didn't
REY SANCHEZ PLAYED FOR THE CUBS, KANSAS CITY, YANKEES, GIANTS A D METS AS I CAN REMEMBER.
Mets were so bad that year up until the last 6 weeks of the season
Lived seeing Liza Minelli.
Seeing is one thing, hearing is another. Nice of her to lip sync during such a meaningful moment in history. Embarassing.
Back when we loved the police…
Her singing god bless America ruined it😑 why put extra effort it sounds worse sing it not make a show out of it.
At 8:41 that is my father right there
