“I’ve Never Felt Worse About Myself”.. How Tattoos Have Changed Me!

  • Today, i'm opening up about a topic that's deeply personal.. and it’s on how tattoos have impacted my self-perception over time. When I first started getting tattoos, they made me feel incredibly confident and happy. However, as I continued to get more and more tattoos, something unexpected happened. Instead of them boosting my self-esteem (like they once did), I now started feeling increasingly self-conscious and uncertain about my appearance.
In this video, I'll be sharing my journey with tattoos-how they initially transformed my confidence, and how, over time, they've contributed to feelings of self-doubt. I'll talk about the reasons behind this shift in my perception and what it means for me moving forward. Whether you have tattoos yourself or are considering getting one, I hope my story offers some insight into the complex relationship we can have with our body art.

Woke up from my nap and was pleasantly surprised & shocked to see the amount of comments regarding this videos topic. First off, I want to genuinely say thank you to everyone for watching the video and sharing your thoughts and opinions!! Secondly, like I mentioned at 9:24 i didn’t make this for you to feel bad about me.. I did it because I wanted to be transparent with you all about the hurdles one might potentially face (and that Im currently facing) when going down this route of being “heavily” tattooed. Everything that I feel is because of my own doing.. like letting strangers opinions impact my life/feelings, comparing myself to the things I see on social media and just being very hard on my own self… I know that all already and take full responsibility for letting it all get to me and making me feel the way I do.
I appreciate you all for the support and feedback. 🙏🏼 Next tattoo video of me going back to France to start the Leg sleeve is coming in about 2 weeks so keep your eye out for that AND goooo get a your dad the perfect Father’s Day gift at www.manscaped.com Using the code “INKED” to GET 20% OFF + FREE SHIPPING 🪒🍒

The complete ignorance on microtia is so bad and im sure every person that has some form of microtia can relate to you because we've all dealt with the same type of comments throughout our lives and constantly being singled out because of something we literally have no control of. Props to you for being able to rock short hair and be comfortable with having your ears exposed.
I have microtia type 1 in my right ear and relate so much to the body dysmorphia and insecurities about your ears. Ive never been comfortable having short hair where my ears were exposed because of it. Luckily, I look a lot better with long hair, but even now, it's still something that I struggle with from time to time.
That being said, you are in a very unique position to help other people who struggle with microtia because of you making your videos and being open about your condition. Especially for those with microtia who are still growing up. Focus on the positives your videos and openness about your condition can have for other people struggling with similar conditions or just body dysmorphia in general.

We all have some level of body dysmorphia so I feel for you brother. I think you're being extremely hard on yourself.. Just know that your videos and insight into tattooing have helped a lot of people. I got my first tattoo about 3 weeks ago (forearm sleeve) and spent hours watching your videos to make sure I was prepared. Apprecaite what you do man.

Dont look at the negative comments man, people will always be rude and always try to take you down, but there will always be good people there for you watching you. Always remember the blessing you were given and the life you have and enjoy it bro. We only have one life, love it with no regrets we care about you.

  • @doka1747

When I first started watching you videos, i never saw your ears or hearing aid, i saw someone who just wanted to share their experiences and advice about tattoos. Someone who was honest enough to say they hurt like hell in places, how to look after them and all that. For me Tattoos are for me and no one else. Probably why , even though i consider myself having more ink that most people, i can still cover them up and avoid the negative comments and opinions of people that don't understand or don't want to understand.
I got to admit I have days where i don't like my tattoos, but other days i love them and they remind me why i got them and what they mean to me.
Your videos helped me get through some sessions and I can understand where your coming from, but do what you want to do and don't worry about the people that don't understand.

It's a relief to watch such an honest video, i can relate to it so much. The more tattoos i get, the less i show them off. Currently half way through a full back and with a holiday coming up, im not sure about getting it out.
I think tattoo regret is far more wide spread than people realise, im always looking at ways, designs, artists that can improve or cover my older designs.
I also got hearing aids earlier this year, which i put off for far too long!! Turns out they Bluetooth to my phone and now some of my friends also want them 😂.
Anyway, this is a great video and only makes you more relatable brother 👊

I always just cover up everything when I'm having a day that I don't want to have eyes on me. I always knew those days would come so I never got my hands, neck, head, or face tattooed. I have full sleeves and one leg sleeve from some of the best artists in the world so I can relate to you for sure. Whenever I go anywhere heads turn just like you said because the quality of the work is incredible. You just have to remind yourself how badass you are and remember the reason why you chose the art you did.

Same here - I can cover mine with a long sleeve shirt and long pants... I have thought long and hard about getting my hands done because that is a huge step, and one that it not so easily covered. There will always be THOSE looks from certain people, and I wouldn't want to put that on someone I am hanging out with - if I am meeting their family, boss, etc... easier to have the option to cover up if necessary.

Justin, I've been a subscriber for quite some time now and it pains me to hear that sadness in your voice, especially the way you perceive yourself. You are beautiful and have a very kind spirit. Please remember that. Tattoos are meant for us to express ourselves regardless of how they make others feel. If anything they are a blessing because they are a conversation starter. I remember getting my first tattoo 3 years ago. Now I'm at a leg sleeve and almost done with my 2 arm sleeves. You inspire me to feel great about expressing myself and I hope you see this as a way for you to also express yourself.
I admittedly have gotten hate from people I thought were close to me. I got anime tattoos and some people I thought were my friends told me that my tattoos are "dumb cartoons that I am going to regret when I am 60". Let me tell you that tattoos are so much more than what is shown. They are periods in your life of happiness that you can reflect on. That are memories that you carry with you daily. They are beautiful forms of art that you can openly express.
Thank you for being the amazing person that you are and I hope to continue seeing you radiate that amazing attitude that you have!

Dude, I just want you to know that your tattoos look amazing! I only have two right now and I plan to get many more to cover most of my arms and so on. I've learned that some people are never going to like tattoos no matter how good they are. So when I hear people on the street or wherever talk I just ignore them, mostly because I got these tattoos for me. It's nice to have others appreciate them but as long as I'm happy with them that's all that matters! Hope you have a good day!

I’ve been watching your channel for about a week now, and I immediately subscribed after seeing your video about tattoo healing with Saniderm. I’m getting my first tattoo on June 17th, and it’s going to be a sleeve on my left arm. It’s crazy that I’m starting with an entire sleeve, but I know what I want, and I’ve saved up for this.
You have truly inspired me and made me feel confident with every video I watch. Your advice on tattoo care, what to expect, and pain levels in different areas of the body has given me the knowledge I need to prepare for my first tattoo. Although I wanted to start at 18, I waited, and now I’m finally getting my first one at 28 years old.
I also wanted to mention that I never noticed anything negative about your ears until you pointed it out in this video. Honestly, I don’t focus on people’s perceived flaws because we’re all unique in our own ways, and it’s upsetting that others judge someone for a deformity.
You’re amazing and inspire a lot of people, even those without tattoos, who want to learn more before starting this journey. ❤️

People feed off of your confidence or lack there of, so don't let the latter show. The problem is, the ones talking shite are the minority, so they stand out to you more. Smile at the B.S. and know that you have more fans than hatters!

For what it's worth, I first started watching you around 2020 or 2021, I remember seeing you get your sleeves which were (and still are) the coolest thing I've ever seen and I even went as far as to follow and contact the artist that made it possible - all of this to say, I've watched a fair amount of your videos throughout the years, even ones where there's a lot of moving involved and what not like when you covered all your tattoos with make-up for a prank, and I had never noticed anything about your ears.
The internet is particularly good at putting a magnifying glass on one's insecurities, especially physical ones, but just remember that most average normal people are not noticing the small imperfections that you yourself notice about yourself =)

Remember it is also not a bad thing at all to be content with what you have. If you are the kind of person that always strive towards something better even though what you have is great it is very hard to appreciate what you have. Thats why I think that being content is a luxury in this day and age for most people especially since artwork like tattoos amongst a plethora of other things are so readily availble to look at thanks to the internet and social media. Keep up what you're doing its great stuff!

I completely agree with your feelings, I am about 75% covered and I get so much attention into my looks it has put a lot of pressure on me to improve my physical appearance, for us women is also problematic as only a certain type of body is featured as acceptable for some pieces. You feel like you need to look like a model in order to be exposed or to get uncover for the tattoo process.
I also feel I am constantly regretting some work I have as it is no longer good enough, when I am surrounded by people that knows about tattoos I feel mine are not that nice anymore.
Like you, I got some pieces to take the attention away from some deformities I have specially in my back and legs, is just overwhelming. I fully understand how you are feeling, now days I just try to appreciate my collection and continue my journey with the open space I still have

I'm really sorry to hear about your struggles with self confidence Justin. I think it's a massive shown of character for you to come on here so publicly and say such things, especially as a man. I remember a photo of you in Las Vegas sitting down and I thought wow, this guy is stunning with his clothes and tattoos. The thing is you don't see your beauty the way we do and that is a shame. I'm not sure if you already have some sort of therapy that could help, but I know in the past it's help me not be in my own head so much. The truth is people really don't care as much as we think they do about the negatives of another person, most people are too busy battling their own insecurities to notice. We are always taught in life it's you versus the world, well that's not actually true in the end its actually you just trying to conquer yourself.

Body dysmorphia is a hell of a drug... for me it's like looking in a funhouse mirror, I never know what impression of myself I'm going to get and positive or negative, it takes on a life of its own even after I've caught a reflection. It's like building self image on quicksand. I also fall victim to projection, which is like when you take your own self-judgement and imagine that everyone else is thinking it and then you get defensive because you feel judged. Of course there is real judgement in the world but lots of times my insecurity is just playing tricks on me. I decided recently that if I'm being judged by others they better be really obvious about it because I'm not trying to be my own hater and like "mind read" people. Anyways, I hope you do come to a place of radical acceptance and radical self love - also, you actually have some of my fav tattoos on the internet!

I'm glad you brought this subject up. I have felt the exact same way. You have hit a point that everyone is feeling after dealing with the Internet, it doesn't matter what subject. Now just imagine how bad it is for young kids who are not so formidable. Thanks for putting this out there. Wow...really universal statement on comparisons and self consciousness.

I've watched and re-watched your videos over the years as I went through the healing process of all 5 of my tattoos, but I never noticed the hearing aid until a more recent video and never noticed anything about your ears until you mentioned it in this video. I truly only ever thought that this guy is so cute and so helpful, even after this video. Keep doing you and let go of what others think beloved (easier said than done I know, but keep trying. Therapy helps if you have access). Much love!

Strong and motivating video. People were commenting on me, my appearance, my body all my life and at one point it really crushed my confidence, even though I‘m like you a really respectful, empathic and handsome guy. Over the years I found back my confidence, tattoos helped with that. Now I‘m really happy, but coping with these irrationals self-doubts is still have difficulties with sometimes. And that‘s totally okay. I accepted myself not only with my flaws in appearance, but also with my mental flaws. It‘s totally fine to have self-doubt or insecurities. If the pressure is getting too high and keeps your mind busy all day, a therapy might help. But it‘s not always the solution. Self acceptance was more important to me, than therapy. Stay strong 🙏

Another tattoo addict here! I feel like everytime I'm getting tattoed I focus more on the new "emty space" surrounding the new tattoo and how I'm going to continue to fill that "gap". I've also spent hours and hours on instagram and constantly seeing tattoos I want for myself.
In my own personal tattoo journey I started off in lightning speed. Now I've realized that the tattoo itself isnt whats the most fulfilling. Its the journey itself. The stuff I got in the beginning wasnt bad at all... but I rather get a tattoo I have to work really hard to get then anything else. I really enjoy the whole process! I dont know how you feel about it, but I almost enjoy it more the more difficult it is to get it done, haha! (demands a longer process). Currently working on a backpice where I have to fly to a diffrent country for every session and I've done projects like this before!
By the way, your tattoos are amazing... Its easy to get blinded by something you constantly see everyday! And your situation as a "tattoo influencer"(?) isnt easy.., getting judged by all the intrernet trolls all day long. Stay strong! Your doing a fantastic job and inspire me and many others in this community!

Appreciate you making this video man. It takes guts to make a video and open up to the public about things that your channel is built off of, this being tattoos obviously. I also can relate with a lot of it. I grew up in a household and areas where tattoos are not common, so for me to become very heavily tattooed, it is sometimes hard to deal with. Dont get me wrong, I will always love tattoo art and culture, however constantly looking different compared to everyone else, can be a little daunting at times. It's hard to be invisible when you're having bad days and can be challenging when you always have people staring and judging. But, it's the price we pay for doing what we've done and that's what comes with the territory of being heavily tattooed, especially hands/neck/face like I have. Respect man 🤜🤛

So within the last 6 years I have constantly been tattooed. Like almost a monthly sitting. I have now completed my full upper body. There is always gonna be some one bigger and badder that has better tattoos than me. But I also think I have gotten what I wanted in my body. It’s my journey, my story. Same goes for you. This is a path you are on to find yourself. And for what it’s worth your tattoos are so good especially your chest piece.

I commend you for being so open and honest and vulnerable. I struggle with comparisons in other areas of my life and body, not my tattoos, but social media is definitely the culprit so I’m taking a step away from it. I’m limiting how I’m using it. It makes it hard when it’s literally your job or passion, like you with your RUclips etc. But you need to find a healthy balance for your own mental heath when you find yourself falling victim to comparison to that extent.
And to the assholes making fun of your appearance, they need to grow up. Mature adult and good humans don’t make fun of people. That’s childish behavior. Maybe they are insecure about something in themselves and making fun of people gives them the smallest dopamine fix, but it’s not sustainable. They are probably some of the most miserable people in the world.
And for the record, I literally never noticed your ears before. I just really enjoy your tattoo content. Sending you good vibes ✨✨✨

I waited a long time to start getting tattooed and love them all, Was hoping to get a lot more, but have to quit because of heart problems and the danger of infection. It seems like every time I go in public with short sleeves I get compliments on my ink. And I've got sleeves, hands, both sides of my neck and both sides of my head. So far I feel very comfortable and proud of my ink. Have only had one negative comment from someone who I don't respect anyway. You look great, your ink looks magnificent. Be proud.

I respect your vulnerability in sharing this! Thank you for taking the time to share your very human experiences and feelings. A lot of what you shared resonated with me. I’ve been working towards a bodysuit and love my tattoos which have boosted my confidence. As a woman of color, I’ve been unpacking a lot of my experiences with racial micro-aggressions I experience when I’m out in the world; layer that with being heavily and visibly tattooed. I’ve carried a lot of anger about ways I’ve felt “othered” and therapy has helped me recognize that although many of the experiences I’ve had around this are 100% valid and rooted in my lived experience, it has also helped me recognize the projections I carry about what I THINK others are thinking of me (which may or may not be true at all). Realizing when I’m projecting and acknowledging what comes up for me then has helped me feel less angry and less “othered”. Therapy has also helped me recognize that others’ projections of me are a reflection of their inner world, belief systems, culture, conditioning, etc. Anger feeling less than does still come up, but I’ve learned to have more self-compassion in these moments. I love my tattoos and having the opportunity to creatively express who I am, even though others may not understand or agree. I’ve also grappled with feelings of not being “enough“ especially in the professional sense. This is where my imposter syndrome has come up most of the time. I’m very grateful and privileged to be able to be who I am and not hide my tattoos (I can’t at this point lol) in the senior roles I’ve held in my companies (especially since I have all of the “job stopper” areas tattooed). All this to say, you’re not alone, who you are is more than enough, your tattoos are unique and a beautiful expression of who you are, your feelings are valid, people will have their own projections (which may feel so personal especially as they may say things directly to us) but these projections have nothing to do with us. I hope in time you can invite some self-compassion and begin to heal the parts of yourself that need more attention and love. I’m still figuring this out 💚

smoothest transition lol I can see where you're coming from, this is partially why I never expose mine too much as I don't really have any friends that actually genuinely enjoy tattoos (none of them have any for example). And I avoid looking into them too much myself. I'm extremely OCD and if I do, I end up seeing nothing but flaws and how everything could have been done better. It's definitely amplified for you I imagine because your career is also kind of directly tied to them. For what it's worth I find your tattoos a lot more impressive then mine for example, though I think that's true for all of us, it feels like most people who actually enjoy and get tattoos for themselves are incredibly self conscious people to begin with :p

i got my first tattoo last week and found your channel searching for flaking. Saw a super helpful video of yours from a while back and thought id checkout the rest of your videos, and the next one is this. Now I'd like to point one thing out to you, and I feel this is pretty important - because you mentioned Instagram pictures and how your own tattoos compare. Keep in mind that instragram pictures often are taken under circumstances that make them look particularly good, and often heavily edited too. Its one of the reason why in some countries beauty Instagrammers by law have to flag their images are edited: because those close-to-ideal images create unrealistic views of how bodies, or in your case tattoos can look - nobody looks in real life like an Instagram image. You look great, and what I've seen so far from your tattoos looks great too. I saw your comment about what you wanted to say with the video, and I have another video suggestion for you to make - why not make one where you speak about the dangers of Instagram or the need many people feel nowadays comparing themselves to unreal images - I know there have been studies done on the psychology of that, and the research for such video could help you too whenever you feel the way you described here?
just a thought, ignore me if stupid.
    best regards,
    PP

Thanks for the honest video. I have some similar feelings. I have an amazing collection like you, but I still find myself questioning my choices when I see so much exceptional work being done.
I also tend to focus on the small imperfections in a piece and also the gaps or the way the tattoos connect rather than just admiring my new tattoo.
Also, I am self conscious in the office and wear jackets during important meetings.
Lastly, I’m really cautious about my tattoos fading so I’m always worried about being in the sun and can’t show them off. It’s annoying shaving all the time and applying sunscreen so they look the best.
Being exposed to so many great artists on social media kind of makes us lose sight on how amazing our tattoo journey has been.

You got the tattoos you have because they were the ones you wanted. You went through the pain of getting them so whoever doesn't like them can go FCUK themselves. They are your art on your body. When you looked in the mirror after the artist had finished I know for a fact you went to yourself that they were amazing. The art on your body has not changed and is still amazing, the world of tattoos has changed so much but what is now and what was when you had yours done means nothing.
My Friend, your tattoos are truly something else. The advice you give on this channel has changed my life with getting tattoos so much that I want to give something back to you if I can. Never ever give a DANM about what anyone says about how you look because a very wise person said this to me... People will always say something about you no matter how perfect you are so FCUK them and give them something to say about you. You are You and that is all that is important.

I think it's easy to see flaws/get bored of your tattoos compared to others because you see yours everyday. On Instagram you get that brief 5 minute "Wow that tattoo is insane", but with your tats instead of 5 minutes it's been 5+ years for some. That feeling fades fast. Your tattoos are incredible and are unique to you! Same could be said about your beard, sure other people got epic beards too but yours is also great! It's easy to be bored/used to something when it's with you everyday. But just because you're bored of it doesn't mean it's unappealing!

Dude, there is always going to be those people who feel they have the right to outwardly speak their opinion…. Especially if it is perceived that you are putting “it” out there…. To a lot of people as soon as someone puts themselves out there, it is looked upon as “fair game”. As a gay man, once I came out everyone knowing or hearing that thought they had the right to comment, express their opinion… most positive btw, but still seemed out there. It does beat up on a persons confidence a little bit…. But we are human and is natural to internalized things like this. For me words a friends said resonated with me as a mantra for a positive self love reminder, eventually had it tattooed on my chest so I could see it everyday… “Be your authentic self, Live your best Life”. As long as you are comfortable in the person you are, and even if you’re not…. The only opinion that really matters is yours. Be kind, love large… I really like your content. Thank you! 😊
