Installing Kali Linux in a VirtualBox on Windows: A Comprehensive Guide
This guide provides a detailed explanation of installing Kali Linux within a virtual machine using Oracle VirtualBox on a Windows system. While you won't find a step-by-step video walkthrough here, this text-based guide offers a clear and informative approach, allowing you to customize the installation to your preferences.
    Prerequisites:
A Windows computer with a working internet connection.
Administrator privileges on your Windows machine.
Oracle VirtualBox was downloaded and installed. You can find the latest version at www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downl....
A Kali Linux ISO file downloaded from the official Kali Linux website www.kali.org/get-kali/. Choose the 64-bit version unless you have a specific reason to use the 32-bit version.
    Understanding Virtualization
Virtualization software like VirtualBox allows you to create virtual machines (VMs) on your existing operating system. These VMs act like separate computers, each running its own operating system (Kali Linux in this case). This offers a safe and isolated environment to experiment with Kali Linux without affecting your main Windows system.
Downloading VirtualBox and Kali Linux ISO
Head to www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downl... and download the latest version of VirtualBox compatible with your Windows system.
Visit www.kali.org/get-kali/ and navigate to the "Downloads" section.
Under "Installer Images," choose the appropriate version for your needs. In most cases, the 64-bit image will be suitable. You can also download pre-configured virtual machines, but this guide focuses on creating a custom installation.
    Installing VirtualBox
Run the downloaded VirtualBox installer on your Windows machine.
Follow the on-screen instructions, accept the license agreement, and choose the installation components. The default options should work well for most users.
Once the installation is complete, launch Oracle VirtualBox from your Start menu.
    Creating a New Virtual Machine
Click the "New" button in the VirtualBox main window to create a new virtual machine.
In the "Name and operating system" window, provide a name for your VM. Something descriptive like "Kali-Linux-VM" is helpful.
Select "Linux" as the type and choose "Linux 64-bit" (or 32-bit if you downloaded the 32-bit ISO) for the version.
Click "Next" to proceed to the memory allocation stage.
Allocating Memory (RAM) for the Virtual Machine
A recommended base memory size will be displayed. This is the amount of RAM allocated to your virtual machine. While you can use the recommended value, it's advisable to adjust it based on your available system resources and desired performance for Kali Linux.
A good rule of thumb is to allocate 20-50% of your total system RAM to the VM. If you have 8GB of RAM, allocating 2GB-4GB for Kali Linux is a reasonable starting point. You can adjust this allocation later if needed.
    Click "Next" to continue.
    Configuring Virtual Hard Disk
In the "Hard disk" section, choose "Create a virtual hard disk now."
Select the "VDI" (VirtualBox Disk Image) hard disk type and click "Next."
You can choose between dynamically allocated or fixed-size storage. A dynamically allocated disk expands as needed, while a fixed-size disk allocates the entire storage space up front.
For most users, the default "Dynamically allocated" option is recommended. It offers flexibility and avoids wasting space initially.
Define the size of your virtual hard disk. The minimum recommended size for Kali Linux is 20GB, but allocating more space provides room for future installations and tools.
Click "Create" to finish creating the virtual machine.
    Configuring Virtual Machine Settings (Optional)
After creating the VM, you can optionally adjust its settings by right-clicking on the VM name in the VirtualBox list and selecting "Settings."
Explore the various settings tabs like "System," "Display," "Storage," and "Network" to fine-tune the virtual machine's behavior. Refer to the VirtualBox documentation for detailed information on each setting.
Starting the Virtual Machine and Installing Kali Linux
With your virtual machine created, select it in the VirtualBox list and click the "Start" button.
In the startup window, choose the downloaded Kali Linux ISO file you obtained earlier. You can use the "Optical Disk Selector" to browse and select the ISO file location.
Click "Start" to boot the virtual machine from the Kali Linux ISO.
