CN Train Breaks Two Knuckles in Brampton Ontario!

  • August 11, 2020: CN eastbound manifest train 484 passing through Brampton GO station goes into emergency after breaking a knuckle - and then a second knuckle breaks in front of our position as the train, full brakes applied, shudders over the diamond interlocking while coming to a stop. I called CN's emergency line to tell them about the knuckle (we could hear over the radio the crew didn't know why they'd gone into emergency yet). Video shot by Robin James Wynne.

    Good catch. I couldn’t quite catch the sound of the slack action rippling down the length of the train. Studies have shown that the leading edge of compression/tension wave speeds up and becomes more violent as it moves down the length of the train since the draw bars are mostly not damped. As the light tail end reflects the wave and the two waves travelling in opposite directions cross, a great deal of force is applied to the knuckles. This is more severe with long trains. If I recall, tri-levels have longer draw bars and are damped to protect the automobiles within, so I am a little surprised the train separated at that coupling.

    Right before the auto rack that disconnected comes into view, you can hear a loud bang. For anyone that doesn’t know, that was that cut of cars hitting the first cut.

    • @Henry5623
      @Henry5623 3 года назад +14

      That was the slack running out. The first knuckle likely towards the front of the train causing the lead cars of the second half to begin braking first. This bunched the slack up in the second half. Once the brakes were set the lightweight auto racks on the rear acted like an anchor trying to stop quicker then the heavier cars that could be seen leading them. This consequently caused the slack to be quickly pulled out of the second half, which you can easily hear and even see happening if you watch carefully. The sudden jerking of the slack violently being pulled out is what caused the second knuckle to break.

      You'd be correct with that. I'm wondering if the engineer might of bailed off on the independent brake to keep the slack tight in case there was a derailment and to prevent the any derailed railcars from jackknifing, or if the original air line separation was in the back which would naturally cause the back half to start braking harder than the front half?
      One of my friends used the independent brake trick once before when he noticed derailed cars on the ground behind him in combination with a small amount of train brake to safely bring his train to a stop without putting any cars into the ditch.

If they don’t bust a knuckle from the slack running in and back out they’ll catch an air hose coupling on a crossover or street pavement and big hole the train.. Always a shock when you’re rippin down track in run eight at 60 mph with everything going good on the greens then “BAMM” in emergency.!! That’s when it’s great to be the engineer especially in crappy weather since the conductor is the one to walk the train, repair the air hose and/or replace that knuckle.. Sometimes, we’ll have a brakeman on the train if we’re doing set outs and that extra person can help with the repairs. Otherwise, we’ll get dispatch to send out a repair crew if conditions or location is really really bad..Safety first ya know.. (BNSF Engineer, retired)

      Something to do with the length of the tunnel and the grade exiting either side. If you have too much weight on either head end or rear of the train, it can cause a broken knuckle. Most of the time it happens on the exit side while the is still a large portion of the train hanging out the other end due to the acceleration to climb the grade coming out of the tunnel.

      · Prevent damage to the track structure and equipment.

      So I believe how it works is the air pressure in the line holds back what are called “spring brakes.” When air pressure is lost, like a car disconnecting and breaking the air line, there is no longer any pressure on the springs, which activates the brakes. Glad I own a 4 wheel drive #Toyota_Tacoma.
    I can drive between the break and continue to the other side.
    Just a touch of "off roading" from what I can see there.
    Second time through viewing this.
    That "Break" has nothing to do with that crossing, but could affect car traffic somewhere else.

      Some railfans watch trains and videotape them daily, it's only natural that these sorts of things end up on video. The worst thing I ever caught was a Dash-9 spewing out smoke from everywhere in the hood. Nasty burnt electronics smell.

      Hmmmmm?, but those British "turnbuckle" couplers shouldnt give Sir Topham Hatt problems, right? My son in law worked for a local RR for a while, they were always breaking knuckles with loaded coal trains going uphill, but he was capable of toting 2 - 80 lb knuckles, big dude!

      The one I use for a doorstop weighs in at 78 pounds. It came off a 73 foot long loaded centerbeam car that snapped it's rear knuckle a few years ago. Had a internal fracture in the top half of the knuckle that was practically impossible to see but had been growing for years. The rust staining made it a dead give away where the fracture was since when the bottom let go you could see fresh metal and see just how little was actually holding the train together before it finally failed. Makes a good door stop. Just don't ever trip over it. Trust me it'll always win.
