I live in eastern Ohio and collect fossilized wood mostly Psronious....I probably didn't spell that right. It's a giant tree fern, my biggest piece is almost 300 lbs. I'd love to polish the base of it!
Really worthwhile! Polishing a large area for an amateur, amateur rockhounding is very difficult. My family had fun picking up “pretty rocks”, but they never got polished.
Had the polisher for about 24 hours now, one definitely take the water guard off helps it not catch on things and you can get it more level, I work with a lot of materials ordered the 11 plus disc pack it came with a 6000 grit which I'll use on obsidian and other touchy things so far man a good purchase considering a flat lap is a $1,000. little learning curve thank you very much
Great video as always! We brought home a lot of petrified wood from Arizona several weeks ago, and have been polishing pieces with the same sanding pads you featured. Love them!

I have used a Dremel tool with diamond burs and wet sandpaper in many grades . The most challenging thing I found to polish is amber ( my favourite)

Pyrite ball was the hardest (difficult) material i ever polished. Two spots at the poles of the sphere just will not polish to a shine. Very odd. Looks like a gold nugget. Also drilling pyrite is a tough one, being a crystal.
Thank y’all. Because of you I went out to the Blue Forest. I was able to find some good discarded chunks and a skinny middle finger sized piece after digging for a hour or two. You know, first time experience! I’ll be back 😂
I have been polishing stone for the last 33 years. Everything you say is true. I use each grit progressively longer. Your using a flexible back. If you use a hard back it will be much flatter. It is just harder to use. I like to use a hard felt buffer with aluminum oxide to finish sculpted uneven stone carvings. Not necessary on small flat pieces of stone. Pads put a better shine on flat surfaces than a pad. Weird water control/ shut off on that polisher. Nice work.

I have a petrified wood stump that's about 40lbs. I'm fine with keeping the sides rough for an interesting contrast but want the faces to be flat and polished. As of right now it's quite uneven on both faces, but it's a beautiful piece. I'm prepared to put in the effort to show off its true colors! How many pads do you think I'd go through to get a mirror finish on a truly gnarly chunk? Thanks in advance for your help. I enjoyed your informative & humorous tutorial. 😊
* Thanks for the tutorial. That is So much faster than tumbling and you don't lose so much of the stone. Michigan Rocks tumbles his until they are less than half what he started with.. But he is polishing the whole stone (all sides).. But for polishing slabs, you showed me a great way to do it myself.. Again, Thanks..

So awesome, Unfortunately here in Canada we can't legally polish or sell petrified wood because it's owned by the government...Canada has some funky fossil laws.

Well that's exactly how you make granite countertops... and same tools... but I don't have your lapidary saw so a angle grinder with a 7" continuous rim diamond blade works fine... a circular saw and water hose for DIY cutting whole slabs of granite

Why do you do all five instead of just jumping to the 3k? What does doing each polish do for the final product?
If you jump straight to 3k it would literally destroy the fabric of the universe..
