Tool Review VW Connector Release Tool from Schwaben. This is neat tool. I would say it is not something you MUST have in your tool box, but it makes a cool addition.
Do you have a tool you are looking to have an HONEST review on? Let me know via the comments, or email Charles(At)humblemechanic(dot)com - Авто/Мото
The bit where he shows you how to use the tool is at 6:00 mins for anyone who just wants to see that.
+Ian :)
Doing God’s work
@@HumbleMechanic🤣 ….but dude, your context, descriptions, explanations: priceless. You are a gem.
+HumbleMechanic If you're interested, I'll give some constructive feedback. First, a shorter video would be better. If you edit out everything before 5:15 and everything after 8:00, the video presents all the information that a person needs to know. Brevity is appreciated. Also, add the ECS link to the video itself, not the comments section. This makes it quicker/easier for viewers. Finally, I like that you used a mock-up to demonstrate how to use the tool. I also like that it was done in good lighting, with a sharply focused camera and with close ups. I also like that you demonstrated how to remove the connector without the tool. Overall, great job!
Just get to the point, 5.30 before we see tool in action.
THANK YOU! This is the only clear video of this goofy VW connection on RUclips!
AWEsome!!!!!
great vid, these connectors have been the bane of my fat thumbs and the "push it in first" tip has been a godsend
The tool looks awesome for where there's space. I can honestly say I've yet to fail opening these connectors simply by pushing the connector in (as if you're closing it) while using my thumb to press down on the rear tab and then pulling. It might take a couple of push and pulls, but it's always came off. EA113 TFSI coil packs being the perfect example. I see so many cars with the tabs smashed to bits because lazy buggers go yeehaw with a flat head.
Hey…I’m right here, and you’re just talking bad about me and my EA113 like that……🤣🤣
It wont break the locking tab because the tool can only pull the tab until the front most barb bottoms out on the square hole infront of the locking tab and it is that which takes the pulling strain, not the locking tab.
+Ian once the connectors get brittle is it possible to break them. I broke one a while back. It was a pretty beat connector anyway. It very well may have broke anyway.
the coil pack connectors for sue after 80K miles on an A4 2.0t , yup, always snap the first one release tab, cus ya pry UP like a dope until ya know it's push down, when ya don't do it all the time, ya forget! DUH plastic gets brittle after all that time and heat...until I got the feel, lucky though the locking tab still works, without the release part. plastic is forever only in teh oceans! As good as plastics are, , they still get brittle after lots of heat and time..amazing how so many hold up for a long long long time.
Ian the square hole can break causing the locking release to break on old brittle connectors.
I break these junk VW connectors all the time. I break more using this tool than just jamming a small flat head in them and twisting. Complete garbage design by VW. Just now I broke the primary O2 sensor connector with minimal effort trying to use this tool on these garbage connectors. I hate this about VW more than anything else, and that includes their garbage EPB designs.
Good video about the connector, good explanation of undoing the connectors and a handy tool to boot. Thanks!
Humble Mechanic The spring style connectors always just remove the spring if I'm having trouble getting them off. Makes life soooo much easier when the are stuck or just in a tight spot.
I have done the same thing and is indeed less frustrating
I like it! I might pick one up. Thanks Charles for another review!
Thank you for All your helpful videos, I APPRECIATE the time and effort you put into your Vids. you don't need to do these but Thank goodness you do. I recently referred your channel to my PORSCHE facebook groups. I was hoping someone could recommend a channel with even half of the detailed information you provide to the VW community's for so many years. But so far nobody does it a well as you. Your and your channel have been a major blessing to so many. I wish you had Vids on my 958 issues. I will alway check your channel out first anyway as many still relate, plus my 4 other Vdubs still need you. God Bless and your family and this Channel. Cheers Robert
Thanks for the tips you have discussed here.
How do your release the pins in the male pin side of the "D" connector? How to release the secondary locking clip "purple". The female side is easy, it just slides out.
i gotta say i have almost NEVER come across this style VW connectors that opens the correct way. That may Also be because im in Central NY. i Usally just put a small pick through the back side and lift up the lock off the tab and then pull them apart, works and never damages .
Thanks! I've already broken a tab for one of those connectors. They get so brittle after a while. I think this tool will help me with future work.
The connector you have there looks new. How does this tool work on old, brittle, gunky contractors? That would be a real life test.
It’s still a gamble.
Your video really helped me out. Thank You!
Awesome. Glad I could help. :)
Can you post the website for this tool? Thanks...
Interesting, i think i might have to pick one of these up.
Cool. I think you'll dig it
audi factory manual states that you need this tool to disconnect the reverse sensor connector on 0B4 transmission on the b8/b8.5 s4/s5, the space is too cramped to do by hand
that guy can talk
Thanks for this information. I have just ordered this tool. I need to remove the connector at the back of the alternator that I'm replacing and nothing I have tried so far works. Since the connector has been in place for 23 years, I'm being very careful with it. Fingers crossed.
Follow up: Hasn't worked yet. Spraying the connector w/ WD-40 hoping that will loosen it up. At this point, odds are 50/50 I'll break the connector and have to replace it. I can see that the tool works great on new connectors in plain site. Hard to reach old connectors, not so much.
Dang…these plugs have always been a nightmare to discount by hand. I just ordered this tool, will let you know how it works out.
hi, can u give me the measurments? i will make my own! :)
I bought one and it sure as hell didn’t undo my coils that easily. Most might cringe but I was able to change plugs without disconnecting my harness. I had slack in the harness and the rubber boots once you unseat the coil is flexible. I was able to lift the coil and slowly bend out the boot from the cylinder head. I was able to do this one coil at a time and swap Plugs and reinstall without issue. Not sure if anyone else has done this.
Just be careful. Those wires get brittle. It does work on some cars, some not.
i've ordered mine today
What is the part number for the tool
Hi ! Good idea !
Do you remember which connector (reference) you used ? I need to know the male one because and I did not find it at my VW store.
Many thanks if you can answer me !
This is a mk5 fan connector
YEAHH I found the vw reference for the male connector thanks to you !
Here is the link to the tool. It is on sale!!!

Does anyone make an aftermarket D connector that is not as fragile or made from amore heat resistant material?
These breaking seems so common, especially on coil packs - I would think there is a demand for something like this.
God only knows how many connectors I have broken. I think I'll get one of these.
I have this tool and its still difficult to open the connectors. I dont think this tool is that helpful.
Thanks, I'll knock a tool up with the angle grinder.
Do you do OLD LEXUS Connectors: EX: 95 LEXUS SC400. I have a 6 terminal connector in the door well,( D10/D11 GREY) that connects DOOR LOCCK MOTOR, DOOR UNLUCK SW, DOOR UNLOCK SWITCH. I am chewing the thing apart and would like to buy a genuine one to practice on. I'm a novive at this wiring stuff, yet I have all the BODY ELECTRICAL Information and the wiring diagrams. MAybe I could buy a door lock motor, and receive the connector for free. Just want to practice on a connector though.
Go to the junkyard and practice on those. Then if they break, not a huge deal
Tell me again what you think about the tool...................
it's a cool tool
What should have been a 1 minute video turns into an 11 minute video with more back story than an episode of pop idol......still thx for video anyway - i've been looking for a tool like this as some connectors are a nightmare to get to and when stuck you can't angle a screw driver onto the release. Any car that's got more than a few years on it will have plenty of stuck connectors.
Best tip he had was to PUSH connector together pull locking tab back then pull connector off. As he said this tool won't work in some places with very little clearance (actually many places) but as I stated push in pull tab pull connector works best (no tool needed)
Its nice, but we need an extra long one for those hard to reach areas. Temp sensor connector on TSI anyone?
Ooo luck!, One kind person was found... The case is banal, but if you don't know where to click, you can ruin a lot of nerves and the connector, too.
This dragged on and on and on! 2 min this should of been
Yoda?
Agree, way too much talking
You may want to consider making your videos a bit more succinct.
+Brett Davis I think that I've done that. This was one of my first review videos.
vWtf thanks for the 00:06:00 TC. AT THIS RATE JUST GO AHEAD AND GIVE US THE CHEMICAL COMPOSITION OF THE CLIP PLASTIC AND ALCHEMY OF THE WIRES AND THEIR LOSS IN RESISTANCE PER FOOT AT VARIANT TEMPERATURES... im just saying!
For the next one for sure!
I thought he was going to talk the connector apart..!!!
thanks for that.😊
about 10min too long, but goo info.
Just get the point, please!
draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaging...........
Long speech bro :)
Oh yea
I've broken about half the connectors I've attempted to use this tool on. Quite a few cannot use this tool at all because the direction connectors face when attached to hard parts in the engine due to other obstructing parts. Pushing the thumb tab on these connectors never, never works. You have much better luck just prying it apart with a flat head. This design by VW is complete garbage.
works (almost) every time for me. just need some wiggling sometimes.
Electrical connectors are designed by chumps. Too bad they can't get some kids from MIT to brain up a clever, ergonomic, reliable, secure design that easily disconnects with just the fingers.. to be used across the entire auto industry. In my case, stuck with the work of Detroit blockheads as it is, having to first unbolt the CKP sensor from its very cramped position to get the connector off. All I want to do is check for corrosion and reseat it. Blockheads.
Прикольно
To anyone watching this video.. to see the tool actually in use... Go to time mark 6:10. The rest of the video is completely useless and he actually uses his hand more than the tool. I think he only used the tool once in this video.
This needs to be redone. Waste of my life watching this video.
Okay.
Yeah, I got it, it's only 15 bucks!
What a waste of time! Haven't you got nails on your fingers?
Sometimes. But I bite my nails so sometimes not.
Fkng 10 minutes video for disconecting a plug which takes 2 seconds.
Until it doesn’t. Or I guess if you always break them. Lol ;)
Как можно 11 минут рассказывать про эту маленькую хрень?
Too much explanation for a simple tool!
bla bla bla 11 min to tell nothing
That could have taken 30 seconds instead of 11:16....
Nah.
