It's such a privilege to have access to these information as Lea herself rarely ever speaks about her ancestry in her interviews. Finding out about her grandparents made me tear up a little bit.
Wow what an amazing story. Great job Finding your Roots!! Hoping my "FLORES" family would have that chance to find our roots too, hehehe. Salute to the researchers.
This is the first time I heard Lea talk about her father. She rarely mentions him during her interviews since she’s a child. Only time she mentioned him was during a British interview of her during miss Saigon
I never could've imagined in a million years that Lea Salonga has a German ancestry. She looks so Asian. She doesn't even look like a Latino like many Filipinos. WOW!
Wow! It's really a special feeling to know more of our roots. I mean, I know my grandpa and grandma but no info about my greats so much more with the double great, great. Nice content.
Im not surprised lea has european ancestors kasi aside from spanish madame din naman talagang european na nag stay dito kasi maganda at progressive ang pilipinas noon. It was a place they can start dream before. Im happy for her.
I hope they dive deeper in future episodes, because I know “FYR” saves a lot on the cut room floor for other thematic episodes. That’s why you get multiple episodes with similar guests and different match ups. It would be nice to dive into Lea’s paternal side as the Salongas are “mappiang sugui” which are Kapampangan royalty. Those families include Macapagal, Pangilinan, Tayag, Umali, de Tagle Perez, etc. This is why Lea is distantly related to Enrique Iglesias, on his mother’s side. These families were tax exempted by the Spanish because they acted as colonial emissaries. They’re so interconnected to other SE Asian royal families which means she’s distantly related to the Bolkiahs of Brunei.
My grandfather is an Alcantara, hailed from Balut Tondo Manila. I wonder if we are related to the grandmothet of Lea who is also an Alcantara from Sampaloc Manila? Geez. Exciting 😊
My grandmother, an elementary student, adopted by an American army officer was imprisoned in U.S.T. with her American adopted family. Even children were put in prison during those days.
This is HOW *Filipino Americans* OR ANY *Westernized Filipinos* should speak in English or Filipino English. Get your Filipino words pronounced *correctly* with correct accent even when in an English sentence!! Don't make it a "clowned" version just like what Kris Aquino is doing!
12:55 the Filipinos WERE NOT subjected to the words you mentioned. Gen Homma orders is to respect the locals probably to earn the trust and less headache to manage aside with the Americans and other westeners. My Mom and Dad went through this war but they never got arrested nor tortured. The first wave were the Professional Soldiers from Japan the Yamatos who respected the locals, the second wave were conscripts from Formosa, Korean Pensinsula and China who were harsh with the locals.
Your parent's experience does not invalidate what other Filipinos had experienced in that occupation. The Rape of Manila still happened, the Bataan Death March still happened, the Rapes of Comfort Women still happened, the Moro conflict still happened, hunger still happened.
What happened to the locals at the time also depended a lot on the Japanese leaders' and their men's characters who were in command of certain places. That's why there were Filipinos in some places who said they were treated kindly by the Japanese while there were Filipinos in other places who said that they were treated brutally.
Unfortunately, your grandparents better experience do not necessarily reflect the most of the filipino’s cruel experience under the japanese occupation. Despite the good intentions of some leaders, not all japanese act the same way like robots because they are not. This can also be reflected with Ferdinand Marcos, where i believe he gets all the blame for the killings although this is not necessarily his directive during martial law. In todays situation, you will all leaders who are obviously corrupt while others remain true to their public service.

Sadly, it's rare in the Philippines to know your deep ancestral roots most only know the history up until their great grand parents. Those who know maybe were the rich and prominent ones or those who came from family of national heroes, most ordinary Filipinos, especially the earlier generation didn't care to pass down Family History unlike other Asians whose family ancestry is well chronicled.
Hahaha

Not many Filipinos look like Latinos. Even those who have European/non-Asian ancestors look more Asian because Asian genes are just so strong.

My super Lea!

I wonder how the rumors started that Lea's mom was from Pulupandan, Negros Occidental when they were really from Bulacan before?
WoW this is amazing !
really impressed with the research team
Ang galing nman ng nag researh
Filipinos are so unique
My grandmother, an elementary student, adopted by an American army officer was imprisoned in U.S.T. with her American adopted family. Even children were put in prison during those days.

Wow ,, I like to my roots
Yung batang may flower sa hair hawig ni Lea nung ganyan rin edaran niya🥹
Kaso sa US lang may facilities na ancestry tracing. Sa Philippines lang kwento kwento sino mga ancestors natin.
Meron din, somewhere in the Natl Library... Just know the birthday of your grandparents... Or the Latter Day Saints in Cubao have a list from 1800s
“At that time, Philippines were an American Protectorate” -were an American Territory right?
How are her great great grandparents have a Spanish name if they are German.
As mentioned in the video, it was a translated name. They assumed Enrique was Heinrich, a common German name.
Sa motherside ni Lea ang dugong german.pero malayong malayo na

Filipino thing to get money? Ganun ba kadali sumikat pag Pinoy lalo sa America? Is that what you mean?😄
