I took my 7-year-old daughter to live theatre at the Cultural Center of the Philippines to watch "Annie" the musicale, featuring Lea Salonga. After the show, unbeknownst to my companions and me, my daughter already made it to the baclstage to ask for Lea's autograph. I ran to catch up with my daughter. What I saw was 9-year-old Lea at the end of her prayer, kissed the crucifix of her rosary while uttering her gratitude to God. She then quickly took my daughter's CD and signed it to my daughter's delight. We thanked her and she thanked us for watching the show! A sweet, sprightly soul.
Lea Salonga is one of the few people in the world who is considered Pitch Perfect, the only singer who got to be the singing voice of 2 Disney princesses and the first Asian to win the Tony award best actress in a musical so, comparing her to other singers like Regine or Mori is an insult. They didnt even come close to Lea...she is the best and she was never off-key or had a bad performance..
How many genre does Lea can sing ? I am not a music expert but I just base my thinking on so many Vocal Coaches’ opinion on Regine or Morissette talent or some other singers
I first saw Lea at the Meralco Theatre during my first of three foreign service assignments to Manila between 1983 and 1987 when she was the lead in Annie and I was certain that with a few good breaks she would become a super star she was that good. I was there on my second assignment from 1990 - 95 when I had an brief e-mail exchange with her helping to get her Mac connected to the Internet. Then in the late 90s I was able to see her perform in Miss Saigon in New York. Quite an amazing career.
Who would not admire Lea Salonga? Great singers emerge but who does her breathing techniques? She's just unmatched (in the Philippines, of course), at least as of this comment. Thank you, Sirs, for devoting a part of an episode for our nation's Lea Salonga. Her enunciation is another thing. "On My Own," from Act 2 of Les Miserables, is one of my favorites among her broadway song renditions. I could literally jot down the lyrics while listening to it. Check that out, too, if you have the time, Sirs. Notice the emotional integrity; awesome!
Thankyou for always featuring Philippine Artists. What I love about the Philippines is how easy collaborations happen among artists. They have this camaraderie that so commendable, that we don't see much from other artists like in the West.
That is so true. Regine is the biggest star there is but you can find numerous videos of her collaborating with lesser known artists. It's very common to see singers doing duets while waiting to perform. There's no ego involved or talent fee: they just love their craft.
Lea's English accent is the common accent for those people in the Philippines who came from a well-educated and upper class family. Lea is different from the common celebrities in the country because she started from theater and she was studying medicine before she decided to pursue her Broadway career. She's very smart in both arts and academics. What's more amazing is that she's got great personality and great sense of humor too. ...and she's a good dancer too!
@@lizzzzl I’ll have to disagree with what you said about Lea’s accent. She’s just very good with mimicking accents-I’ve heard her do the queen’s english, cockney, Scottish, and Irish
No. We don't speak like this, until like Lea who spent a year or so abroad -- note that Monique Wilson and most if not all of the other Filipino cast who performed in Miss Saigon everywhere on the planet never spoke like this or blatantly adopted the native accent of the host country. Lea spoke like an American after a year in Broadway. This isn't a dig against her, just clearing up a misconception about Filipinos.
There are two singers who really hit me hard and get my waterworks running: my all-time favorite Morissette and Lea Salonga, the queen of Broadway. Through her I discovered Morissette. Lea is so outstanding. She has so much more to offer. Please check out her renditions of "Too much for one heart" and "Via Dolorosa". Thank you, and greetings from Europe.
I had the great privilege to see Lea perform on Broadway in Here Lies Love last summer. After the show I had the honor to meet her and have a brief conversation. She was so gracious posing for pictures and signing autographs for all. And she is a flawless beauty also.
Lea did an online concert as a fundraiser for Bayanihan Musikahan early on during the pandemic (4/2/20). She sings the first musical phrase of “Human Heart” a cappella (same way she did on Broadway) and says, “God, I hope I’m in the right key.” (Pause) “And if I’m not, that’s okay, too.” She sings the rest of the intro a cappella and then hits play on her background track. Of course she was perfectly on pitch.
Thank you so much Throga! Mind blowing! Wow! Every single note is perfect for Lea S. “Too Much For One Heart” really made me cry! Undeniable one of a kind Disney Princess and a Broadway Legend! 👏👏
Please check on her LIVE performances of 1. A Whole New World with her original partner Brad Kane as Aladdin 2 decades later 2. Mulan 3. Via Dolorosa 4. Performances with Il Divo (Memory, Time To Say Goodbye, Music of the Night)
This live was blocked due to the Regine / Lea Medley at the end. Lea was INCREDIBLE in Miss Saigon!! Her vocals are always so clear and beautiful!! I first heard her sing in Miss Saigon and honestly its my favorite version ever…also I had the privilege of watching her perform on stage in Les Miserables and she was FANTASTIC!! 🎶❤️✌🏻
I love that you focused on Lea and covered a range of her career from 9 to 49! There is still a lot to watch! You mentioned wanting to hear another performance of Lea’s as a kid. She was the guest at the concert of Kuh Ledesma in 1980 when Lea was 9. I think Kuh was 25 and it was her first big solo concert.
she only lives in the Philippines but she’s in London for months for Miss Saigon and she’s very young so she adopted the accent…Her American accent return when she comes back home in PH.
A great chance to see the change in her voice and skill is to watch a video posted here on yt of Lea And Brad, singing A Whole New World, back in the 90s and then 25 yrs later. The performances are shown back to back so you can really see how much and how little has changed with both singers.
Love the way you give tribute reaction for the one and only LEA SALONGA. For future reactions of her, you could try her version of Defying Gravity, Let it Go, Reflection (Disney Legend)+ her Acceptance Speech, On My Own (Remastered Version), Tomorrow (Globe). ❤
Lea and Jona are my two favorites. Lea is pitch perfect, Jona’s soft tones and belts are both beautiful. Jona Viray sings with so much emotion and passion.
Thank you so much for 90 minutes on Lea Salonga ❤ I am especially happy you did “Still Hurting.” You must be only the second or third channel out of the dozens I’ve scoured who have reacted to it. ❤ For a future Filipino Friday, you will enjoy Lea and Brad Kane as kids recording A Whole New World, and then both of them singing it again 20 years later. ❤You will also melt at the sweetness of her voice when she sings I do (Two Words) at her wedding. ❤❤
I was so late. But I had fun as usual the back to back banterings and still learn a lot. Regine is just a year older than Lea. She was asked to audition for Miss Saigon but felt it is not for her while Lea been performing in plays since she was young. Many Filipino artists were cast together with Lea in the first batch.
Thank you for featuring Lea. She is one of the Philippine treasures. Thank you for your views and reactions. Could you cover Lea's collab with Pentatonix on the original Filipino song Christmas In Our Hearts? The backstory of this song and collab is also very interesting. Maybe in time for the Christmas season (which in the Philippines starts in September).
Just in case people aren’t aware: the song Via Dolorosa has English and Spanish verses. I don’t think there is a version that’s fully English or fully Spanish. But I will also add - it’s a GORGEOUS performance, one I always recommend to people who aren’t aware of Lea’s talent. :)
I saw Lea in Miss Saigon with the original London cast in June 1990 right after I graduated high school. I was awestruck. I was obsessed with this musical and I listened to this soundtrack so much that 34 years later, as I sat here watching this, I was able to sing along with Lea and didn’t forget a single word of that song. Anyway, I actually came here to say, where is your reaction to Jimin’s new song, Who?
Ms. Leah Salonga is just such an elegant performer. She has a certain grace about her. The 18year old Leah is so eloquent. She answered those questions intelligently. I mean when I was 18 I did not talk like that. Hahaha…
I started crying immediately once. I heard the begining of i will giive my life for you. I remember seeing the show for the first time on stage,. SHE Sang the song the gunshot rings out😂. Chris starts screaming. Why and I screamed back to the stage. What do you mean why you a******
You're probably more likely to see her perform in US. She's headlining in Sondheim's Old Friends with Bernadette Peters for the 2024-25 Broadway Season. THAT'S a dream to witness 😭
I saw STEPHEN SONDHEIM'S OLD FRIENDS in London a few times and it was absolutely incredible! I know that the cast will be difference (except for Lea and Bernadette), but I'm sure it will be fantastic!
That second video was a scene in Miss Saigon on its original run in Druly Lane. So she was still 18 here. She was singing this for her little son who she decided to give away so he'll be safer, knowing that Vietnamese soldiers will take him away . The son's father is an American soldier that's why the Viets are targetting her & the child since the Vietnamese hated America/ Americans. Lea won the Sir Laurence Olivier Award as Best Actress in the musical in this original run or i meant, the first run of Miss Saigon.
She code switched to an English accent for the sake of clarity and relatability. Its a skill many of those who simultaneously live in different cultures have (even if the language is the same).
Lea paid for her brothers music education. She joked about it in an interview and called it "a return on investment" in reference to him being the conductor for her concerts.
Glad to see Lea singing "Still Hurting" included in today's line up. Hope you can include her singing the song "Alone" in 19 East, Sucat in the next episode.
Yeah, Lea Salonga is destined to be a theater star at an early stage. The international search for Kim in "Miss Saigon" was clearly fated for her. It was truly the Philippines' pride as she put our country in the international Broadway stage. She has maintained her world-class stature as an international star till the present time doing performances abroad.
I'm an uber fan of Lea's. Some random info: --Lea was in the premiere production of ANNIE in the Philippines (1980) when she was 9. ANNIE opened on Broadway in 1977 and the film came out in 1982. This was her 2nd theatrical job, and her 1st lead. --If you want to see more of young Lea - she was the guest of Kuh Ledesma (another Filipina singer - I think about 16 years older than Lea) and I think it was Kuh's first major concert - also 1980. There are various clips from Lea's sections where she sings and also has stage banter with Kuh. --The Human Heart rehearsal - Lea isn't even mic'ed! --I love that you wanted to watch Lea's videos in chronological order! I made a list of all the Lea reactions you've done (here and past Filipino Fridays). In future comments I will try to suggest other vids that fill in years you haven't seen yet. Also, I love that you're willing to watch some rarer videos and interviews!
Her rendition of Still Hurting is soooo full of emotions. I first heard it from Anna Kendrick and love that version but when I stumbled upon Lea's, it's waaaaay waaaaaay better. 💕💕💕
I know Lea wasn’t Pocahontas in the movie, but I actually like her performance of Colors of the Wind the best out of the three Disney songs. It really fits her voice perfectly. I wonder if she was in contention for that role too… Also her duet with Michael Ball is the best rendition of that song EVER!
I first heard if Lea Salonga while I was living in California and I was amaze of her voice. As a Filipino I wanted to show my support to a fellow countrymen. I saw her in Miss Saigon in Los Angeles in 1989. Now that I lived back in the Philippines 🇵🇭 I still continue listening to her amazing voice. Thanks for featuring her in your show.
I've lost track of how many times I've watched this video. I so appreciate how much you appreciate Lea's talent. I have nothing against other singers that hit crazy high notes and/or do riffs and runs. Those can be very exciting and beautiful, too. But I don't think I could listen to that non-stop. I can listen to Lea non-stop. I may have noted this before, but Lea is the only person that was part of the LES MIZ 10th anniversary and 25th anniversary concerts in different roles (Eponine and Fantine). That's pretty impressive! Most people feel her "On My Own" is the gold standard. And Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain" always moves me.
Rewatching this video AGAIN. Another thing I always note: plenty of non-musicians love Lea. It isn't possible to not be moved her striking performances - especially of musical theater songs. And just about everyone clocks Lea as having a perfect Disney voice - even if they don't realize she is already a Disney princess twice over. But I especially love when musicians appreciate Lea's talent. She doesn't do vocal acrobatics, so some people may not find her vocals very impressive - but they really are. The average singer/person can't do what Mariah Carey does, but they also can't do what Lea does either!
I REALLY encourage you to watch Lea in OLD FRIENDS. It’s going to be in Broadway in January 2025 for a limited time. I promise you, you’ll see her in a different light singing Sondheim songs. Have you reviewed Nicole Scherzinger (who is half Filipino) she has great vocals as well. I believe she will be in Broadway too for Sunset Boulevard. If you get the chance, do a reaction vid on her singing Memory she played Grizabella in the West End and her singing Phantom of the Opera. She is amazing versatile singer.
Love your video guys. First time watching your vid and just, thank you. Pleaseee, like pretty please you need to see her Broadway Concert back in 2002 the selection of songs on that concert is top tier also her other concert. Also, pleaseeeee you must watch Miss Lea's cover of "You Must Love Me" absolutely beautiful and my fave. Thank you and blessed day to you two.
Maybe you can also react to Regine's duet with Baywatch actor David Hasselhoff of their song More Than Words Can Say and her duet with Paul Anka of their song It's Hard To Say Goodbye.
Morisette, katrina velarde,Regine velasquez and a lot of filipino singers have great voices but Lea's voice is world class that set her apart from the rest.❤
@@rcj7299 I agree. I love Lea too. But Queen Regine is something else too. Her voice captivated so many hearts and even the great singers of this modern times were inspired by her. 😊
Lea Salonga is one of the few peoplenin the world whonis considered as Pitch Perfect, the only singer who got to be the singing voice of 2 Disney princesses and the first Asian to win the Tony award best actress so comparing her to other singers like Regine or Mori is an insult. They didnt even come close to Lea
I think someone made a compilation of comparing Lea to original Disney performers. That would be a great one to watch. One more recent performance that isn’t part of that compilation is Lea singing How Far I’ll Go from Moana. (Gorgeous) You could do another full show on Lea with just her duets and group collabs! Lea/Josh Groban singing All I Ask of You (Phantom of the Opera) and The Prayer, Lea/Liz Callaway singing I Still Believe, Lea/Simon Bowman (original costar in MISS SAIGON) singing Sun and Moon and The Last Night of the World, Lea/Brad Kane singing A Whole New World (1992 and 2015) and We Could Be In Love, Lea/Rachelle Ann Go singing I Know Him So Well, Lea/Pentonix singing Christmas in Our Hearts, Lea/Robi Rosa (a member of Menudo) singing Separate Lives, Lea/Regine Velasquez Alcasid/Sarah Geronimo singing a Streisand medley, Lea/Il Divo singing Memory, Music of the Night, Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Time To Say Goodbye.
Only partway through this video but I have to say - I’m loving it!!! There are so many more Lea videos that I hope you’ll watch! I also wanted to add some comments: -“A Little Fall of Rain” was from the 10th anniversary LES MIZ concert in 1995. Not sure why you saw it as 2010 except that might be when it the video was uploaded. -Lea and her brother hosted a TV show called “Love, Lea” when she was 12-14. Gerard is 2.5 years younger than Lea. -Lea will often mimic accents of people around her. You can see it in various interviews she has done over the years. When speaking with American reporters/hosts, she sounds American. Here she sounds British (but she had also been living and working in London doing the musical). In the Philippines, she mostly speaks English in her interviews but her Filipino accent is sometimes stronger than other times. I think it is usually goes with whether the person interviewing her has a strong accent or is speaking in Tagalog (Filipino).
I'm not sure if anyone has made this correction.....Lea Salonga came with the West End cast to open the show on Broadway! The two leads were Jonathan Price (won the Tony Award) and Lea!
The only people from the original West End production of MISS SAIGON that went to Broadway were Lea and Jonathan Pryce. The rest of the Broadway cast was totally new.
@@jasonbroad5478 And the producers wouldn't have paid for that entire cast to go to Broadway either. The people they specifically wanted to bring over were Jonathan Pryce and Lea. (There were difficulties around getting them both.) They both won the Olivier and Tony Awards. But Hinton Battle (the original John on Broadway) also won a Tony Award, may he rest in peace.
A morning with you two and chat people is always good but very special with Lea. Thank you. I have recently been down the rabbit hole with Jacob Collier. He has a brilliant and in many ways unusual musical mind. He's won 5 Grammys of 7 nominations. If you are interested in an inteoduction video you could try Jacob at MIT. I'm not sure he will ever get a day on Throga but I think he may interest both of you. A suggestion only!
Great time of reaction day again with you two...❤❤❤ I would want to hear and see both your reaction to Leah Salonga... when she was carried by Darren Criss and made her sing "On My Own" on a night Bar unrehearsed. 🙏 Thanks🎉

Lea paid for her brothers music education. She joked about it in an interview and called it "a return on investment" in reference to him being the conductor for her concerts.
Two words, Lea sang the song during their wedding vows.
She's a legend ..crystal clear voice...Try watching her "Too Much for One Heart"❤️
Glad to see Lea singing "Still Hurting" included in today's line up. Hope you can include her singing the song "Alone" in 19 East, Sucat in the next episode.
One of my favorites. No one sings it like her
Check out Lea Salonga singing Two Words while she walks down the aisle
She is a treasure of theater of all time.
Some random info:
--Lea was in the premiere production of ANNIE in the Philippines (1980) when she was 9.
Please react to Lea singing Via Dolorosa with the choir. Thank you!
Her rendition of Still Hurting is soooo full of emotions. I first heard it from Anna Kendrick and love that version but when I stumbled upon Lea's, it's waaaaay waaaaaay better. 💕💕💕
I've always been amazed that a non native English singer has the best pronunciation/enunciation of all singers I've ever heard.
Loved your interaction and the very informative and professional review…keep it up guys….😊
I know Lea wasn’t Pocahontas in the movie, but I actually like her performance of Colors of the Wind the best out of the three Disney songs. It really fits her voice perfectly. I wonder if she was in contention for that role too…
Also her duet with Michael Ball is the best rendition of that song EVER!
The average singer/person can't do what Mariah Carey does, but they also can't do what Lea does either!
wow didnt know u guys know Lea, she’s one of my fav. too, her voice has a life, always touch my heart🥲
She was born rich and very influential family. Good thing she listened to her strict parents. Look at her now, very successful.
That's not true.
Lea Salonga graduated Valedictorian in high school so what can you expect but a very intellectual conversation from her.
If i remember correctly, Lea was the one who sent Gerard to Brent school of music and she joked that it was so expensive
It's Berklee College of Music in Boston where he graduated Summa Cum Laude. You are right. It was expensive.
Thank you so much for loving the Filipino talents..God bless you more❤️
YES YOUR RIGHT IT'S A BRITISH ACCENT BECAUSE SHE LIVES IN LONDON FOR AWHILE AND SHE'S IN A GOOD AND RICH FAMILY BACKGROUND.
Love your video guys. First time watching your vid and just, thank you. Pleaseee, like pretty please you need to see her Broadway Concert back in 2002 the selection of songs on that concert is top tier also her other concert. Also, pleaseeeee you must watch Miss Lea's cover of
"You Must Love Me" absolutely beautiful and my fave.
We love Lea, but regine is her own. Lea even called her a "freak of nature" due to her greatness! ;)
@@rcj7299 I agree. I love Lea too. But Queen Regine is something else too. Her voice captivated so many hearts and even the great singers of this modern times were inspired by her. 😊
wag ka ng magbanggit banggit ng ibang pangalan accla jusko! kahiya ka
Dude. The other singers you mentioned are also world class. What are you trying to say
Gerard Salonga did the arrangement for that Regine-Martin Musical Medley you previously reacted to✨
I think someone made a compilation of comparing Lea to original Disney performers. That would be a great one to watch. One more recent performance that isn’t part of that compilation is Lea singing How Far I’ll Go from Moana. (Gorgeous)
You could do another full show on Lea with just her duets and group collabs!
Have listened to most of those mentioned above...just adored her more with her superb talent and awesome voice.
For the holidys, check out Lea with the Pentatonix... It is nice even if you'll feature this on your show. Thanks again
Colors of the Wind... such a beautiful beautiful song. And I LOOOVE the way Lea sang it.
She is gifted and genius artis
Lea is the best ❤
I still think that she has the most beautiful voice in the world.
Wish you could do a reaction also of Lea with Il Divo. She went with them during their World Tour.
She's the best singer.
Only partway through this video but I have to say - I’m loving it!!! There are so many more Lea videos that I hope you’ll watch! I also wanted to add some comments:
-“A Little Fall of Rain” was from the 10th anniversary LES MIZ concert in 1995.
We all love Lea the best👏👏👏👏👏😍😍😍😍😍
A few times a year i binge watch on lea
Lea, Regine and Sarah did a Barbra S medley together.
Lea and Simon Bowman's duet 5 years ago, of Sun and Moon and Last night of the world, please...
@@meredithchandler73 Yea, I should have been clearer. Equity wouldn’t let an entire cast move from London to the US.
@@meredithchandler73 Yes, Hinton was as gifted a dancer (performer) as there ever was. RIP
Lea Salonga singing Ave Maria on it's showtime and The Prayer on the voice of the Philippines
GOAT
Lea is known as perfect-pitched voice artist.
the way she talks.. very cutesy.. very mindful.. very demure.. :)
Great time of reaction day again with you two...❤❤❤
I would want to hear and see both your reaction to Leah Salonga... when she was carried by Darren Criss and made her sing "On My Own" on a night Bar unrehearsed.
🙏 Thanks🎉
shes no.1 in asia..
Thats a quality of a Filipina graceful gentle and kind
