That was the first time in the contest that Kevin beatboxed, because it would have given it away immediately (as if Scott's voice didn't in the very first song they sang). This was being aired during their recent world tour, and was clearly filmed in advance. It's obviouse that they knew this would be California Roll's final performance, hence the beatboxing. My guess is that they told the show in advance how many performances they could give before leaving town, thereby arranging in advance when they would "lose."
As famous as they are, there is still a large segment of the general population that has never even heard of them. Fans obviously knew immediately who it was, but if you had never delved into their music...
It's frustrating when I talk about them irl and there are still people that never heard of them LOL. But at least I get to introduce them to more people.
This is from this past season of The Masked Singer. The judges have guessed PTX for probably 2-3 seasons now since a couple of contestants have done a group instead of just 1 singer. I would say by the 2nd episode that they were on, I was probably 95% sure it was PTX because you could ear Scott's voice, and Kirsten and Mitch's voices put it together for me. When Kevin started beatboxing in the one song, I was 100% positive it was PTX because no other group can do everything they can. When someone gets unmasked on this show, they let them sing a going away song. I would say 99% of the time, the people who are unmasked get about 15-20 seconds to sing, and then they cut away to go to commercials/the next tv program. When PTX was unmasked they got around a full minute to sing which I have never seen happen on the show.
You hit the nail on the head…they are ALL so amazingly talented individually, BUT when they come together as Pentatonix they move to another level that is electrifieing❤
I'm glad you viewed this one because it IS so much more than just the song - the thing about Pentatonix is, you don't just 'listen' to their music ... you 'experience' their music through the vibrations of sound and their energetic performances! If you have listened to Hallelujah (the video) then you understand what I mean about the 'vibrations' because you can feel so much in your chest and head as they sing - hands down the most unique and amazing group I have ever had the pleasure to follow - I am really enjoying your reactions!
You may also love watching their journey on "The Sing Off." You get to hear more about them forming the group (spoiler, they met and rehearsed with Kevin the day before auditions). It was season 3 and all 12 performances are available. You can see how great they were from day 1 and how they progressed through the competition. Fantastic reaction to the Masked Singer performances. If you are on the west or plan to travel, you can sign up for the notifications. I attended a 7 hour taping of a season finale of Masked Singer. It's a faced paced taping thst flew by. Highly recommend!!!
What i loved about this is that in a way it gave them an opportunity to move into instrumentation without giving up their harmonic gymnastics. Im excited for their future.
Most of us Pentaholics knew from the initial clue package before we even heard them sing. Then, the moment Scott opened his mouth, it was obvious. This took place in April/May of this year, so recent.
Glad you decided to do the whole thing❤ they got "third" but it felt really forced and even the panel were pretty shocked 😂 Scott promised that they would do a few of these songs on the Summer tour 🤞
"I wish I had watched 5his show because I feel like I'm in a concert and it's absolutely awesome." Oh boy, just wait until you actually start watching all the Sing Off episodes (at least for season 3 when PTX won). There were a ton of great groups that year! Dartmouth Aires, Delilah, Filharmonic and so many others...
I know what you mean about not wanting it to end, but to be honest I feel exactly that so many times with Pentatonix. This was a lovely reaction, from beginning to end. You’re right, being able to see their faces adds so much to the emotion of the songs. It’s the difference between seeing a vocalist and a performer. Peace from Ohio …
It's always hard to decide which videos to recommend because they are all special. But some of my PTX favorites are "Imagine", "Amazing Grace", "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?", their originals "Sing", and "Evergreen", and their collaboration with Todrick Hall on "The Wizard of Ahhhs". But also special are their Grammy winning "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" and collaboration with Dolly Parton on "Jolene".
As you can see from the unmasking, the microphones everyone is holding up to their costume "mouths" aren't working - they wear complete headsets inside the costumes. When they did Creep after unmasking, I'm not 100% sure which mic was actually live - the ones they were holding, or the headsets they still had on. Speaking of headsets - poor Kirstie! If you watch them perform live, she's the one who's always adjusting her in-ear-monitor to listen to different people singing, but with the costumes, she couldn't do that at all - she would just have to pick the settings she was going to go with for the entire song before getting into the costume! You can see her adjusting her IEM a couple of times after the unmasking. My favorite of the songs they sang for this was Total Eclipse of the Heart - as you saw, in the first two songs they did it was mostly Scott singing lead, but for that one everyone got a chance to sing, and it was (if Scott's voice wasn't already) a dead giveaway as to who the group was. They even got into a cappella mode in the last 20 seconds or so, and did one of their "everyone sings a different melody, but comes back together at the end" finishes for the song.
I enjoyed your reaction to these Pentatonix performances. Thank you. Glad that you liked them. Kirstin had most of the lead on "Total Eclipse Of The Heart". Kevin got to sing more on that one too. Their last performance on the show was on May 10, 2023. I love their unmasked "Creep" performance.
Ahhh yes, music perfection to wake up too! Yes, i knew five notes in and cheered our California rolls on. It was a fun ride, reminded me why i fell in love with a capella when they were on the sing off. Also reminds me how they have grown up, exceppt for kevin they were literally teens on the sing off, can only imagine where their voices are in another ten years! Another universe. As always thank you for the video and commentary
Knew it was them from Scott's first note. How could you miss that voice?! It was totally clear. I'd like to know who came up with that particular costume idea. "Turn Around" was their best in this series IMO. Matt really rocked that Kelly Clarkson song! I really enjoyed how you put this all together. It was a ride! Thank you so much! Great job!
It is difficult to tell Mitch and Kirstie. The only sure way is to listen to the vibrato. Kirstie has a very fast vibrato. I guess when you listen to them a lot, you can tell, but when you are unsure, listen for the vibrato. And just to keep things really interesting, sometimes the very high notes are Kevin's and simetimes the bass is Scott.😊
I always think that seeing them sing either in a video or in person just helps the viewer understand who is singing and how they are harmonizing. It was so obviously PTX. All the comments on the performances as the weeks went on were about how it was obvious. David Archuletta ( came in 2nd on American idol) came in second On Masked Singer. Can’t remember who won.
I agree with seeing them perform it makes it even more amazing. So I’m really hoping for a video of this song at some point. And they make it longer LOL
I agree, i knew who it was right away. I think the judges might have guessed other people just to keep the suspense going. I also knew right away that the mcCaw was David Archuletta because his voice is so pure and unique. I remembered that voice from when he came in 2nd on American Idol.
There's a special concert at the US capital every year for the Fourth of July called "A Capital Fourth" with top pop performers and military bands that's televised on PBS. Pentatonix is not performing this year, but they have in the past. Here's their 2021 contribution, a cover of "Seasons of Love" from the musical "Rent". Due to COVID, that year the acts filmed their songs ahead of time for the broadcast, so they filmed Pentatonix performing live on a rooftop in Los Angeles -- ruclips.net/video/qO01TIVX3SM/видео.html
To be totally honest, them losing makes me think this was fixed since they were in the middle of or just starting their tour, I doubt they had time to do more episodes.
Everyone keeps missing the premise of the show. It's not about the music, perse. It's about if the audience and the judges could recognize who they were. Most , if not all of the winners are little known musicians or those that persons may have forgotten about or may have been a part of a group ( Kandi Buruss) and no one would have heard them sing alone before. Ptx is so widely known and loved , they must have been recognized from their first song, but was kept on for the audience they brought.
They didn't win because the show is scripted. They had a "rise from the ashes" script for one of the singers. Who, amazingly, rose from the ashes and WON! Just as expected. BTW, in the US version of the show NO GROUP has ever won the show. And, since they just shot down the best singing group of all time, no group ever will win it.
Rigged show for sure. I think even the judges were star-struck by them, particularly after the unmasked performance which I have watched SO many times and NEVER get tired of. PTX was LEAGUES above the other contestants. I think a positive from the experience was that new PTX fans were born. PTX never disappoints; their talent is just off the charts, and I feel so happy to be able to experience them in person during my lifetime.
Part of what caused them to come in third place was that the other two acts in the top three were also long-term, experienced singers - David Archuleta (who was runner up on season 9 of American Idol (and should have won), as well as Bishop Briggs (who is actually Sarah McLaughlin) were the final two. And while I will say that the "California Roll" should have unquestionably won, it wasn't like they lost to Rudy Giuliani or Sarah Palin.

There is a chance Scott and the rest just sang the song better on their curtain call performance of Creep. But I'm certain it has everything to do with those microphones. I've noticed before, that singers who are using the overly bulky costumes which requires them to wear a head or ear mounted microphones, their sound always comes out a little hollow and overmodulated. Those mics just can't handle the power of some singers voices.
Then going home third was probably the biggest upset in TMS history lol. It was absolute bullshit! Idk if they had to leave early for tour or if the show is just rigged but something was afoot. Especially because the winner had already been sent home by PTX once and quite honestly wasn’t very good. Certainly not PTX-level talent and mastery of singing. But whatever, it’s just a silly show they did for fun so I can’t be too outraged lol.
I don't think it's just a matter of seeing their faces versus not. Sure, that has some impact on the audience, but the unmasked version of Creep at the end was very noticeably better sung/performed than the masked version. My guess is that the sushi roll costumes actually impacted their performance. It had to be horribly awkward in there, and being physically uncomfortable, and at least a little disoriented because you can't see/hear as well as you're used to, plus whatever balance issues there might've been, has to effect their singing. Heck, the way the movement of their arms was restricted, I'd have spent the whole time thinking about how, if I lost my balance and fell forward, I'd either smash my face on the floor or break my arms on the armholes in the costume. :/ Which makes me wonder about costume bias on this show -- someone wearing a costume where there's only makeup on their face is going to have an advantage over someone who's wearing an actual mask, who'll have an advantage over someone wearing something big and unwieldy like the sushi costumes.
I knew as soon as Scott opened his mouth and sang 2 words 😂 This was the last Masked Singer season. So not too long ago.
I figured it wouldn't take their fans too long.
Same.

Electrifying is a perfect word for that!
9:31 is the exact moment you can tell it's Mitch because that is his signature angelic high voice right there

I'm going to see them in Sept in Irvine, CA. I saw them last Sept at The Hollywood Bowel, and it was so amazing. Can't wait to see them again. ❤
The general rumor is that they had to depart for their european tour so they bowed out at 3rd voluntarily
I love how Kirstie has blonde hair like she often does when she performs in concert.

This aired recently. I think the finale was in May. I think they didn't win because they had tour dates set up. So this was planned, IMO.
The masked singer was filmed just before their current world tour started. so it is very recent!
Imagine how many people, there and at home, just got mitch slapped!
New subscriber here! I’ve been binge watching your videos since yesterday after seeing you’ve reacted to PTX, Voiceplay and Home Free! Loving it 😊

I love raspy Scott.
Still upset they didn’t win
The only other time I correctly called a Masked Singer in the 1st episode was with Chris Daughtry.
Haven't been as certain about the identity of a masked singer since Donny Osmond.
Love your reactions, keep up the good work!!!
Thanks Larry!
Recommend their cover of Sound Of Silence.
Thanks, I’ll have to check that one out!
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The problem with this is that if you do them individually, you get to see the clues, the comments, and the guesses
Love your reaction!! SUBSCRIBING 👍

I think it might have been difficult for them if they won. They were getting ready to back on tour.
Strange to hear them with a backing track.
Really enjoyed your reaction! Also, everytime i watch your videos i can't stop wondering if you're related to Zachary Levi!? 😅
Thank you. 🤔…I don’t think so.
Then going home third was probably the biggest upset in TMS history lol. It was absolute bullshit! Idk if they had to leave early for tour or if the show is just rigged but something was afoot. They didn't win because some felt 5 against 1 wasn't fair. PTX had a world tour due and accommodated the show thusly. We all know they won.

During the CREEP song was Scott feeling off? The intro was horrible and not what I anticipated from such an amazing performer
