- Amish Farming Is Something ALL Farmers Can Still Learn From Today!
Welcome back to Down On The Farm. Today on this channel, we will be talking about how the Amish farm and what can we learn from them? There are many things we can learn from the Amish. One is their simple way of living as well as the kind of community they have.
When it comes to farming, the Amish is quite known for it. The Amish people are very strict on their religious values. As much as possible, they do not want to use technology. Instead of using tractors, they often preferred using horses when they wanted to plant and plow the fields. Watch this video to know more about how the Amish farm and what can we learn from them?

With the way things are going, seems farming will go back to he old ways. Great respect.
I PRAY SO!
Gonna happen, our ag system is definitely not sustainable
Bro had to meet the 8 minute requirement with 2 minutes of content
You said how does Amish soil compare to traditional soil, I think it should be is how does traditional Amish soil compare to modern agriculture soil... We so need to go back to this type of farming, nice vid thanks :)
I'm suprised this doesn't have more views. You did a good job on this video with the exception of the music. The music is out of place. Bluegrass would have been for fitting.
Yes very useful. People need to pull together
This is how God intended us to farm.
Exactly
@Cavaleiros Redpillados Your RUclips name is epic!
@Cavaleiros Redpillados Cool!
@Cavaleiros Redpillados I do speak and read Spanish but can't write in it.
@Cavaleiros Redpillados I can read a little Portuguese. I once carried on a conversation speaking Spanish with the other speaking Portuguese. That happened in Navy boot camp of all places. Very similar languages.
Thank you, well done.
This just show me that I'm not crazy. I can do this
As an African I wish I could learn the Amish way of doing things especially farming.
Are you a Boer from Africa?
This system is exactly what Indian farmers did before the British came. They grew crops and with every crops they grew lentils like chickpeas and other legumes to have nitrogen in soil. They used heavy manure from cows that every farmer kept for dairy and ox that used for ploughing but not deep ploughing. The British scientist which traveled to India in 1890 wrote how the Indian farmers in India harvested crops 3 to 4 times a year. the reason why the Mughal empire was wealthiest than any kingdoms in Europe for this precise reason. The fertility of the soil.
If you read the writing of macro polo where he talked about jaggery as honey from plants.
Some of those machines look pretty sophisticated. I wonder if they make them themselves or buy parts and assemble
This is all very romantic and fascinating but if Amish farming techniques were used universally, we might all starve to death. We live among some of the most productive farmers on the planet with a sizable Amish community nearby. The difference in what their fields yield is astounding!
According to current political science and industry, this mode of agriculture should not exist and should be impossible. We learn and expect that technology is the solution to hunger, disease and pollution.
And "they" are full of crap. This is how it should be done.
You’re brainwashed if you think those people aren’t living right 😂😂😂
Most of this common practice in farming the world around, not just amish farms.
Lleave the AMISH ALONG....
Never been happy with the treatment of their animals. Draft horses can be worked way too hard and then sent to slaughter. Need to have enough horses to rotate. They also operate puppy mills which is deplorable. I know I'll get criticism, but my opinion, and I believe caring for animals humanely and with compassion is the right way to go.
Did you see examples of poor treatment in this video? Did you see a puppy mill?
Way to go Lee Ann, just slander a couple hundred thousand Amish/ Mennonites all at once.
Why don't you try that with black criminals.....hmmm?
@@willbass2869 Just because there wasn't any poor treatment or puppy mills in this video doesn't mean it doesn't exist. I have seen, read, and heard of examples. I have seen draft and carriage horses in kill pens, I have seen puppy mill dogs living in horrible conditions. If you haven't, maybe you should do a little research. I didn't mention anyone by name, so slander, I don't think so. This is my opinion and personal experience, so I will stand by this, whole heartedly. Why am I writing this when I don't give a flying @#$% what you think, I don't know. Go away and tell somebody else.
You are right. They send 100k horse to mexico to slaughter a year. They drive their horses until they fall over dead. Largest puppy mills in US. When they are shut down for inhumane violations, they format a new LLC under another new. Children treated as slaves with 6th grade efucation...control. women have it the worst. Not much about Godliness..
@@LReno-di9cm so horses are somehow"better" than millions of cattle and undeserving of dying?
What about tens of millions of turkeys? Hundreds of millions of chickens?
Get outta here.
The *ONLY* reason the entire heavy horse/draft horse remains as a viable genetic strain is PRECISELY because they have value. There value as work animals ensures breed existence.
@Садоводство horses on pasture allows soil to take a test from constant cropping. Also, ground too rocky or steep for normal cropping.
Fukuoka is fine for gardening.....but you don't feed complex societies with tens of millions of people by throwing rice/barley seed by hand
I'm interested in transplanting apples in June?
How can I contact or visit an Amish community or organization to learn more about their farming techniques firsthand practically?
The earth Amish plough is clean, their food is free pesticides, what else?
Let’s go back to. A better time of. true American goodnessssss!!!!??? Simple times !!!
Farming has become industrial I live in Kansas trying to buy a small farm and all the land is rural suburbs. That's basically residential not agricultural. People you need to understand you can't eat without a farmer so help us keep land farms and not houses. Edwards county Missouri has land for sale the already got it map out... Go look
Industrial farming will feed the billions on this planet not the Amish.
@@ryancritchlow7131 actually it's just about even.
Numerous university studies have shown that per hour of work & per dollar of purchased inputs the Amish match or even exceed neighboring "industrial" style farming methods in production and actually exceed them in profitability.
Also, this vid was incorrect, you can farm up to a quarter section (160 AC) with 6 horses and maintain production and fertility.
Edwards county MISSOURI?
NO such place!
@@willbass2869 the city of Edwards and the county of Benton.. better?
I think what people are missing in my comment is. WHY can't I just be independent? I saw a cart the other day full of Roman cup noodles to be delivered to someones car outside. I don't know what to think about THIS anymore.
Not a very accurate view of the working Amish farmers. Most rely on large family's to get work done. they also hire custom operators for spraying and other chores they aren't allowed by church to do. They do use fertilizers and they also rely on jobs off farm to cover living costs, just like everyone else. They don't buy any insurance, instead rely on the Amish community church members to cover each other. Not sure how much income taxes they are subject to, but they don't pay into Social Security. As for horses, the rest of the farmers in the world won't ever revert to using them for anything but recreation. The general public will starve if that ever becomes the only way to farm. The Amish would not make it if they had to adhere to the laws the rest of have to obey. The church covers them and the church also gives them exemption from many taxes and laws.
Where is this farm? I'd like to hear about their religion, too, a little. And what work do the women and children do?
The women and daughters care for the household duties and the yard. The men and sons deal with the livestock and farming or whatever else the family profession us
All the Yankees are coming south. Ought to be cheaper property prices up north. I'll buy cheap land suitable for a homestead, live amongst the Amish.
We all will be downsizing.
A lot of "restatements" in this video.
It could have been much better if it was shorter and only discussed the real points.
No mention of their stock needs for farming, or the equipment they use, in deeper details.
Is it worth it?
I saw a rescue horse from an Amish farmer (stated as such) and it was in terrible shape. I would have called it abused. What is the cause of this? Why would people we consider godly and kind treat their horse this way? I wondered how many horses they require to operate a 40-acre farm, which is the size you suggested for this level of farming.
The average Amish farm IS NOT just 40 acres. 40 acres wouldn't even feed their horses for a year. Family groups farm large farms, hundreds of acres. Their soil management isn't always great. Wind erosion removing top soil is a big problem. This is due to plowing in the fall, the old way, so the winter freeze/thaw cycles break down the clouds. Then they can just disk and plant in the spring. This video is not accurate in many ways.
You can't their techniques to feed millions of people.
this guy keeps repeating himself on and on
Weown need no food
I think you said the same 4 things repeatedly in 8 minutes.
Too much yakking!
Poor thumbnail choice
Let's go Brandon f j b
You kept repeating the same points!!!
wait everyone think why lower the production of food , why train pilots from china in Canada why take guns from Canadians is there more to this involving chine is there a act of treason happening weakening the people think about it
They get so many perks maybe some arent real Amish? Would be a great scam you gotta admit
They don't get any perks..
Huh?
The problem with saying this is only conducive to small scale is ignorant parroting and a lack of vision. It's also to not see the obvious right in front of your face. Lemme enlighten you people. Let's instead of considering the Pennsylvania Amish in Lancaster a bunch of discrete families we consider them a company called "the Amish". They aren't farming 40 acres of contiguous land they are managing in this traditional way 400,000 acres of basically contiguous land in lancaster!! just because they do so in a fiefdom using family units doesn't mean this is not proof of this working at scale. Rename dads managers and wives foreman and the religious leaders executives and it's easy to see you are all short sighted fools parroting negativity instead of ingenuity and refinement
