- Chicago plays their biggest hit single from the album 'Chicago XI', released a few months earlier. This song was written and sung by bassist Peter Cetera. A huge hit, but only performed in late 1977 and briefly in 2001. This footage was filmed only 3 months prior to the untimely passing of guitarist Terry Kath.
Things are steadily fading away for those of us who grew up and were inspired by these songs. I see its been 2-years since the last comment. These were the golden years of rock music. Nothing like it today. The fact that Chicago could make this song sound so good live is a testimony to their talent.

Here’s a comment today.I remember listening to their first album,not cd,summer of 69 or 70.I think it was Chicago Transit Authority then.Listened very sporadically over the years but now I’m back really appreciating them.Not sure whether to laugh or cry.

1977 I turned 15. Just at that point of discovering my parents were WRONG - long haired hippies were not actually destroying the world.
I wish I could turn back the clock of time and see them in person at the height of their day! Terry Kath and Peter Cetera, there will never be another pairing this perfect! Makes me miss the days of my youth.

I alway thought this was a more powerful, and rocking "ballad" than If You Leave Me now. The sense of drama seemed authentic, and it's hard to beat that punch-to-the-gut, BUH-PA, chorus. I wish Peter's love songs had stayed more in this vein.

Barbara Reguin , Terry and Peter had very different voices , Robert Lamm once said in an interview Peter had one of the best voices in the world and I agree, so why would he be jealous , they made him a leader because they knew he was good and he put plenty of money in their pockets so if u don't like him u don't have to call him names , it only shows that your the one who looks like a jerk !!!!!!!!

Some of the greatest music ever written. It’s so important that we introduce our grandchildren to this music while they’re in their early teens. So glad that there are videos and lyrics that they can look at online
it's just one of my special song memories (1977)
Its 2022 and I'm sitting here listening to this song and thinking about who my favorite vocalist and band might be. The thing is, there was so much talent from the 70s and 80s that even picking for each decade is damn near impossible! I have a deep and abiding affection for much of the music from those two decades, due in no small part to the incredible singular talents that populated them. I can pick 10 heavy hitters in terms of vocalists and bands (not always together) from each decade but that barely scratches the surface! What about the niche hits, sometimes called one-hit wonders- maybe even more amazing because they had one shot, took it and knocked it out the park! Those of us who grew up during the 70s and 80s are probably the most blessed because we had the best of a lot of worlds and nothing that's come since has a hope of touching them.
The more I listen to those first XI Chicago albums, I love them more decades after.

@@moodylicious That "Terry was gonna ditch the band and go solo" is the dramatic narrative that everyone hangs onto. Personally, I don't think even Terry Kath would give up his Chicago paycheck for the very shaky prospect of a solo career during the height of disco. I don't know why he hadn't made an album earlier, like Robert Lamm, but if he made one in 1978, it may or may not have caught fire (Robert's didn't nor did Peter's first) . Either way, he would've been smart to remain in Chicago, do whatever he wanted on the side, and slap Peter when he started writing Hard For Me to Say I'm Sorry.
@@ptownscribe1254 Did you not see the movie Terry's daughter made on her dad? Camelia, Terry's wife speaks of his intentions. His journal or notebook of lyrics, song ideas, band ideas are shown. He was due to rehearse Jan 24, had he survived the night before. Cook County was to be the name of his band. I don't recall if it was going to be a hard split or if he'd have been granted the luxury denied Peter; that of having a solo band and material while staying/touring with Chicago.
Re: smacking Cetera for writing one of his ballads, somebody should have smacked Pankow for Colour My World (1970). It was nice the first two times, the last 200 times were 200 too many for me. I heard that song usually twice a night, live, at every Saturday and Sunday night school dance. I have grown to abhor the dirge. At least Cetera's songs had something to them. One could try to argue the sentiment and simplicity of CMW is what makes it. It was so overplayed, I saw it as a simple dirge, despite it being a beloved wedding song for many. We all have opinions. It's allowed.
Peter as a soloist sung this song consistently about 2 to 3 keys lower up till he retired. He sounds better when he sings higher. But no matter where he's at .It still sounds like Peter Cetera.
When Peter decide to start touriogn agioan aorund 2003 after he aprticpate in david Foster's PBS specoal he decideed to lower the keys down 1 to 2 and fially 3 keys lower fo his voice could nto reach the original high notes anymore. Alot of his songs began to sound differently but he still performed then very well. Soem of his liv eperformances from then until he retired sounded good tog reat and hate to admit but he was off a few times such as his Live in salt lake city album ut still sounded execently. The big issue why peter eneded up not reuniting with chicago for tehir 2016 induction into the rock and roll hall of fame was because he asked his former band mates to lower 25 or 6 to 4 from the key of a to e one step lower from the rogijnal recording. peter and this was very nice and loyakl of him also wanted to brign back Laduir de Oliveria DonnieDacus Chris Pinnick Bill Champlin and his younger brother kenny cetera whom played ith them on his track soff Chicago 17 and th subsequent final tour of his. He eve rmentipone dhow he wishes terry coudl ahve been there as well for teh induciton. The response he got back from his old brothers; CHILL OUT DUDE. being remionded fo what happened when he sperperated from chicago he dcecided the hell with them and decided not to rejoin them> Now I will be the firs tto admit Peter was wrong for not attednign the ceremony. I dont blame him for not eantign to perform wiht Chicago but he should have still gone and stood up with them one final time to accept his award and say thnak you to all of fthe fans. Ironically Steve perry did surprisingly attend and accept hsi award with jopurney thnaking all fo teh fans and saying he never gorgot them. The roginal members still left in the band robert lee and Jimmy all act liek they were the msot important members and songwriters in the band and pretty much bad mouth peter and danny whenever they get the chance. Jimmy in particular will nto even mnetion peter anymore when tlaking about the hsitory of the band. Lee acts like he si regressing to a kid and Robert though still a very taliented singer/songwriter has become so rpetentious to the sickenign point. ASO AND THIS IS JSUT MY OPINION BUT LIUDER DE OLIVERIRA BILL CHAMPLIN JASON SCHEFF TRIS IMBODEN AND KEITH HOWLAND SHOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN INDCUTED INTO TEH ROCKL AND ROLL HALL OF FAME AS WELL FOR TEHY HELPED TO KEEP CHCIAGO OTNUNING ALL OF THSOE YEARS. Chicago will always be a legendary band and peter cetera has the msot unique tenor golden opive of all time/.
It was the band who had Peter singing those song keys quite high during his tenure with the band. Cetera was on Fox News in 2001 explaining why he sang lower on his last album Another Perfect World. He actually lowered the keys because (1) As a soloist he was no longer under pressure to sing high constantly (2)He was actually where he was comfortable. Bill Champlin he told John Beaudin on Rock History about 3 years ago. That Jason Scheff was constantly under pressure to sing a certain way , and under pressure to match Cetera's vocals (in Chicago) Champlin said also that Cetera could lower any song by 4 keys and it will still sound like Cetera and that Jason is also a much better singer since he left Chicago in 2016. Jason had pitch problems . Being the tenor in Chicago is not what it' was cracked up to be in reality. It was a hard job.

What and unbelievably creative band...all the intricacies of all the instruments. This was a very special time ....being a 70s boy with older sisters I am very nostalgic about this time...you had 3 great singers in this band..I think they went to Loyola or DePaul..or something boy are they are great!

All of the originals (plus Laudir De Oliveira) were Chicago. Once Terry died, they were never the same, but still hit some good songs like “Alive Again”… sadly, that was it. The 80s ‘Chicago’ stuff was just adult contemporary rubbish.

Maybe it's me but they seem tired on this tour. Doesn't seem to be as motivated. I saw them in the spring of 1977 at the Olympia Stadium in Detroit.
They toured way too much. Terry especially was just tired of that and the music they were making by then.
Peter played it with the Bad Daddies. Still sounded great.

Oh yeha i know for robert has alway said when If You leave Me Now was releaed it drove me crazy and i know it drove terry crazy because the ballards were nto the way we saw ourselves.. Boo ho cry me a frekaing river. The horn section Walt Lee Jimmya nd rpobert had become so jealous oif peter by this ppoint it wa sickening. Oh yeah Peter's ballards made them seem too soft but Jimmy I seemm tor ember you writing a ballard off the second album what was it valled oh eyah Colour my World which was a huge prom and wedding song at that time. Guess which song my Aunt Judya nd uncle gary ;picked as the ri wedding song?/ You guessed write Colour my World. Did you ever hear the interview ehere Jimmy mentioned frank Sinatra the freakijgnj hairman oft h board liked his soft ballard so much he wanted to remake it with one caveat. He asked Jimmy to write one mroe verse so he woudl ahve a full song to sing. After careful cnsideration Jimmy deciced nto to grant frabnk's reque4st for in hsi won words it woudl ahv eruined the integrity fo what iw as trying to put into the song. When frank Sinatra likes your song and wants to record it if he wants one mrore verse you write one more verse4. Another rainy day in New York City which robert wrote and peter sang was released first butt when his ballard was released alter took all of his thunder and he took a temper tantrum. Grown men still acting like children when they were in arguably the biggest jazz rock band in the world. Peter admitted he was never r eally welcomed intot he songwriting circle for robert and Jimmy ahd writtn alot fot eh earlier hits. terry was also a great songwriter but none fo hsi compositions really gained any commercial single statuts unfortunately. Peter gave them their first number one as wellas their firs tand only grammy for any of tehri songs which they still resent to this very day. What is click tracks?
A lotta bands use a pre sequence tracks to fill some instruments, special sounds or vocals to live songs for a better quality sound performance.. the drummer needs a Clicks sound track to maintain the correct beat and avoiding a mistake.. that’s why you can see the drummer using Headphones

I hear it too strawberry Fields forever because of the instrumental style that's very Beatlesque thank you influence style of John Lennon and McCartney lyrical style of writing and singing about love.
Peter said it was inspired by the Beatles. Penny Lane used a pocket flute and he used it also on this song. The only song Peter sang lead from Chicago 11, and it was the only top 10 hit from that album.

And Carl Jacobson the song Penny Lane very much has that flowering horn sound Chicago was influenced by. I think the album was called 'Strawberry Fields Forever' by the Beatles

Terry and Peter's favorite bands were The Beatles and The Beach Boys. This song is very Beatles-y. Peter told Lee to use his pocket piccolo to sound like "Penny Lane" and Terry overdubs a very George Harrison-like lick before the bridge. They even had a few Beach Boys on back-up vocals
Wish Cetera would get over himself. Such a shame he can’t make peace
