    The BMW 335i is an interesting car. For this review, we hop in the N54 inline six turbo powered BMW 335i four door! The last time we drove one of these it was a lemon, so it was great to do the car justice for this in depth look and review of now one of my favorite BMW's. Thanks for watching!

      335i having an open diff is done because having the LSD in there would make it comparable enough to buying an M3. Similar enough to how people mod a WRX to make it comparable to an STI. Was told that if $3-5 k of mods can make up for a difference of 16k between an M3 and it's 3 series counterpart that even less M3s would be sold. (Friend who works at a BMW as a tech) But some research shows that you can have the dealer put in the M series LSD. The cost is about 2300 + labor. But not many know that is an option.

    N54 335i all the way! It's what built my RUclips channel to what it is today!
    148K miles -18psi over the last 4 years of ownership - no major issues 😀
    DIY is my fiend for all repairs 👍🏻

    • @evanmillett6857
      @evanmillett6857 7 лет назад +1

      BMW Fanatic what is your general setup for 18 psi... dci, dp and e85? I'm sure you have a video on it but I didn't want to go looking lol

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic 7 лет назад

      Evan Millett just DCI, JB4 G5 ISO on map 5, e30 mix with 93, CP-e charge pipe & Forge Motorsport Diverter valves (15-23psi springs added). Still on stock downpipes too (which do hurt me a little bit power wise, but it does great as is). Logs all look good and target that boost and hold it for the normal time with ease! I'm looking to upgrade to something bigger here in the next 6-10months from now, so I've been holding back on a few things lol.

    • @evanmillett6857
      @evanmillett6857 7 лет назад

      BMW Fanatic stock dp?? So I guess you'd say it's pretty safe to run map 2 on stock dps? Here in va beach area e85 is easy to come by and the 93 is pretty good. Map 5 usually gets around 14-15 with just dci and 93 but I've been afraid to play with e85 and map 2 as a default because of stock dps. I like leaving it on map 1 as it feels smoother and more refined, so if map 2 was an option I'd be all over that... something bigger as in a different car or single turbo? That'd be cool. No one has really documented a single turbo transformation on RUclips

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic 7 лет назад

      Evan Millett Stock dps, yep! I would not recommend map 2 with stock dps as other parameters are changed and not just "psi" levels. Map 5 is an auto tuning map, so it's touchy at times. Yeah I'm the same way with the map 5 with 93 only. I'm looking to do the JB4 backend flash via MHD which will shift the fueling and timing over the the DME and then the boost raised by 2psi on each map. Smoother and of course more power. Map 1 then gets to be around 15psi and would feel great. And then the other maps upped up as well, etc. I'll be doing that next since it really isn't much at all to add 👍🏻

    • @BMWFanatic
      @BMWFanatic 7 лет назад

      Evan Millett Still BMW, so either a '14 550i with the N63TU (V8 TT) or the '14 X5 50i SUV with the same engine, just trying to decide on which really for my needs

    • @xanthopoulos1825
      @xanthopoulos1825 5 лет назад +19

      mag iczny I wouldn’t say they messed up with the n55, they had learned from there first turbo motor that they do not need to over build as the had done. They then increased the efficiency and reliability of the motor at the cost of a portion of its tunability. Bmw made a business decision not a drivers decision.

    • @JuanMartinez-hy6yf
      @JuanMartinez-hy6yf 5 лет назад

      No shit of course they know if your dumbass knows then how could they that built it and came up with everything wouldn’t know? It’s a bigger more modern inline 6 performance engine than the 325i so it has power just like the Supra and it has two intakes packed in a compact race ready light rwd shiftmatic coupe body so it’s basically unbeatable for convenience racing its only flaw from being absolutely perfect is it’s slightly lower power compared too a Ferrari or corvette zr1 due too it’s v6 which is fucking strong af either way but it’s not a giant v8 supercharged or a v12 ...

    • @lochnessmonstere3042
      @lochnessmonstere3042 7 лет назад +24

      In the e46, the sound deadening beneath/behind the rear seats degrade and make a very strong crayon smell. I removed it and had a big reduction in that smell. It could very well be the dash glue as well in most of them

    • @zachm4973
      @zachm4973 5 лет назад +15

      That, and everyone else shrugs the car off too, "Eh. It's not an M3. Just a standard college girl 3 series". Until you see these 12 year old, 130,000+ mile FBO E85 N54's run with some of the quickest modern day performance cars. Truly an underrated engineering masterpiece. On paper they are not even strong engines, yet modify the N54 and it handles what you throw at it with ease. So much ease its almost like the engine is continuously taunting you to push it closer and closer to the limit.
      Beautiful engine that can handle well north of 700whp. The crazy thing is the car remains such a tame and trustworthy daily driver even at those power levels. It's almost like your standard house cat. Indoors, they look so innocent. They sit on your lap, smile, and purr. Yet, let the cat outside, and you are quickly reminded it is one of the most agile, graceful, and successful hunters in the world.

      Jairo Canales I love mine, work on it whenever I have any issues which like the starter and injector last summer. I don't have any major issues with mine at all. Plus, almost ALL new cars now a days are direct injection so some type of valve cleaning is gonna have to be needed and done anyways, but I have no complaints there.

    10:55 the reason there isnt a LSD in the 335 is because it would make it a lot more like the M3 and BMW still wants people to buy the high end sporty M series.

    • @computiNATEor

      Yes, but electronic controls are not even close to an LSD. LSDs haven't been in non-M since the mid 90s, IIRC.

      I'm assuming you own a 135i. Do you know if the fuel pump setup is the same as the 335i? (low pressure pump in the rear, high pressure up front) I REALLY want a 135i at some point, but with the fuel pump issues that the 335i has; i would have to get 128i instead because it's way too expensive to replace the pumps.
      Let me know if you have the answers!

    • @Ted335i
      @Ted335i 7 лет назад

      maxxjett films have you driven this auto, honestly? It's quick and clever. I love it. And this is the version where both paddles work in both directions. Pull towards you with either paddle to go up the gears. Push away to click down the gears. Better for changing mid corner when compared to the newer crappier paddles where one side is + and the other is -. With those + / - in mid corner you could go up or down a gear because you have to pull both towards you.
      Gear change is quick and also smooth. Try one. Americans seem to be the only market really into manuals because most of your cars are autos. Europeans like the fast autos because we were raised on manuals are poor man cars and work vans, autos are for expensive cars.

    • @maxxjettfilms6322
      @maxxjettfilms6322 7 лет назад +3

      Ted335i I have driven plenty of bmws, most of them autos. they do shift fast, but they are completely different from the manual counterparts. My only beef was that he said they were identical. having an auto regardless of how good or bad it is gives a different personality and driving experience from a manual. now identical except for a trim package yes, the car will essentially be the same, different transmission means a different driving experience.

    • @Ted335i
      @Ted335i 7 лет назад

      maxxjett films If you want to drive at the maximum then you use a fast auto with paddles. If you want to drive slower, one hand steering, then you use a manual.😀
      The auto gearbox and paddles on the 335i of this generation gets great reviews. Try before you criticise.

    I picked up a 2007 335i about 6 months ago. I’ve usually have a BMW in the garage from E36’s E46’s. Went with this one because of ratings, price it was and how well these engines are. I’ve cleaned up a few things and did all the maintenance, then added performance parts and a few different tunes for different fuels. I love the car, BMW’s just feel aggressive and luxurious at the same time BUT the only thing these and the newer F series engines are missing is the Vanos Noise/Grunt and the power ban you would feel when the timing changes. Now I know on a factory Turbo engine you more rely on boost than timing BUT if your going to claim a Vanos engine it needs to jump at you like the older S and M engines.

    High pressure fuel pumps are part of direct injected gas engines. My Saturn Sky's ecotec engine has the same thing. Usually when the stock fuel setups aren't enough, you add a secondary port injection system.

It sits flat with hardly any body roll thru the corners. It feels planted. It's got enough power for fun. It looks good AND it's reliable. Next I'm hoping to find a 325i touring so I can swap the 330i motor into it.

      atvmxracer54 Further along in the video he states that it has catless downpipes and a muffler delete as well. You can also see an AFE dual cone intake. Additionally, cars that are this heavily modified will also have a front mount intercooler. So, after combining all of the aforementioned modifications along with the proper, higher-level Cobb tune, 440whp is not unlikely.

    this is pretty cool for sure. Honestly i never seen a modded 335i before unless it was the coupe so this is pretty cool in itself i'm glad you did one because i enjoyed this a lot. i have seen video of some bmw straight six motors tuned to a rediculous level like 2j level and i dont know if they were the n54 but think it could reach that level easily since it seems to handle 440 WHP like a breeze. i would love to see you drive a BMW with a straight six at a stupid HP level just to see what you think.

    I have this car and love it. There’s something about the hydraulic steering and high speed stability of this car. I recently drove an f30 500 miles and it was almost unnerving with the floaty electric power steering.
    The bad part about the n54 is it’s not as smooth as the n55 or as reliable. Gotta weigh the difference if you’re buying used. Personally I’d go for the n55 if a daily and n54 if you’re modifying.
    The n54 is just more robust to get big numbers from, but the n55 will be more bulletproof.

    The lack of dipstick is not that huge of a problem it has two level sensors and one or two oil pressure sensors. You can get an oil stick mod for it if you really want it, it is pretty convinient because it says how many oz or ml to add for full.
    Also if you got it with DKG (DCT) then it has conventional left paddle pull downshift...

OEM injectors, HPFP, LPFP, only thing changed since 60k miles is water pump, its above 100k miles now. You keep telling your self how bad the engine is, eventually engine will weed out the weak sauses. Glad people like you are not related to BMW anymore, WEAK.
