I will testify that tip #1 is 100% true. I decided to create a small 3"x5" piece of art every single day for a year. It was a complete failure! I found that it took all my time to plan and execute even such a small picture, so I accomplished absolutely nothing else in my day. I also found that I was looking to do the easiest thing possible just to get it done before bedtime. Finally, my skills never improved in the slightest. I ended-up hating the experience and I only lasted 3 weeks. I longed to do a good project that I could linger over and put my whole heart and soul into. The only way I benefited was that I finally experimented with some of the art supplies and artistic styles I had never gotten around to investigating. It truly is better to take one's time when it comes to creating art.
Like your tips! Although I take my time when drawing & painting I too think „taking time“ for details is important! And, I really like the paper tip to help with colours very good & will, try it out. Thanks
Thank you, Jason! I've spent months searching online for a helpful art teacher and cannot find anyone even close to you. Your explanations make things that seem so complicated into something that seems very achievable. After watching (quite a few ) of your videos, I have successfully completed a couple of decent (not quite perfect lol) drawings in graphite and pastel. I have now joined your Patreon channel and am having a go at the tiger. I'm figuring roughly $5 (AUD) a week is a bargain and a half for your video tutoring and am feeling confident to continue on now that I have the supplies you have recommended. Thanks again! 🙂
You’re advice on colour/value matching is what I do with watercolour, I’m usually more interested in nailing the value because I’m not painting “realism” and I usually squint my eyes to blur my vision a bit which makes it a lot easier to judge without seeing the details.
Thank you for your inspiration and excellent advice. I’ve used Prismacolor Pencils and after seeing one of your tutorials invested in 36 pack Faber Castells and Pastel mat paper. I’m really enjoying this medium! Thank you Jason!!! Bob
This is such a great idea! I use Prismacolor pencils and this will really work for me. Thank you! I wish companies would sell a sheet or two of pastelmat to try it out.
You are the very BEST Teacher! Thanks for the tips! The colour matching is the #1 tip that has helped me to take my work to the next level-and it works in other mediums, I mean I find myself using it with coloured pencils and acrylics as well. Thank You! Now if I could just master the "take my time" thing, I know there will be more improvement!
Holy cats! You just gave me a big “Aha!!”
Thank you!
