I feel like in the musical, Lydia and Betelgeuse parallel each other in some aspects. Both are “invisible” in a way, and both can bond over strangeness and the paranormal, but one knows how to be happy with it, while the other can’t. It makes so much sense why they became friends.

This musical is based off the movie Beetlejuice by Tim Burton by is somewhat different. It follows the story of Lydia the girl who is still mourning over her mother's death, the demon ghoul Beetlejuice, and Adam and Barbara who are a married couple who recently passed away. Adam and Barbara try scare off Lydia and her father from their house but instead befriends Lydia, as she can see spirits. Beetlejuice, on the other hand, like to wreck havoc and is summoned by being called 3 times by his name. Beetlejuice tries to convince Lydia to invoke him throughout the play (Idk if you wanted the full storyline or not so spoiler alert under this) He eventually succeeds as Lydia gets tired of her Father's selfishness and together, they enjoy chaos and scaring the neighborhood but eventually, someone tries to exorcise the place and is 'killing' barbara and adam by mistake. Beetlejuice tells Lydia that the only way to save her is if she agrees to marry him, which will give him life and permanent access to the living world. But Lydia tricks him and instead escape to the netherworld where she tries to find her mom but comes to the realization that she can be happy alive and with the people who are already surrounding her. She goes back and with everybody's help, she tricks beetlejuice to marry her and right after, they get him killed and adam and barbara live happily together
i dont think uve seen the whole musical, maybe u just listened to the soundtrack so ur confused. if u saw the musical, u would know that lydia pretended to fall in love with beetlejuice so she could kill him when he reached his final form. beetlejuice pretended he was in love with lydia so he could reach final form by marrying her.
