@cool person Ummm..okay. So what if I did that? Are you salty just because you realized you aren't as smart as me? You really are honestly pathetic. We can determine the anatomy of each genera by comparing with more complete more closely related individuals, and they look practically the same, yes they do have some characteristics that make them different, but overall, they're the same. Also, what ways do the other genera fall uniqueness when compared to Spinosaurus? They are all piscivorous, they all have crocodilian snouts, they all have conical teeth, they all have relatively short legs and long arms, they all have hook like claws. Where are the differences between all of them again. Is it size? Is Spinosaurus only different because of its size? You do realize the second largest carnivorous dinosaur is also a Spinosaurid (well if it was compared with the size of Spinosaurus). Is it the sail? Some we actually had a sail, like Ichthyovenator (plus, unrelated dinosaurs also had sails like Acrocanthosaurus and Concavenator). So, how is Spinosaurus unique again?
@cool person Spinosaurus' lifestyle is literally present in every Spinosaurid. Why straight and conical teeth? Why crocodilian-like snouts? Why the pressure sensors in their snouts. Every single thing about the skull of every Spinosaurid tells us that they are specialized fish eaters. Not one is specialized to a different ecological niche and the rest have different ones. What do you mean by the features are more defined? The crocodile-like skull is the same on every genera. The only thing I can think about is the sail. Yes, the sail is very much defined in both Oxalaia and Spinosaurus, but that just makes Spinosaurus lose its uniqueness. Coupled with the fact that many non-dinosaur prehistoric animals such as Dimetrodon, Edaphosaurus, and Platyhistrix all have sails that make their height twice as high if not more than that. Yes, the snout of Spinosaurus may be more narrow (the only reason why the jaws are more narrow is because the snout is bigger, and it would have proportionally longer and more narrow jaws), have efficient alignment at the teeth, and a defined notch. Those little characteristics do make Spinosaurus unique, but I'm talking about the major "unique" traits of Spinosaurus most people talk about. Like it being Ichthyophagous/piscivorous, the sail, and the crocodile-like snout. Little characteristics do make each genera unique, but major characteristics, not so much. The sail on Ichthyovenator is not a hump but a sail, although it has a steep depression right at the illium/ischia (don't remember which one it is) and has a gradual impression and the sail goes down to the tip of the tail (I think). If the sail was for storing every, then it would probably not be that big. It could be for intimidation/attraction or regulating body temperature. I don't know if you understand this, but if the sail was to be there just for the sake of making the animal look big, then that wouldn't make sense. It's not a prey item, so that rules it out. There are no other predators bigger than it, actually it dwarfs most carnivores in its area, so that rules it out. If it's big, just for the sake of being big, then natural selection would take that trait out quickly. It has to be worth the energy to keep up with. Like I stated before, it might be there for intimidation/attraction or regulating body temperature. Yes, you're right, aside from Oxalaia, Spinosaurus is the only dinosaur that has a sail that doubles its height. Notice I said dinosaur. It really is a shame Spino's south american cousin, Oxalaia has faded into fossil obscurity (what little remains it had were accidentally destroyed). And its common knowledge that high quality fossils of Spinosaurus were destroyed in WWII moreover it's much smaller relative the Irritator had its skull vandalized when it was first discovered (to make it look bigger). The Spino family has had some terrible luck with getting intact specimens... :(
As of new, recent evidence found in 2024, this video actually shows the best and most accurate representation of the hunting lifestyle of Spinosaurus, excluding the newly discovered parts of its physical anatomy. With the technique of a typical heron or stork; not a highly specialized, aquatic hunter, but actually a shoreline, wading predator.
I was surprised when I first watched this series. I was also amazed to learn that Spinosaurus was a fish-eater like Baryonyx and could swim. That crest impresses me.
Spinosaurus is an awesome dinosaur, perfectly suited to it's lifestyle of eating aquatic creatures in it's aquatic/swampy environment. With that said, anyone still holds to the JP3 mentality of it being the ultimate predator is either unbelievably stubborn in their ignorance, or...no that's pretty much it.
Tyson Sorvig You really need to get common sense. So an animal that eats 3 ton prey (Onchopristis) that's an apex predator itself (btw T. rex also couldn't kill anything larger than itself) is pathetic and weak?
Ain’t it ironic how the behavior of spinosaurus in this 2011 documentary is accurate in 2021 being that the new hone and holtz paper suggests spinosaurus was a wader instead of an aquatic pursuit predator.
Oh hi rex, did not expect to see you here in north africa, anyways yes, I was a wader and sometimes I just swam and ambushed Other dinosaurs, I also once got into a fight with a Charcaradontosaurs and yes, I won but I lost one of my tooth, its inside its neck www.quora.com/q/lzcuflsmugrezuex/Ive-heard-about-a-Spinosaurus-tooth-being-embedded-in-a-Carcharodontosaurus-vertebra-is-it-true-If-it-is-can-I-see-a
Reminds me of getting up early with the sun, waiting for the fog to lift on a calm lake while the light pours in. Getting out the tackle and bait, setting up on your favorite spot and just patiently waiting for a bite in peace. I got a feeling spinosaurus had those same vibes, just in a spinosaurus kinda way.
Just a few weeks ago, a study was released about a new, more complete Spinosaurus fossil they just found. The neural spines on the caudal vertebrae (the bit that sticks upward out of the tail bones) are really tall, so we now think it had a finned, eel-like tail that it used for swimming.
+Fie And they weren't anything alike. Spinosaurus walked on four (perhaps even being a knuckle-walker on its front hands) and lived a more aquatic life. This BBC representation is old, but accurate for its time. Comparing tyrannosaurus with spinosaurus is like comparing a lion to a crocodile: are they on land or in the water?
and complete fiction. We know how much more powerful a T. rex is than a spinosaurus and how big a spinosaurus is. Both would have their hands full but break away from the fight.
@@AceofDlamonds Lemme rephrase it for you, "No dinosaur in Jurassic world is natural, their DNA was edited by adding the DNA of other animals." ~ Henry Wu. It's a movie man, anything can happen in it, the spino was probably genetically modified to be stronger.

T. rex and the "Velociraptor" (Deinonychus) are more or less life sized, but for some reason Spinosaurus was beefed up? No, they were promoting the movie and had spinosaurs in around the ballpark size compared to a T. rex actually in that scene. The genetic modification excuse is just a cover.
@@AceofDlamonds When the movie was made it was believed spinosaurus was bipedal which would definitely make him taller than T.rex, that is why they made it like that. Spino is still half bipedal half quadruped like a bear so I don't have any problem with it's size.

No one should be fighting because t-Rex and spinosaur both dominated no matter what. They lived in different times and they both lived in different environments and JP3 was only a movie but anyway I love both of these dinosaurs no matter how big or small they are
I like to compare T. Rex and Spinosaurus to modern lions and crocodiles. It doesn't matter much who would win, they're both the masters and rulers of their ecosystems; dry land for T. Rex and lions and fish-filled rivers for Spinosaurus and crocodiles.
Guys...GUYS...let's think about this: That fish is 8-meters-long. I looked it up, and 8 meters is equal to *26-feet*. The fish is also a sawfish, which is a type of shark. The Spinosaurus managed to eat a 26-foot-long shark like it was just a California roll!

It's actually explained Spinosaurus was experimented on for 9 months with other genes (hinting at it being a hybrid) in the new Dinosaur Protection Group site!
Just imagine how much could have weighed an 8 meters long sawfish. In order to lift a fish like that, Spinosaur's bite ought to have been extremely strong, regardless of its hunting abits.
that fish was 500 kg. and spinosaurus bite was 2 to 3 tons~2,5 tons, that is indeed a stronge bite but quite poor compared to other carnivirous therapods, especially to tyrannosaridea, and also for its size it was quite weak.

The current material on Spinosaurus renders this depiction inaccurate (at least the size of the legs and the shape of the sail, the behavior and the rest of the anatomy is still probably spot on). But I want to clarify several things since some of the people in these comments seem quite confused. The pressure sensors in its snout are comprised of a neurovascular system of veins and sensors continuing towards the tip of the premaxilla. As the narrator said, they are similar to those seen in Crocodyliforms and are exploited as a means of detecting movement in the water. The function of the dorsal sail is not thermoregulation. For a structure on an animal to be able to control its body temperature, there must be traces of blood vessels within that structure. There is absolutely no trace of blood vessel masses within the dorsal sail of Spinosaurus. So the thermoregulation hypothesis is unlikely. Andrea Cau has proposed that the dorsal neural spines of theropod dinosaurs contain nuche ligaments that would control the craniocervical section and allow the animal to position its neck in specific ways. This function may correlate to the ichthyophagous lifestyles of theropod dinosaurs (this is why most members of spinosauridae possess dorsal sails.). This feature is also present in Deinocheirus as indicated by the new material. Source : theropoda.blogspot.com/2014/10/deinocheirus-revolution-episodio-5.html?m=1 (Make sure your browser has a "translate page" option, as Andrea Cau blogs in Italian.)
Is it true that there might be an error in the scaling of the legs? At paleontologist Mark Witton's blog, I read that the legs could have been longer (not long enough to make Spino a biped though, at least not fully) and that National Geographic may have used the lower estimate to make the discovery more sensational. By the way, thanks for pointing out the muscle attachment thing! Too many people still believe the sail was used for thermoregulation. Your comments on these vids are highly appreciated!
P.S: Is it already proven that Deinocheirus' sail was used for muscle attachment? If so, damn was that fast! XD. I just wish the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology would publish a paper on the 'new' Deinocheirus, but I'm still waiting.
Paco Martos As far as the reduced hind limb length is concerned, Nizar Ibrahim and Simone Maganuco have been quite professional in responding to Scott Hartman and Mark Witton's posts. Their responses are quite convincing and they seem to confirm the hind limb length. Even if a slight scaling error is discovered, it probably won't make the legs that much longer (a few extra centimeters, if any). Surprisingly, Spinosaurus may still be capable of waking as a biped. Andrea Cau has proposed that the dorsal neural spines contain nuche ligaments that control the craniocervical section (head an neck) of the body, and the animal would be able to raise its neck upright. This in turn would shift the center of gravity towards the posterior by a good margin and the animal could function as a biped despite the disproportionately short legs. In fact, a short legged Spinosaurus walking as a biped with its neck held upright would actually be reminiscent of a duck or a pelican. I'll post a source in my next comment.
And concerning Deinocheirus, it hasn't been confirmed that the dorsal neural spines function as muscle attachment. The idea was just proposed by Andrea Cau (and I'll admit, it makes a hell lot of sense).
The thing that amazes me about the spinosaurus is that it's species was in the grand scheme of things so close to avoiding the extinction of dinosaurs. It's evolution as a species had clearly been travelling in a more aquatic direction and given time it could if fully converted just like the ancestors of mosasaurus. But due to natural global warming its naturally swamp environment became desert and it unfortunately couldn't adapt to the change I environment fast enough
No it's just that the spino wasn't actually going in that direction it wasn't becoming aquatic it was a fish hunter, that tail didn't evolve for swimming it was for display
With all the comments on how T-Rex shouldn't lose to Spinosaurus has anyone ever thought about the environment in where they fought I mean on solid land the T-Rex may be dominant but near water the tide may change (no pun intended). I mean if the Spinosaurus is any thing like the crocodiles they relate to I'm sure he would use similar tactics such as drowning prey that had more of an advantage on land. I mean looking at his teeth they are more built for holding onto prey while ripping at them with his claws it makes sense that he would use this tactic to drown his prey faster.
Bro, Spinosaurus would literally DESTROY T-Rex, everyone that says "T-rEx cOuLd eAsiLY dEfEaT a SpInoSaUrUs" is bullshit, those people Literally underestimate the size and strength of Spinosaurus. People who say that are absolute retards and know nothing about Spinosaurus.
Great documentary, pity it came out before a lot of the great scientific revelations about Spinosaurus. The newer reconstructions show a much more unique and interesting animal. Hopefully a new, big budget one will be made soon.
actually this is more optimal because spinosaurus would only eat the most nutrient rich parts of the fish such as the liver and eggs to get the most out of the feeding season just like grizzly bears during salmon runs.
Justin Ruim Thats true, but there's also another thing, grabbing fish is also probably fun for Spinosaurus, which is why I can see it repeating it over and over if it could. Hunting was probably one of all predator dinosaurs favorite activity, after mating and resting perhaps, though a T Rex hunting a Triceratops swinging its horns might be more focused than enjoying the hunt.
micronesia2 Agreed, on the last part at least. Spinosaurus isn't in any real danger from an Onchopristis, they'd likely run rather than fight. Spinosaurus is almost twice their length and triple their weight. Triceratops however, is a much different matter. Triceratops may have been shorter than T. rex in length and height, but it was still able to do damage, not to mention it weighed more or less the same (8-12 tons vs 9 tons for T. rex). It also had a nasty defence and offence. On the other hand however, in the dry season where it _may_ have to scavenge and fight for it's food, then I can see Spinosaurus not enjoying it as much as it should.

The dinosaur's surroundings make it seem smaller, it's quite impressive how big spinosaurus really was
It really is a shame Spino's south american cousin, Oxalaia has faded into fossil obscurity (what little remains it had were accidentally destroyed).
And its common knowledge that high quality fossils of Spinosaurus were destroyed in WWII moreover it's much smaller relative the Irritator had its skull vandalized when it was first discovered (to make it look bigger).
The Spino family has had some terrible luck with getting intact specimens... :(

I’ve read just today that paleontologists in Morocco found a nearly complete tail of Spinosaurus,, there’s still hope.

Tyson Sorvig Oh yeah, a T-Rex would have killed Spinosaur with one or two bites based of bite pressure per square inch and overall weight.
rgbsax I doubt spinosaurus even had a bite pressure remotely similar to trex.
Now that it's been agreed upon that Spino was a quadruped, I think this debate is becoming less and less supportive for Spino.
Tyson Sorvig You really need to get common sense. So an animal that eats 3 ton prey (Onchopristis) that's an apex predator itself (btw T. rex also couldn't kill anything larger than itself) is pathetic and weak?
Bk Jeong Spino was suited to it's niche, nothing more.
Ain’t it ironic how the behavior of spinosaurus in this 2011 documentary is accurate in 2021 being that the new hone and holtz paper suggests spinosaurus was a wader instead of an aquatic pursuit predator.

@@ansh6370
That's a convenient trick. But actually is a cover for artistic license they've taken for their movie. But it's difficult to claim artistic license for something that has factual grounds. T. rex and the "Velociraptor" (Deinonychus) are more or less life sized, but for some reason Spinosaurus was beefed up? No, they were promoting the movie and had spinosaurs in around the ballpark size compared to a T. rex actually in that scene. The genetic modification excuse is just a cover.
@@AceofDlamonds
When the movie was made it was believed spinosaurus was bipedal which would definitely make him taller than T.rex, that is why they made it like that. Spino is still half bipedal half quadruped like a bear so I don't have any problem with it's size.

The Judge of the Dead a.k.a King Minos Yep. Those are fish that we need to lift with steel aircraft cable.
that fish was 500 kg. and spinosaurus bite was 2 to 3 tons~2,5 tons, that is indeed a stronge bite

Source : theropoda.blogspot.com/2014/10/deinocheirus-revolution-episodio-5.html?m=1
(Make sure your browser has a "translate page" option, as Andrea Cau blogs in Italian.)
Spino was actually a manlet. JP3 had us fooled.
This brings back so many memories

I've always LOVED the Spinosaurus, man. Ever since I've seen it kill a T-Rex in Jurassic Park 3. 😊😊😊😊😊
Actually did would not become like the mosasaur , it was just not aquatic and probably was not a good swimmer at all
@@Antonov-225 I'm saying it was moving in that direction. They went extinct before they got there

"With prey plentiful, spinosaurus could afford to be wasteful"......................I can totally see why they eventually went extinct.
actually this is more optimal because spinosaurus would only eat the most nutrient rich parts of the fish such as the liver and eggs to get the most out of the feeding season just like grizzly bears during salmon runs.
Justin Ruim Thats true, but there's also another thing, grabbing fish is also probably fun for Spinosaurus, which is why I can see it repeating it over and over if it could. Hunting was probably one of all predator dinosaurs favorite activity, after mating and resting perhaps, though a T Rex hunting a Triceratops swinging its horns might be more focused than enjoying the hunt.
micronesia2 That is simply a wild guess of yours
micronesia2 Agreed, on the last part at least.
This video is so nostalgic.
Favorite dinosaur it looks like a bodybuilder lol
