Alden didn't suck, he was okay and made the role his own while staying true to the character. And that comes from a guy, who hated the choice. But i am and always will be a die hard Ingruber fanboy, they should've cast him, there isn't any discussion about that. Costa on the other hand reminds me too much of Robin Williams.

All they care about AFAIK, is that Star Wars makes more than most Marvel Movies and the DCEU movies so far.
The irony is, if they REALLY want Star Wars to make more than the MCU, then they have to produce Star Wars movies that the fans will actually SEE and enjoy. The reason TLJ did so badly relative to TFA was because very few fans went back for repeat viewings. Good God, I mean, watching TLJ was like listening to nails on a chalkboard, so one viewing was more than enough. By the end of the movie, I was actually rooting for the tie fighters to shoot down Rey.
If people saw Anthony Ingruber playing young Han Solo they would say it's CGI.

He was a horrible choice, when i saw the first trailer, i couldn't believe that this was the guy, im 46 and was instantly let down, Han is my favorite character, i was interested in the movie until i saw the trailer, now ive seen the movie, and the new kids height difference really stands out to me, not to mention he looks and sounds nor acts anything like him.

Alden Ehrenreich is NOT Han Solo. There was one man for the job. ONE. And that was Anthony Ingruber. Ehrenreich only got in 'cause connections to Kathleen Kennedy. This movie is so horribly miscast, I won't be seeing it. They basically pissed on a character I've loved for 40 years.

I am a Star Wars collector (posters, droids, figures, toys, etc.) - but this is the last straw, in my opinion 'The Last Jedi' ruined the whole Star Wars (universe) saga beyond repair... (no interest in TLJ merchandise or characters).

I agree. I'm a huge Star Wars fan and I have no desire to see anyone play Han Solo other than Harrison Ford. Ford and Solo are a package deal. So be it (Jedi).
The guy they picked for SOLO(the first one who auditioned) looks more like Daisy Ridley than Harrison Ford. 3000 auditions? That was just a smoke screen to keep folks from thinking this guy was not somehow a ringer for this part. Casting Anthony Ingruber, who is a Star Wars fan HARRISON FORD LOOK ALIKE FAVORITE, would have taken this movie to the next level simply because most of the fans + newcomers would have put the stamp of approval on him. Shame on you Disney for ruining the chance of a lifetime to bring the STAR WARS legacy back to full stature.

I've read about fellow cast-members and crew who worked on the film saying he's really just a terrible actor. His performance was so bad they apparently hired an on-set acting coach to help him "understand" the character... Yikes...
Runi - The acting coach story is likely being blown out of proportion. Firstly, the source of the commentary is not highly credible. Secondly, the acting coach was allegedly brought on for the entire cast. Thirdly, even if this was just for Alden acquiring an acting coach doesn't necessarily signal that their performance was awful or that they were struggling.
I'm not defending the movie, I think it'll be mediocre at best. However, I think that story you're citing is unfair to use as a measure for prejudgment.
Arctic022 I understand your point, of course it wouldn't be fair to rip on the guy just for the sake of schadenfreude. I think bringing in an acting coach during production is actually not unusual at all, but bringing one in that late in production probably is. The article I read was from the Hollywood Reporter, it was very detailed and mentioned Disney brought in writer-director Maggie Kiley (21 Jump Street) to coach Ehrenreich, specifically
Look, I'm not a cynic who jumped on the "let's all hate Star Wars now" train (even though watching TLJ did make me want to scratch my eyes out with a rusty nail...), so frankly I'd also rather see him give a great performance and prove everyone wrong. But I've only seen him give a somewhat jarring performance playing a bad actor in a "movie within a movie", and it didn't help it was in the worst Coen brothers feature to date. And from the reactions the trailer has been getting he's obviously not very good at mimicking Harrison Ford's voice, style, or mannerisms, ergo people just don't seem to buy him as a young Han Solo.
So that all kinda speaks to the validity of the acting-coach story, IMO.
The Hail Cesar comment is purely subjective. I'd argue it is probably middle tier Coen Bro's with films like Ladykillers, True Gritt, and Burn After Reading being worse. That being said, his performance there wasn't of a bad actor, it was of a bad dramatic actor and the parts no associated with that were decent from what I recall. If we want to talk about bad actors involved in this film, we should be talking about Emilia Clarke.
Hiring an acting coach this late is mildly unusual. Because the film basically was hit with a reboot, the context surrounding it makes this more smoke than fire for me. Also, I haven't found any Hollywood Reporter article that suggests the cast and crew thought Ehrenreich was a terrible actor. The most damning evidence is merely, that the executives at Lucasfilm were "not entirely satisfied with the performance that the directors (Lord & Miller) were eliciting." However, there are several issues with this statement: 1) this information is being provided by the writer and is not a quote from a source, and 2) it focuses on the direction as well as the acting so it's difficult to tease one out from the other. Furthermore, they never list a source for any of the information in this piece outside of "insiders," and without a clear source, it isn't the most credible bit of information. I recall reading an article in the past where an "actor" from the set was revealing how Ehrenreich was "not bad but not good enough." However, this "actor" gave inconsistent information with what we know actually occurred and has largely been discredited. Ehrenreich did an interview himself recently and explained that the coach actually wasn't involved much as they were, "part of conversations that happened for a couple weeks at one point, but that was basically it."
Overall, I don't know how his performance will go. I get the vibe they're going to try to make him evolve into the Han Solo we know now (i.e., with his mannerisms, viewpoints, etc.). I personally don't think that'll work, nor do I really care to see it (or even a Han Solo prequel in general), but I think people are being unfair to Ehrenreich. The potential failure of this film is a collective and executive failure moreso than an individual actor's. But who knows, maybe it'll be good.
Jack Black would have been a better choice than this guy...

Absolutely agree. What they did to Luke Skywalker was disgusting -- and what they did to _Mark Hamill himself_ was even more heart-wrenching. Have you seen video of him after The Last Jedi premier? He looks shell-shocked and on the border of tears. I don't think even HE knew how much of Luke's dignity and integrity they were planning on stealing. And I don't think Hamill knew they were going to kill him off, either. Frankly, Kathleen Kennedy seems to revel in hurting other people for no reason at all (beyond pushing her agenda) -- which is, by my definition of the word, outright evil.

Jon Kazdan claim on Twitter that they both audition but Ehrenreich “Won” the part.
However on Twitter, Alden Ehrenreich So Happens to be friends with Steven Spielberg’s daughter and meet each other at a part.
Ehrenreich was recommend by Spielberg.

People keep claiming that Ewan McGregor playing Obi-Wan in the prequels that all of these facts are "invalid" even though they have similar bone structures and Ewan was actually good at doing the impressions/face movements. My biggest problem with the new guy is the fact his face isn't even a similar shape.
McGregor did a FANTASTIC job capturing Guiness' essence and I think a lot of people will agree with that and hope he comes back for an Obi Wan stand alone. And yeah that was what stuck out to me at first too. He looks nothing like Han its so bad lol

Many are not happy with this actor choice regardless if he's a good actor or not, I never said he wasn't a good actor. I was born in '74 and saw the original Star Wars in the theaters 10 times with my dad. I was disappointed that Force Awakens was just a pretty reboot. Absolutely disgusted with Last Jedi. So seeing them pick the absolute WRONG actor doesn't surprise me at all. I am NOT looking forward to seeing Solo at all. Disney did it right with Rogue One but other than that, the disappointment is getting worse with each movie.

Alden is an ok actor, but not meant for this role. They should have cast Anthony Ingruber. It would have been more convincing. It's red box for me. No more dropping 150 bucks at the theater to take my family to see disney star wars, it just isn't worth it anymore.

Alden is NO Han Solo. He just doesn't have the attitude of Anthony Ingruber. He amazed me in the Age of Adeline! As another commenter wrote, I thought they had de-aged Harrison using CGI in that movie at first! He was just that good - and could act. He's certainly not just an impersonator. The guy that played Lando did a great job but Han just wasn't right. I mean, the timeline isn't that long before the original Star Wars and his character is just totally flat. He could pass for the 'son of Han' but not Han himself. If you are going to play the slightly younger version of an iconic character played by another actor - you HAVE to look like them, sound like them and have their mannerisms down pat! Reboots are different - this not a reboot. Would have been such a different movie with Ingruber as Han :(

I’m sure he is a decent enough actor to not just do a Harrison Ford impression too. Ehrenrich I’m sure is talented but he just doesn’t portray Han to me. It’s like a cosplay movie. That being said I don’t think they could have gotten a better Lando than Donald Glover. I think he will be a highlight of the film.
I totally wanted to see Anthony Ingruber play him: All he needed was a little coaching and he'd have been flawless. Disney left Star Wars in the hands of a generation of lazy hacks and SJW dimwits who can't handle short timelines to work with --- so it's no wonder it bombed hard. Solo wasn't even a horrible movie, but it certainly wasn't a fraction of what it could have been. The Last Jedi played an equally devastating role in setting up Solo for failure, given its horrific storytelling, amateurish directing, and moral grandstanding. But it didn't stop there: That fucking droid... Lando's toaster oven sexbot... At first I thought she was a joke. I actually laughed at a number of her scenes because I thought it was a parody of an hysterical SJW shrew, but then they announced that Lando was indeed a robot-humping lunatic and that they were serious the whole time.... What a fucking disaster... Even fan made films handled SW better than this.

Jamie Costa's fan film was amazing - I've seen his Robin Williams impressions and was amazed, but never thought about him as Solo... UNYIL I saw that film. He was amazing.
But the moment I saw Anthony Ingruber in The Age of Adeline, I *knew* there was nobody else who could or should ever play a young Han Solo. Talk about born for the role - he's even mastered the lopsided grin and the mutter.
Hey, Michael Jae - great video! Yes, I'm one of the fans who saw the OT in theaters when each film first came out, and they were all so mind-blowing. There was an advantage to no internet; we weren't spoiled before learning who Luke's REAL father was, for example. But you are spot on about Alden Ehrenreich not being a good fit, and for all the reasons you mentioned: looks, voice, stature, so-so acting ability. I understand them wanting to cast relatively unknown, younger actors here - which is exactly what Lucas did for the three main protagonists. If Alden was just playing a supporting role - like maybe a cousin of Han Solo, well, ok, as we've never seen that character before.
To use an actor to play such an iconic character - even at a different age from the OT - who bears NO resemblance whatsoever to Harrison Ford, who MADE Han Solo such a great character, makes NO sense to me (BTW: Ford was around 35 when "A New Hope" came out). I would say this about ANY film, so I'm not just picking on "Soylo". So thank you for also bringing to the fore the GREAT Anthony Ingruber and Jaime Costa! If EITHER one of those guys would've been cast as Han Solo, Oh, HELL YEAH I'd be interested in seeing "SOLO"!! But with the way Disney & Lucasfilms have so blatantly disrespected us older fans - or any fans who dislike the new trilogy, for that matter - I don't think they deserve my patronage and I'll stick with SW Eps. 1-6, Rogue One, and The Clone Wars series. Besides - how good can a film be from the same studios that put out The Force (Farce) Awakens and The Last Jedi?
Finally, as a woman of some mixed racial heritage, I DARE anyone to call ME "racist", "sexist", "misogynistic", etc. Me, I'm a common-sense conservative who has NO problem with good male characters or men in general; I LOVE 'em. I also have no problem with GOOD female characters or women in general, either. This toxic, illogical, stupid militant SJW agenda is polluting our culture more & more each day, in all walks of life. So Disney & Lucasfilm, drop the damn smoke-and-mirrors approach to bashing your critics and insulting our intelligence: you ain't foolin' us! Most of us who HATED TLJ (and to a lesser extent, TFA) did so for one very big, important reason: the characters and the storyline totally STUNK! Period!

Definitely. I think Disney is trying to reboot SW into something else, something that Lucas couldn't foresee since his relationship with the company has been such a long process.
I've been saying this all along. But this just proves Disney doesn't give a fuck about the fans and they still don't. They gonna force us (no pun intended) to watch these movies just becuz they have STAR WARS on them. If fans can cast these movies better than Hollywood, then Hollywood has a real problem. They need to listen to us, we're the ones making THEM money. They need to actually have REAL auditions for these characters and not just "pick the first guy who walks into the room". And they also need to stop firing directors. For a billion dollar company they act very unprofessional and immature. I'm not going to see SOYLO or any of this Disney Star Wars bullshit.

Real Starwars fans all agree: Original 6 and Extended Universe are canon, Disney is not.
I really didn't like the Yuzan Vong or the way they killed Chewie in the expanded universe. None the less the canon they threw out, like Thrawn's Empire, Mara Jade, Ben Skywalker, Aniken Solo and the Twins... There was so much exelent content to pull from like the Tales of Han Solo trilogy. Ugh they messed up big time losing the expanded universe.
They didn't just mess up, they killed the spirit of the series and at least in my eyes; ended the story. I look at the Disney films as more of fan films if that makes sense, though admittedly it's mostly so I can just be not angry that future kids won't get to experience "real starwars" if that makes sense. They'll see a giant pile of mediocre disney films and wonder why it was ever so popular in the first place.
A lot of Star Wars fans are mainly fans only of the original 3 because since then none of them really got it right.

If Disney's SW efforts so far are anything to go by, they probably picked the actor who they thought would upset the fans the most.
Alden has worked with huge name directors and been nominated for awards for his acting. He also resembles Ford in his early 20s as he is playing Han in his early 20s. Ford was 34 when he first played Han so the big problem from the start is that people expect someone playing Han at 20 to look and act like Han at 34. Also... Kennedy has made 7 movies with Harrison Ford and the most successful producer ever. No other producer has made more money or been involved in producing more hit movies in the past 37 years. It's why Lucas handpicked her. Lawrence Kasden has written the scripts for 4 of Fords biggest movies, knows Han better than nearly anyone but Ford and Lucas. But what do they know? But fans know best right. Cast the no name RUclips impersonator with little acting experience.
Anthony Ingruber for Solo! Jamie Costa would be good too, but alas it wasn't to be. I absolutely refuse to see Solo, now or ever. I saw Star Wars when it first came out as a kid. Han was always my favorite, next to R2 of course.
Yeah Alden was shit and I love him in other movies. It should have absolutely been Anthony Ingruber, they had him literally at their fingertips and squandered it. It would have been absolutely surreal. The other guy is too much like Robin Williams. But Anthony would have been just completely surreal, the word of mouth would have been amazing. And I will never forgive them for it and laugh at how much it's flopping and I hope they regret their casting.

As an old school fan who grew up with these movies in the 80’s, I’ve been saying for years that Ingruber would be perfect for young Han. The complaint I keep hearing about him is that “he’s not an actor”. Like, really? He played a young Harrison Ford in a movie already, and considering that the current actor needed an acting coach on set, why not go with the guy who actually looks, sounds and acts like Han? Even if his acting wasn’t that great, at least Ingruber would have had people excited for Solo. Besides, since when has bad acting kept anyone out of a Star Wars movie?

That Ehrenreich dude - they even hide him in the trailiers as much as possible, cause he does not even remotely remind one of Han, the only Thing Han about him ist the clothes they have him wear and Chewie beside him. They could have given that to Ingruber too.

In fact, I believe they purposely choose to do the opposite of what real Star Wars fans want most of the time now.
