I stated after I bought my 41mm Tudor Ranger that I would buy a new Tudor Ranger if they would only make it in a 38-39mm version. My local Tudor AD has had squat when it comes to any newer (2022) models. When Tudor announced the new Ranger in 39mm I really wanted to like it. And I did sort of, but had never seen one in person and had only Tudor and watch reviews to look at to make any determination.
Fast forward to 3 days ago and I'm at Heathrow airport in London awaiting my flight back to the US. Like any watch geek I go over to the Watches of Switzerland shop in the International terminal and finally have a chance to actually see the new Tudor Ranger. They had just one with bracelet. I'd love to tell you that I fell in love with it at first sight but I think I was too busy figuring out the exchange rates and thinking about getting home. But I pulled the trigger, bagged up the watch, and brought it home. Finally yesterday I got it on wrist. And you know, I think I love this watch.
Even I had some reservations about this Ranger before putting it on wrist. You know, the empty space on the dial, the faux patina thing, and a couple other things reviewers had talked about. But this Ranger just works. Then I started thinking about this watch and the dial. In my mind it sort of reminds me of the Rolex Explorer 1016; just bigger and brawnier. And I really like that look. So I would say don't pass judgement on this watch till you have it on wrist. Oh and by the way, with the strong US Dollar to the British Pound it worked out to about $2,600.

The field book idea is absolutely brilliant. I think a NATO included would have been great too (See the Pelagos including a rubber dive strap in the box). Tudor, pay these people for doing your marketing job. I can see the case for a "Chronometer Officially Certified" (2 lines) on the dial, but I'd want to see it first. The AD I've been in to since that came out didn't have one in stock, so I haven't seen it in person. My issue is the color of the lume doesn't look quite right to me. I love the fauxtina lume on the Black Bay Pro, and the slightly different Black Bay 58 creamy lume. I think Tudor nails it better than anybody on the fauxtina. I think they just missed here. I would also love to see that printing turned into the 3D lume of the Black Bay Pro. I think the 39 is a great size (for me) though. The 41mm Ranger would have fit, but was maybe a bit more than necessary for a field watch (don't get me started on the non-fitted bracelet end links). I don't think there is a shortage of big watches for guys that want those, so I think the increased availability of smaller watches is great for those that are smaller, or just prefer that.
I'm a tall guy, and 34 or 36 just wouldn't work on me like it does on some people. Sure, I could wear 36mm dress watch, but I rarely need a dress watch. I haven't had anything even as small as 36mm for 30 years, well before the big watch trend. Even back then, it was 38-40mm. I love a good 38 like the Seiko SBP155 Alpinist, but on me 38/39 looks like 36 does on a lot of other people. I've seen it literally stated in RUclips comments that any guy wearing bigger than 36 is compensating. Do you tell any guy wearing bigger than a small t-shirt that actually fits their body that they're compensating? No. Different size watches fit different size wrists/statures. The sub has been in the 40mm range for basically even longer than I've been alive. Classic sizes are classic for a reason. I think the small watch trend will be just that, a trend like the big watch trend. Watches appropriately sized and somewhere in the middle are always going to look great.

I think of the Ranger as a field watch that an army Ranger might wear. In that sense it gives you the time in a very easy and fast to view dial. Seems like more text would reduce the effect of that intent. I 100% agree that a field notebook should come with the watch!

Visited a Tudor boutique 6 months ago hoping to purchase either:
    1) FXD
    2) BB Pro
    3) Pelagos 39
I tried a Ranger just for the heck of it… and ended up connecting with the Ranger far more than the original 3 I was considering. I was totally shocked as I had wanted the FXD for over a year…

It's true these watches are better in person.
It's hard to listen to a couple Itty bitty little dudes say the new Ranger should be 36mm is a little bit self serving, because that would be too small for me. 39mm? Would probably work for most people and that's why they changed the size. Interestingly, my local Tudor AD said when I mentioned the new smaller sizes that "most people still bought the larger Tudors"
I actually wouldn't be terribly surprised to find out that Rolexes return to 36mm on the Explorer wasn't as successful as anticipated.

Great subject. Today I would never wear anything above 40 mm. 25 years ago my first Breitling was 42 mm but I was also 24 at the time so that´s what size reflects. A bigger sized watch exposes your natural lack of wisdom and genuine self esteem. 34 to 37 mm however is an excellent size to complement yourself on having reached a level of maturity that doesn´t need anyone´s approval and the cases and dials are usually more well proportioned & well balanced too. That Cartier is f*ckin amazing. A stone col killa'...

I'm watching a couple of videos about the ranger and it makes me laugh. I mean, come on. This watch is so cheap for what it offers. In house movement, automatic, 70hr power reserve, sapphire glass, great bracelet, antimagnet, COSC certified, said by tudor to be actually more accurate than COSC requirements, antimagnetic, 100 meters, thin. 3000 bucks (plus discounts). Come on. There are a lot of ETA movement watches that go for more money. This is such a steal compared to similar watches, compare it to an acquaterra for 6000$! This is "Nomos" territory of "I can't believe it's that cheap" but with a form factor that actually matches current fashion (and yet is still it's not a sub). And from Tudor, not a semi-unknown company. AND on a model with actual deep heritage. Come on, it's a steal.

I think the ranger certainly should be improved in the next years and it is a missed opportunity to not launch it as a second line next to the BB. Make the BB Pro thinner and call it Ranger Pro and add an early Rolex Chrono inspired piece (maybe a modernised Oyster Chronograph ref. 4080) and you have a nice complete lineup with time only, GMT and Chrono next to the BB.

As a continuation of the point about watch sizes and “masculinity”. It baffles me that we continue to perpetuate this ideology and correlation between masculinity and larger sized items. I believe you can distinguish far greater masculinity through an individuals confidence rather than through oversized material object. E.g Christian and the Cartier he wore, it takes genuine masculinity, confidence and style (in todays society) to wear and pull that off… and he does.

I bought a Tudor Ranger a month ago for MSRP. It had just come in and I got the only one. I like the minimalist watch-face/dial and big arabic numerals. As a field watch you'd want it to be easy to read! However, after all- it [the Ranger] is just a high-end but basic field watch that happens to be COSC at a decent price. An elaborate dial would clash with the stylish rugged simplicity of the Ranger as well as adding $$$ to the price. Consider that the Rolex Explorer isn't much more "fancy" but retails at more than twice the price. I like my Rolexes but am really impressed with certain Tudor models. I plan to add more.

The chunky case of the modern Explorer is significantly less attractive than the early, sleek oyster cases that gave the Explorer an elegant feeling. It was the gentleman's field watch (and the original Bond watch, while we're on that point).
The face proportions are also off now, with the scrunched, chunky numerals in that increasingly dated typeface (they scream 90s/early 00s "sporty"). I was on the market for this style of watch and went for Longines Spirit 37mm, I believe it has much more personality. This Ranger release was in the right time but I was disappointed with how it looks. There is also something about Tudor's 39mm releases looking too similar to each other, having one BB58 don't really want to get another clone.

@@muzjikstb I'm receiving mine hopefully next week but I tried at AD and it looked perfect on my 16.5cm wrist, felt much lighter than BB58 and the glass was like invisible on a black dial. Their 40mm models felt too big for me and not as refined.

Maybe take the watch out on an adventure, then the purposes of some of the design features will become more apparent.
With regards to the 'idea of masculinity being defined by the size of a watch'... erm, no. Being confident enough to wear what you want - whether large or small faced watch' - is far more masculine than bowing to the peer pressure of 'alpha wannabes' suggesting that wearing a big watch shows 'manliness'. Don't be a sheep. Wear what you like, what you enjoy, what suits you and your purpose, and wear it with pride.

Even pilots watches weren’t all that large by today’s standards. The massive B Uhr Observation watches measuring around 55mm were worn by the navigators of the German aircraft. The pilot wore a chronograph which was hacked to the navigator’s watch. Those pilot watches were easily under 40mm.

I gotta say, that whole discussion about masculinity regarding watch sizes is utter nonsense. YET, there is an almost mathematically explicit size/aspect ratio of a watch to each wearers' wrist that looks good. Everything that is too much over or under that ratio does not. Seeing your wrist not being the largest, anything from 36 to 39 mil. should fit amazing. Anything under just doesn't look as good, regardless of the watch type imo. If you like a more refined, maybe jeweled, dress watch, just pick it in that perfect size for your wrist, even if the original was 34 mil or whatever. Original doesn't always mean best, just because it came first.

Tudor is the low budget strategy from rolex, they don't wanna put tudor as the same level of rolex, they wanna keep tudor in the price range of $2k to $5k, that's tudor market, they already have rolex at the other end, so buying this strategy, u are also falling on rolex plan, they make money or either on your " best value tudor concept" or "I made it in life paying 2 or 3 times a retail price of a rolex ", either way u are feeding the same cow.

Have to jump in to defend the Cartier Tank. I’m no bodybuilder but I’m a decent sized guy that can lift more than at least 98% of the people on this planet. The Tank is a classic. Put the person who left that comment next to me wearing a Cartier and then decide who the actual beta is. I think we all know the answer.
