Im from the Ivory Coast so i'll try to explain the origin of all that. The mask is called Zaouli, after Lou Zaouli (meaning daughter of zaouli). She was the daughter of the village chief and rumored to be the most beautiful girl of her time. That's why the mask is painted with feminine, colorful features. They created the mask as homage to her beauty.
Thank you for that explanation. I love this dance. Is it traditionally a man under the mask? It would make sense either way.

It's amazing how perfect the synchronisation between the dancer and drummer is, it's as if they are actually connected like two parts of the same being, the split second pauses and changes in the foot movements and beats are flawlessly synchronised with the hand drum, incredible.
Fun fact: Most dancers follow the beat of the drum. But here, the drummer follows the dancer’s lead.
