Hi Sifu Sergio. I practise WT (tam han fan lineage) I was taught that this kick is for the medial ligament (side) and not towards the patella (front of knee). If you step to the outstide and kick the opponents front leg you still have a pretty good shot a damaging the medial ligament. particularly if you are using it as a shock while you working upstairs at the same time.
I believe this is a good point. However, a kick to the knee could injure, hyper extend, or even break their leg. But he is right, kicking the femur is a waste of time.
Furthermore, its far more easy to score a low leg kick than a hand attack. A lot of fighters are not used 2them & present targets without defense. They also put weight on them, thus cant move until they are de-weighted..which by then,is 2Late.This is why WC puts all the mass over the rear leg..2b able to kick & defend kicks at any split seconds timeframe. The kick should be jab fast, very hard to even detect,(esp cause its low) but hits like a sledgehammer. Often called a no-shadow kick.
Excellent analysis and explanation! Wing Chun is extremely effective, but only if taught and trained properly. 1st video of yours I have watched. Definitely not the last! The Wing Chun school I attend in Seattle Washington is also like this.
I've practiced Pencak Silat for years with the same technique, kicking from the front on the knee. If you do it right it can stop an advancing opponent very effectively. They never had wooden dummies in Indonesia, so that's not the reason there. They also do it from the back, depending on the situation.
Henk van Mierlo do you do the front kick or downward kick onto top of knee from front? Because he said a front kick with that shape was better but not preferred
yep, make sense. even kicking from the side, whether its inside or outside the knee joint, would be more logical than doing it from a frontal position.
That shape with the foot, is it not used to stamp through the knee cap to break the leg? With the toes turned out gives more of a contact patch to hit the target? ???
The likelihood of that happening is very low. A low leg sweeping kick to the shin would be much more effective. Proper timing of that kick could and most likely will break the shin. But to agree with other comments here, it is a devastating kick when applied to the side of the knee. My lineage ( Leung Yi Tai, Leung Chan, Yip Man, Duncan Leung) uses that as both a back and side knee kick. It's also a great set up if used against the inside knee of the outer leg of your attacker setting up a sweep to the leg closest to you for a rapid and devastating break/take down
Jon Jones instill fear in UFC fighters using this kick. From whatever angle towards the knee you throw this kick if it lands it will do damage and thats what counts in a fight.
Kicking a non-movable target, isnt about looking tough. Its called Conditioning & Internal Strength! Not only does the foot need it..but also, the entire internal pathway inside your body. Its the same reason WC punches sand bags mounted to concrete walls. If u punch with only ur arm & kick only with ur leg, then u are Not doing proper WC. Its not wise to threaten someone u know nothing about.also shows ur lack of self control, the cornerstone of a good & experienced artist.
Furthermore, It also shows ur ignorance, to think u can easily get by long kick range, short kick range, and both lead and rear hands, to be able to deliver an eye strike. Sorry, but you just dont have reality based experience. The stuff Ive done, has been tested on skilled artists, whom were up to and over 2x my mass. And much greater strength. The kick is deadly effective IF its trained correctly.

Excellent instruction. All the best from Wing Chun in Chicago. -Dominick Izzo

Thank you for sharing this and putting back the correct application of that kick technique.

you can also use it in a frontal way in a real situation and is very efective
This kick was ment for behind the leg. My shifu told me this. The wall cannot be moved around. The fixed dummy In the ground can be circled.
Thanks for clearing that up
