    Addding in the moss is a good idea, because it adds hiding spaces for the fry as well as infusoria and aufwuchs growing on the moss as food for the fry. Those bleeding heart platies look stunning. I wonder what across between them and a sunset platy would look like.

    Dear Daniel:
    I sure would have loved to have one of these when I was breeding livebearers in grade and high school. I had an awful time using straws to run refreshing water from hang-on-the-back filters into fry nets and internal, floating breeder-boxes. This product looks like a lot of fun. I'm pleased to see that you are having great success with it. I especially appreciate your putting a bag around the box to keep the female from getting stressed and your fixing the bubbling with a sponge.
    I did notice that you installed the false bottom upside down. The idea is that livebearer fry tend to fall when they come out of the female and would be corralled to the slit in the center of the false bottom (shaped live a "V") and fall through where they are unlikely to swim back into the area where the female can devour them. I see that you got many healthy fry, so this doesn't appear to have been much of an issue.
    Thank you for giving us a close look at this, tremendous product.
    All my best,
    Sincerely,
    E. J. Brinegar

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  5 лет назад +1

      Yeah I realised that about the false bottom bud. I wanted to create more space underneath so I could add the moss for them to take cover in.
      Some of the fry still fell through to the bottom and I think I saved most of the fry but you're right I should have explained that out.
      Thanks E. J. 👍

    Oh Dan you reminded me of my breeding days. I used to use the air pipe for the flow of fresh water. It was mental as to how quickly n often these fish breed. I had 1 pair in a planted tank in just months I had 20 running around. At one point I didn't rescue the babies I let nature do it's job. Sometimes those decisions sounds heartless. You can't blame nature can u :). As always an awesome n well explained videos. Old days were Fun j had to think out of the box now it's all too easy n no fun

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  5 лет назад +1

      I know what you mean. I like to do a wee bit of tinkering and figuring out problems myself but you have to admit these breeder boxes are pretty neat.
      Normally I don't rescue fry myself. If any survive they are the cleverest and strongest to do so as is nature's way but none of the fry from these survive in this tank and I really want to have a few more of them. Seems senseless to go buy some when I have a free supply and it turned into a nice wee project that I enjoyed too and was able to share with you guys.

    Daniel, thanks so much for this. A few your back when I restarted the hobby I had a Dwarf Gourami getting bullies. I bought a breeder box but it was an in-tank one and it made things worse as all the fish came to look. At the time the LFS only had the one.

      Sorry to hear about your Dwarf Gourami. The story ended up alright for him.

    I love this style breeder box! I have two big 1/2 gal ones going right now. They have so many uses. I use it for baby fry, acclimating new fish, timeout for bullies or bullied fish, storing media to seed another tank, java moss and plants.. I could go on and on lol they r great to have with so many uses. Everyone should have one! Or two 👍

  • @sharpiesfishandphantoms
    @sharpiesfishandphantoms 5 лет назад +2

    Platies rock but i was having the opposite problem with both them and guppies, ie reproducing far too rapidly for their tanks. I now have a 40 litre builders bucket/plasterers bath set up as a grow out tank which will soon be housing the baby kribs and fingers crossed some baby rams too, spotted eggs last night...

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  5 лет назад

      Aye I think you went over that is one of your videos.
      I find they make great parents up to the point they are ready to give birth again when they start to chase the previous batch off.
      Once they start breeding they keep going so you should expect quite a few spawns out of them.
      Enjoy it bud, it's dead interesting raising Kribs. 👍

      It's great fun so far anyway, I'll do a vid on my heath robinson grow out bucket lol, I've also found a local retail/wholesaler that will actually pay me for excess fish rather than give minimal store credit so with a little luck i might at least get the food and power costs covered eventually.

      Yeah they are not suited to every tank right enough. You could cut a section of your lid out to allow for the breeder box but very few people would be comfortable with that especially since it's unlikely to be a permanent feature.
      There are alternatives that sit inside the tank although obviously not the same.

    Yes Daniel, another quality vid mate, hope u can answer, but I was wondering what are the bamboo looking plants you got growing out the tank? I've got some photos out the top of mine and I'd love some of what ever they are too

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks man.
      It is as you said; Bamboo. It's called lucky Bamboo here and you can pick it up in garden centres, home improvement stores and such like. It's quite cheap, I think I paid £1.50 for each.
      You need to make sure the top part and the leaves stick out from the surface. If you fully submerge the whole plant it dies after a while.
      I think it looks quite cool if you have a few standing up in the tank for the fish to weave through. Then of course you have the good luck it brings hopefully. 🤞😜

    what size of tubing is needed for this?

  • @fisharefriends598
    @fisharefriends598 5 лет назад +2

    I’ve used these. I do think the bag works. I think the fish inside always want to see there friends. When I’ve use a small internal box they lose colour. When I don’t in my fluval tank with rim, they can not see past the rim, they lose colour

    • @DanielKeepingFish
      @DanielKeepingFish  5 лет назад

      Yeah I think you're absolutely right there up to a point. When thefemales are ready to drop the fry they though tend to find a wee quite corner away from even their own kind. This is the point I loose the fry because they give birth without me noticing then by the time I see the female is no longer pregnant the fry have already been gobbled up.
      So the idea here is to leave it as late as possible until they are boxing up and ready to drop imminently.
      I misjudged it by a day so this time. The female was in the box for two days but she's back in with her friends now and doing fine. 👍

      I know mate, they're gorgeous right? Not the big type of fish you normally keep but if you're ever on the market for something smaller they're well worth a wee look.
      And thanks mate. I use floating plants to give fish a sense of security (for one thing) in their tanks. Made sense to apply the same principle for mama. 👍

    • @DanielKeepingFish

      I've used it that way up with Guppies and Platties and they've all dropped through the slots to the bottom. I liked the thought of being able to place some moss underneath for them to nestle away in and feel more secure.
      I haven't tried it with all species of fish though so you're right, I should have maybe explained that better.
