One of the most beautiful songs ever in my book. So sadly nostalgic, it evokes more emotion in me now than when I first heard it back in '78. Long live GG!
Ray was the middle guitarist. Derek Shulman sang. Beautiful video to memorialize Ray's passing. There is a point in the video where Derek sings in an emotional CU that got my eyes wet.
Gary Green is a highly underrated guitarist. I was coming back from France wearing my In A Glass House T-shirt - the security guy was a massive GG fan and told me he got Eddie Jobson to sign his copy of Eddie's "Green" LP that Gary played on, Eddie really loved his playing and when he signed the LP also write "Gary" next to the "Green" on the title. Eventually after quite a lot of chat the guard suddenly remembered he was at work, so the chat had to end
Derek Shulman is the one doing the singing and playing the bass. Ray Shulman is the guy in the black vest playing the 6 string acoustic. He usually played bass, but he also could play violin. Earlier in the band's career there was a third brother, Phil, who was also in the group. But he was significantly older than Derek and Ray, and he grew tired of being on the road and left the band.
The most adventurous prog band ever. They were all multi-instrumentalists. Ray was on 6 string. Usually he plays bass and violin, but his brother Derek (singer) was on bass here.
Saw them many times. A shame you guys couldn’t see them in a live venue. Seeing them live was seeing them at their best, as all of them were multi instrumentalists. 👍
Gentle Giant was one of those bands that not many people knew about. I wouldn't necessarily turn people on to their music if I thought they couldn't dig it, or at least appreciate them. On the flip side, it was satisfying to share them with the few who could. Those people usually had a deeper, more eclectic album collection than the average person, which would lead to checking out each other's vinyl stash. I've made decisions about whether to share an apartment with someone based in their album collection, and have lived in apartments where the combined record collection was fantastic. RUclips has changed things substantially, but for me, there was often an expeditionary component to discovering new music... back before the end of the world as we know it.
I love this song and your guys reaction to such a beautiful melodic masterpiece in honour of Ray Shulman. Thanks guys 🤘🤘🇬🇧🇬🇧
The works of Gentle Giant include influences from western classical music going back to Medieval times and the Renaissance, and/or with sounds from musical genres rooted in the 20th Century such as classic rock, blues, and jazz - depending on the composition. Many of the compositions that Kerry Minnear and Phil, Derek, and Ray Shulman composed - are astonishing! Multi-instrumentalists Kerry Minnear and Ray Shulman composed much of the ingenious contrapuntal interplay that is often featured in the music of Gentle Giant. And, some of the most beautiful compositions I have ever heard are on Gentle Giant albums. I consider Kerry Minnear and Ray Shulman to be two of the unsung geniuses of musical composition in modern times, and I believe that most aficionados of progressive rock would agree that Ray Shulman is the most underrated bass guitarist who ever lived! I suggest listening to the studio version of Memories Of Old Days.
Ray(RIP)Shulman was so good you took him for granted(he played violin too). This song is/was a bit of a departure for GG, a simpler piece, but still a nice tune
Saw GG on this tour back in the 70's at the Tower Theater in PA. Amazing! 1st time I saw them, they opened for Rick Wakeman at the Spectrum in Philly and they blew me away!. In fact, my buddy and I left 15 minutes into Wakeman's show as he was drunk off his rear. He had quart bottles of beer on the stage and was drinking on stage. He could barely play!
I saw the Missing piece tour in NYC & they incredible as always & seeing this song live was a highlight with them all playing guitars .
Talk about memories of old days, I saw Gentle Giant in concert way back in 1975, great memories.

I saw them play this song at one of their last shows in 1980
You should to listening the studio and the live version from this concert for the BBC in 1978 of "Funny ways".
Their opening song on their debut album Gentle Giant is called Giant.
