'cos it's a Donut van. Let Sandro f with it.
Was it in a ColdPlay music video? Doesn't matter, get it down to Miranda's.
Also, I don't know as to the "why" you need to get it to the shop. Angelina-sensei wasn't here to break down mechanically why on a scientific or theoretical level. I just know Sandro's saying it, so you should do it for the boys.
All I learned from this video..
I gotta go on a hunt!
But be prepared to book it, there's usually only one of you 😁
But they're speaking from California....So "go on a hunt" could mean something completely different. You never know.
Also, order of instructions received would be that if your car is broken into or stolen you take it to the shop AND THEN go on a hunt........And with a wandering mind like mine, all I can think of is the worst Spiderman anti-hero ever, Car-ven the Hunter.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Gotta hire Steph to go on a hunt for me.

I've learned from my buddy's dad, who is a mechanic, that the answer is always "I can list a few different reasons, but unless I can check and see which one it is, I can't tell you the actual answer. Bring it over so I can put it on my lift and check."
Such a good choice to have Steph and Sandro do this one-at this point all the regulars have awesome chemistry, so having the two of them means you're covering both the dealer (Audi, right?) experience and the independent shop owner perspective.
Yep, it was at an Audi dealership.
I respect Steph and her knowledge, but I feel like Angie would have been a better choice. Or better yet, have all 3!

Please keep these guys. I understand the explicitness might not be ideal for donut but they are just the funniest, most humble, and genuine people. I am a mechanic myself and I could totally relate to the form of speaking. They are funny and this is just perfect. F** RUclips rules, these guys keep me coming back!
We as audience already understood that mechanics cuss in general. Some may not know why they cuss on a daily basis and why they couldn't stop cussing, but we all appreciate more if they can be themselves and not hold anything back.
It often is not only RUclips these days. Also the same on TV.
Do not ever depict people speaking like how most people actually speak. But blast those American rules/views over all of the world so people in Europe have to endure the same restrictions which ethically and legally are no issue, but don´t think you may necessarily get content out that is legally questionable in Europe...
Indeed a hard thing to ask, as from a legal perspective in most places, the would not have to apply US laws and regulations, but those relevant in respect to where someone opens/accesses RUclips or whatever.
@ I agree with you, what a very confused world we live in.. but thankfully with RUclips since it’s on the internet which is accessible around the entire world, there are no laws regulating it, just some policies or whatever. Which some I don’t really agree with, but by using the service you are forced to. It’s more like they throw a filter over you, and you have no choice but to wear it while you’re there.
"Why do mechanics charge for diagnostics?"
Best answer would've been
"Well does your doctor?" Lol
Good analysis, but for a lot of countries (such as Australia for myself), we don't pay when we go to a bulk billing doctor so the analogy does fall flat. Unfortunately bulk billing doctors are becoming more and more scarce here though so I'm sure everyone would understand what you mean anyway.
*Smiles and waves from Scotland! 😁
But, yeah, mechanics charge because they need to feed their families.

Easier answer, nothing is free in this world
Knowledge costs! Knowing more leaving the shop has value and should be paid for!
Diagnosing takes time and time is money.
Time spent on diagnosing a potential customers car is time that isn't spent repairing a car. And that makes it valuable.
Donut is so lucky to have professional mechanics who double as comedians and carry off their acts wonderfully. I look forward to all the regular mechanics who routinely do the show. Especially love Sandro, Steph, and Angelina. The Mazda guy is also wonderful.

The smell is not always the condenser… I got an AC horror story for you here. One day, out of the blue, the AC fan started thumping extremely badly, I mean, it sounded like a lawn mower. I thought maybe it was out of balance or the bearing had gone bad. But then, the smell came. Ever smelled a dead deer on the side of the road that’s been fermenting for a week? That’s what it stank like. So I pulled the fan to look at the filter and to my surprise and dismay, there were four dead mice in the fan, one adult and three almost newborn babies, that had chewed a hole through the filter and must’ve fallen into the fan while it was running. Suffice to say, once the dead mice were gone, the smell went away, too.

Jesus christ but sandro is just gold! This guy has chemistry and charisma for days! You guys really lucked out finding him. He impresses me more each video I see him in. Thanks a ton!
The idea of a "mechanic's lien" is waaaaaaay older than cars, dating back to when "mechanic" meant "person who uses tools," more or less. It worked the same way it does these days (and Sandro nailed it on the explanation): you dropped your wagon/barrel/plow/mill/arquebus/whatever off, the expert did whatever work it required, and then you didn't get it back until you'd paid your bill.

“Go on a hunt!” 😂👏🏻
Sandro and Steph a great dynamic duo! ❤️
2:14 turn your AC off a few minutes before arrival. This allows the condenser to dry up and prevents the moisture to become moldy.
This, AC off and preferably just the blower on, to speed up the process.
If your condenser needs to dry off from running you have bigger problems.
"Why do cars catch fire?"
"Well if it's a FIAT..." 😅😅😅
TRUTH! My first FIAT (early 70s) popped a hose fitting out of the carburetor and began spraying fuel onto the exhaust manifold literally 30 minutes after picking it up. This is also the correct answer for the "why does my car smell like gasoline" question!
I still loved that car though, so much fun to drive. Italian cars just insist that you prove yourself worthy to own them from time to time... I would probably never have taken up auto mechanics as a hobby if it hadn't been for that car.
I thinking because the power seat motor kept running and over heated.
Riling up Steph appears to be Sandro's hobby lol
Not just Steph. He tries to get a rise or laugh out of everyone. He's a class clown and it's great to watch. Riling up Steph, trying to make Angie burst out laughing during her teacher mode bits. Would be amazing to see him and Bob together. NOTHING would get done in that video and everyone would be hurting from laughing.

So carseats DO expire. Plastic becomes brittle over time and in the event of a wreck, an old carseat will shatter causing your crumb snatcher to yell "KOBE!" before flying through the windshield
Correct, 10 years max is usually the recommendation before they should be recycled.
This made my laugh more then it should "KOBE"
@@RaXXha i mean that seems like a kinda pointless concern. By the time that expires regulation would have changed 3-4 times and u'd need a new carseat anyways.

How do mechanics charge for labor?
Most charge "by the book" . If the book says it takes 2 hours to do the job, they charge for 2 hours even if it only took 45min. Some mechanics charge actual hours so in the previous scenario you would be charged for only 45 min. These mechanics are the best imo.
Your welcome Sandro.
We do equipment repairs and there are times we charge by the book and times we charge actual time. Will depend on a lot up to and including how often we've done it, if we had a time or two that was a pain until we saw a few of the repairs and maybe learned a couple of "short cuts" and most important will be the customers attitude... You a PITA customer, I'm charging you as much as I can.. You a normal chill customer, that may have some questions, but isnt an a$$ and doesnt whip out the "my neighbor said" or "I saw on youtube" we'll treat you a little better probably..
Really never understood why people have such a problem with book time. if a mechanic that's been doing it for 20 years learns how to do a 2 hour job in 45 minutes, you're paying for the years, not the minutes.
@@DB-zp9un This is understandable
@@Phosphor66 Some don't have a ton of money and would happily pay 250 (parts+labor) for a 45 min job rather than 360. Sometimes life happens and every penny counts.
If you charge by the book, you won't have two people getting the same service, but wildly different bills. That causes a ton of problems.
Years ago my dishwasher broke down and my insurance covered it. They sent a guy to work on it. He got it working and seemed really proud. Vibration when stopping can come from warped brake disks. Brake disks warp from heat cycles.
In my early years, I learned that blasting them with water at the car wash while they're hot warps them very fast. 5 years worth of heat cycles in 1 day!

A good reason to charge for diagnostics, especially these days, is because alot of manufacturers charge for access to their system/database with a monthly subscription payment.
Diagnostic fees often go towards covering that subscription.
About charging for a diagnosis: if you don't know what the problem is with your vehicle, and you don't know how to diagnose it, you bring it in to a mechanic. We spend time figuring out what the issue is. Sometimes it's as simple as looking at a readily accessible part, sometimes it's disassembling the dash.
Squeaking while turning could be the power steering belt too…
Could also be steering column dampener. I'm looking at you Hyundai.
6:31 Car seats expire because plastic breaks down when exposed to sunlight and the air. As that happens, the seat's structural integrity also breaks down, and the protection provided by the car seat can become essentially non-existent.

Something that I haven't heard yet about gloves is that they keep chemicals from getting into your liver. anything that gets onto your hands/skin is absorbed by your skin to some degree and your liver has to filter that shit out of your body. Old school mechanics that aren't used to wearing gloves have been found to have higher cancer rates and a huge part of that is lack of gloves and respirators. Even if you don't care about your hands being pretty, wear your PPE! It literally will help you live longer and give you a better chance at not dying from a chronic disease and painful death.
I learned something new today. Thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

There was a woman on the community Facebook group complaining about how much her oil change costs. I go to the same place for oil changes. They try to upsell you on other services when you pull in. There is a big yellow sign right there listing all the stuff they try to upsell you on AND they tell you what it's going to cost. She got the full package with everything they offered, she paid the price listed on the sign, she then went home and got on Facebook and complained. Probably what happened was her husband saw the bill and said "you paid how much for an oil change? That's insane." Not knowing she added literally everything they offer. Their regular oil changes aren't that expensive but I did look at the sign to see how it could get so high when I went in next and there it was. 😂
That's not a 'woman' issue, that's an 'illiteracy' issue.
@theaikidoka I should have been more clear. She was acting like they took advantage of her because she was a woman. I forgot to put that in there. You are correct though. Could happen to anyone who can't be bothered to pay attention to what they are agreeing to.
Oil change places in general charge a lot. I used to pay close to 100 bucks for an oil change for my car at my local valvoline, but ever since I’ve started doing it myself, I can do it for 35, and takes half an hour. There’s no way a short oil change has 65 bucks worth of labor 😂 plus they WAY overtighten the drain screw and filter as well, which is no good
@@keithgriswold5898 I've done wheel bearings, pads and rotors, vacuume lines, wheel studs, power steering lines, air filters, cabin filters, clutch slave cylinders, and a bunch of other stuff on my truck. "A busted leak." LOL 😂
I get what he meant, but that cracked me up.
0:49 they mean why is my car vibrating when hitting the brakes. easy, warped rotors
Worn tie rod ends or other steering elements will do it too. If it happens EVERY time you brake them it is probably warped rotors or drums, but if it only happens at certain speeds then I'd suspect steering or possibly suspension components instead.
My Subaru WRX has a recall the dealer refuses to fix, even after I wrote to Subie HQ and they told him to fix it. A $20 hose leaks gas in cold weather. But it costs $2,000 to take off the intake manifold to get at it. The dealer reassured me "They all smell like that. Don't worry your car wont explode."
Do it yourself
@mathai_9150 yep, subaru are easy to access/remove intake manifold
seems like Subaru should drop them as a dealer if they're not performing required recall work. Is that even legal for them to refuse? NHTSA might be interested in hearing about it.
Contact Subaru HQ again, then take your car to another dealer. All Subaru dealerships have to honor a recall, Subaru warranty, and Subaru extended warranty.
0:40 First thing that popped in my head was warped brake rotors or worn out pads.
Yeah I definitely think that was the correct answer.
Idk how that wasn't the first response. He's definitely got the experience as a mechanic, maybe it slipped his mind, or they don't turn rotors / drums?
I think he was thinking along the lines of "why is it vibrating when I'm stopped at a light" rather than "why is it vibrating while I am in the process of coming to a stop""
You can tell he thought it was stopped, because they skied the braking question later, and that’s where they went.
Idk how they missed that, 9/10 its warped rotors and/or bad pads
16:36 off the top of my head, when we get into engine mapping, we can use topology to visualise air-fuel ratio, throttle position, and fuel. You use fluid dynamics everywhere (from combustion chamber design, to internal intake manifold designed for equally distributing laminar air, all the way out to the "aero"dynamics.) Math is everywhere in automotive.

I was a mechanic in the Army for 16 years. I worked on tractors (both the farm and semi-truck kind), generators, helicopters, tanks, armored personnel carriers, lawn trimmers, lawn mowers, water pumps, outboard and inboard boat motors, lots of land rovers, weapon systems, radar systems, and sometimes the heavy diesel stuff I was trained to work on.
Nice start to the year
car seats expire for a mix of reasons : partially to ensure newer safer seats are being used, not old technology that isn't as safe, and partially because certain materials flex under tension, and may no longer perform as intended in the event of a crash. they expire typically after I think it's 10 years? maybe 5. regardless even if they haven't taken an impact or had a crash, the seat itself has an expiration date.
0:01 Oh shit….its the siliconator 😮
The vibration when driving, or braking can be wheel balance or even just rotating the tires. Had that issue on my 2007 Camry a while back and two shops said it was the brakes and wanted 900 dollars, but I figured might as well trying to get the wheels balanced and rotated first and it fixed it for like 100.
Can we get a video of Sandro and Steph going on a hunt?
About the car seats (assuming it's baby seats), it's most likely because most of them are made from compressed foam (like the inside of a bike helmet), to absorb an impact once, but that foam degrades over time, and at some point it has degraded enough to no longer be able to provide the protection it's there for, thus an expiration date :) For bike helmets the rule of thumb is that they last 3-5 years (or 1 accident/drop), before the foam starts to break down due to sweat and exposure to weather and sunlight.
I also thought the question could be referring to some custom done or high end upholstery material like getting snakeskin or crocodile skin seats (if you're into that), those will come with an expiration date even with maintenence for sun damage
I hope everyone on there is ok during all the wildfires stay safe

Omg, people please go to your local mechanic, this poor girl is walking around with half a pair of jeans 😢
The reason race seats / helmets / etc expire isn't really because of wear, it's just that safety regulations change and having equipment expire makes sure that Bill Bowers doesn't try to run his 40 year old equipment because "it was good enough then, so it's good enough now!"

Cars burn oil because as they age, they lose stroke. All modern cars are four stroke (oil in block) now, but the ones that are in museums are 2 stroke (oil in fuel). Yours is slowly moving through 3.5 to 2.5 stroke, where the oil goes through the cilinder and exhaust.

"Why do mechanics lie?"
Steph: "What?!?"
Sandro: "It's a thing..."
It is. My father was a mechanic for 50+ years. He was honest, but tons of mechanics will lie. If they quiz you on what is wrong with the car and you clearly have no clue... there is a good chance they are about to invent a bunch of things they have to do and inflate the hours associated with that work. If you sound desperate AND have no clue what is going on... thank you for all your money.
Yeap. Have a family mechanic but one time had to coast into a different shop. Got a call two hours later and o'boy, did they try to feed me a line of bullshit. Poor guy wasn't even good at feeding bullshit, told him to put everything back in and I was towing it to my normal shop. A $900, no $1,500, no sorry I read that wrong $2,450 job became a $500 job at my local.
Get yourself a family mechanic and they will do you a solid.
"Why do cars need oil"... Well, to be FAIR, you only need oil if you want it to KEEP running for more than 15-60 seconds. It doesn't NEED oil to operate...but it needs oil if you want it to KEEP operating! :)
These 2 guys are good hosts for the show
I love the pride she showed when explaining that mechanics are blue collar!

If your car gets stolen, hit in a parking lot or got broken in to, you go full John Wick.
There is a relatively famous story that is shared between Muscle Mag and IMBOC in their online forums.
Basically, a Bullitt was stolen in Florida, the car is too fast for police, the car did end up being recovered by other Mustang drivers who boxed the guy in.
I love how the first half is “take it to the shop” like that wasn’t my fist thought till they charge me $100 just to plug it into a computer and tell me what’s wrong then charge 10x more than it would cost to do it myself with the same amount of knowledge they have from just reading a book or hand book on how to fix the issue
I have a shop that I go to when needed in the Denver Colorado area that does an hour free diagnostics. The owner says that he likes to do that so that he can give a more accurate estimate. I think that it's more to get people in the shop. But he has proven to be trust worthy and has fixed a problem (lose suspension bolts) during that time and didn't charge me. They are hard to find, but there are good mechanics out there.
I’m here in Denver. Can I have the name of the shop please 🙏🏾
00:45 often it can be warped rotors too
(Besides what the mechanics said): for problem number 2. Possibly warped calipers. For problem number 3: Obviously check the wheels for any bends. Have a tire shop like Discount Tire check the balance for you. Tires also play a factor into this but most balancing machines will measure the road force of a tire as well. Mechanic mentions loose motor mounts which is something I would check. Lastly if the problem remains, check for a loose axle (especially if vibration comes and goes on at acceleration with particular speeds). If the problem persists still, ensure the subframe is torqued down to spec. This is an issue that took a year for me to troubleshoot. It was a combination of all three for me. I would get horrible vibrations from 20-30 mph but then would go away until I reached 60-70 mph. The vibration was only present under acceleration (not coasting or decelerating). Once I was above 70 mph the vibration substantially subsided. However, with a little grit and determination, I was able to fix the issue myself. Although, I made the mistake of changing an axle and torque specing my subframe at the same time. In an experiment it is important to change one factor at a time to be able to come to a conclusion. I suggest checking your car in the order I said above. As a former tire technician and someone who works on their own car, I know that a large percentage of vibration issues are solely because of wheels and tires.
on anything involving cops and/or insurance, take pictures of EVERYTHING, especially the other car AND THE DRIVER. Too often fools will say they weren't driving their car so the cops have to drop it.
One of the best videos you've come out with recently
They missed a few questions: What happens if Sandro's car gets scratched ? If you have a RUclips channel will customers flock to your repair shop ?
Can you fix everything with silicone ? If Angelina wins in a race against Sandro will he sell his car ? Is Steph a huntress who fixes cars in her spare time or a mechanic that occasionally hunts ? Is hunting legal in Los Angeles ?
What to do if your car is stolen: Hire John Wick! 😁
0:56 pitted rotors is the most common cause of vibration when stopping.
Mechanics are paid a hell of a lot of money.
