The color change head gasket tester is a pH test. When CO2 from the exhaust dissolves in the water it turns the pH indicator from blue to yellow. If you run out of tester fluid but have a fish tank test kit that would still work (the chemical is called bromthymol blue).

I have blown a head gaskets 5 times on 4 different vehicles, but the last was the saddest. During the pandemic my hubs & I bought a 1985 Ram Roadtrek campervan to give our kid a place to quarantine when they came home from college on break. We loved this thing. Her name was Hildie . When kid graduated in spring of 2021, hubs & I decided to take Hildie & spend 4 days driving from Western NY to Austin TX & had the best time. We had it checked over and tuned up before leaving. But we got 100 miles from Austin & blew the head gasket. We had to leave her in Austin at the mechanic’s & drove a U-Haul home. That campervan was so so cool. It was all decked out & a lot of care went into her by the previous owned. As far as I know she’s still sitting there, at a shop in Austin, and we definitely miss her. #RIPHildie
Oh and the 4th head gasket was actually blown by a mechanic shop that refused to listen to me when I told them that I knew exactly what it was. They didn’t believe me, they took it for a ride & destroyed the engine. We ended up have to get a lawyer involved to get our money back that we had put into it.
Opened my old Subaru radiator up. Smelled like gasoline. Didn't need a test 😂

lol on the radiator little cap. My dad tried to replace his battery in his HHR. It’s in the back hatch. He was furious the post clasp wasn’t going on the positive post. Finally he got me to take a look. I admit at first I was like WTF? Asked if he got the right battery. But i knew all posts are the same. Then I noticed, it still had the plastic cap on it. Hooked right up after that. We had a good laugh over that one.
A real man coulda forced it on over top the protective cap
Actually the positive and negative terminals are slightly different sizes to help prevent the battery from being hooked up backwards.

I worked for a shop back in the 90's that handled a lot of law enforcement vehicles. Every single one of the local prison's Jeeps had dented up hoods from the batteries exploding. The constant overcharging from running 24 hours a day would cook them until they exploded. Funny thing, they wouldn't authorize upgrading the batteries on new vehicles until the factory one blew up.
5:17 this is why you NEED to be absolutely sure if your Honda uses a group *51* OR a group *51R* battery!
Both fit in the tray, but one moves the positive terminal to a position where the hood prop can contact it and short it out.

Kid with the torque wrench needs to start by using the parking brake. All his initial effort is going toward moving the car.
Seeing that connector between the headgasket made me remember when i was 18. i was doing a headgasket job on my old audi a4, on a saturday night, had some beers with a friend. i was busy with reinstalling parts, whilst my friend spotted the headgasket still on the workbench!!! i did the manifolds back up, the moment i got onto the timing belt. my friend said "hey, when are you going to use your new headgasket?" and handed it to me. i installed my head without a gasket at all. we blacked out laughing. good times

The first video is from PFI Speed. If I recall, the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm wasn't holding, and was actually filling up the whole exhaust system until it came out the turbo.
Was it dumping it out the exhaust pipe too then?
It wouldn't come out that side of the turbo from the exhaust.
Watch the video, it was the regulator.
I'll believe the regulator, but filling up the exhaust sounds a little off since it would just dump out of the tail pipe. Fuel dumping out the compressor side of the turbo would be coming from the intake also.

1:45 the injector signal out could be pulled down to ground, so if for any reason the ECU ground signal for the injectors gets 12V, they'll all turn on at once.

20:24 The reason the battery got messed up so bad is not because its the fault of the tool more so the technician because on absorbed glass mat (AGM) batteries you have to charge those particular batteries at a low and slow amperage so having it charge at 30 Amps was way overkill lol.
I was also thinking maybe there was previous damage from improperly charging, even though the snap-on was technically doing it correctly.

For high torque values that you don't have the body mass for, I recommend going to the other side of the tire and pulling up on the wrench with your feet firmly planted on the floor. It's much easier than trying to push the same amount down.
Pushing the wrench down can actually lift you off the ground if you weigh less than the torque you're aiming for. I've had it happen when I was trying to set an axle nut to 260ft/lbs, and I only weighed ~150.
OK but with a 2ft bar, your weight is already giving you 300ft-lbs.
@beeble2003 I generally try to keep one hand on the socket-end of the wrench to ensure alignment and to keep it from slipping off. Without a long extension (which I try to never use for high torque), the wrench is pretty close to the side of the car, so it's hard to get my center of gravity right on top of the wrench handle. Without getting the center of gravity over that tip, you can't reach that max number.
I just find it way easier to flip the wrench 180° and pull upwards. 🤷
Much simpler to just use a torque multiplier.
@@builttobeat2741 I do for the 360ft/lb rear axle nut, but it takes longer to set up the multiplier and bracing block than just pulling the 1 wrench out of the tool chest. So if I can pull it by hand, I do. Torque multipliers are pretty great though, agreed.

I've seen every episode of Real Mechanic Stuff since the first video, on the day of release. I watched the entire video and loved it just like every other episode of Real Mechanic Stuff. Read the comments after and was disappointed. I think a lot of people have become WAY to critical and overbearing with their criticisms ever since the whole "drama" broke a while back. Feels like people are just trying to find things wrong each video without something actually being "wrong". Tristian was great, I had no issues with this episode at all. Unless episodes become completely random and unrelated to "Real Mechanic Stuff", i'll always be grateful for the content.

That supposed apprentice thought that breaking off the studs was the torque limit. Like breaking off a piece of that kit Kat bar!
Probably thought of it as assembling cheap furniture. Got an entertainment center from Walmart or Target when I got my apartment. Instructions literally said to keep twisting the screw until the head breaks off.
I had a wire drop down between a bellhousing and block, like that cylinder head. It was 11 pm, a very greasy vehicle, and the middle of a heat wave. I was so happy when it came out without dropping the transmission again. I don't have a lift. It was on 12" wheel stands and I bench pressed it into place.
These comments 😂 there's a whole lot of people out there not working, or doing work from home etc that seem to have no idea Sandro runs a business. It would be nice to sit in front of your keyboard all day but some of us have real responsibility outside of making and consuming content 😂

Worked at a battery shop. Its actually perfectly believable that battery would start the car. You do not need the liquid for the battery to hold charge. Its stored within the metal plates the water keep the temperature and slows the chemical reaction to preserve capacity longer. The more the lead plates oxidize the lower your capacity will be
That water is just distilled water and because its pure its actually an insulator. The sulfuric acid (which wont hurt you btw unless you ingest it) comes from the chemical reaction from the lead plates which turns the distilled water into sulfuric acid.
