If you cast One With Death with Hive Mind of the battlefield, you technically lose the game LAST, so you win!
Came here to say this
I guess you could say great minds think alike lol.
Also came here to say this.
Another use for the ever amusing Sudden Substitution
And my first thought was Misdirection, but that doesn't work! One With Death doesn't target!
Please, please, please NEVER stop saying or guessing the set symbols. It’s one of my favourite play alongs. 😁
I love that One With Death is "printed" on top of One With Nothing, such a cute little detail that didn't need to be there
I adore that under the rulings for One With Death, two of the three are "yes, seriously" & "yes, you lose the game"
11:08 Cast it with Hive Mind out, make your opponent cast copies of it. Remember, due to how the stack works, their copies resolve (and thus lose) first.
Beat me to it, except I was thinking of convoluted lines that involved relying on APNAP order and it being instant speed.
I saw someone suggest Sudden Substitution, too (assuming your desired opponent controls a creature you can target). You wouldn't be able to stop the swap by permanent removal, but it'll only hit one opponent where Hive Mind will hit *every* opponent.
...I only played mtg casually for a year or so around 2008, but I always find this minutia fascinating. I like rules. They make me feel cozy.
Discard one with death to your graveyard somehow. Give your opponent your Saruman of Many Colors with Custody Battle. Use Mindslaver to control your opponent and then force the opponent to double spell, targeting One With Death from your graveyard and have them cast it.
Thanks for opening the pack, Chicago was a blast!
With how prominent the Avacyn's Collar flavor text has become for Ancient Grudge, I feel like the original Time Spiral printing of Ancient Grudge would be an "obscure" printing for many people.
I HAD NO IDEA THAT CARD WAS FROM TIME SPIRAL
I think Blastoderm deserves to be talked about a fair bit considering its competitive résumé; it even appeared in World Championship decks in both 2000 and 2001.
Also, what set was that printing from? I didn't recognize it & Graham didn't say
@@PKFatApparently it's from "Duel Decks: Garruk vs. Liliana".
I love Blastoderm. It was one of the first creatures that made me realize how deeply weird magic is, but in a good way.
Sudden Substitution is an instant from Commander 2019 from the Sultai Morph deck for 2UU that reads...
Split Second
"exchange control of Target noncreature spell and Target Creature. Then the spell's Controller may choose new targets for it."
you can use Oath of druids Classic Forbidden Orchard to tap for the black and to give the oppponent a 1/1 for you to steal if they don't already have a creature, and you can gift them One With Death. :)
That's absolutely hilarious.
"Blastoderm from the Pastoderm" definitely made me snort through my nose, so it definitely counted, yes.
Hmm..."When Doomed Dissenter dies, dispense a double-deadly, double-durable dark undead dude"
“That’s so bad, why would I play it?” People have been asking that about One With Nothing since 2005. SaffronOlive tried making OWN work in an Arclight Phoenix shell. OWN’s price is hilarious to look at, because every time a discard/graveyard mechanic debuts, its price spikes. SOI and the return of Madness, Amonkhet and Hazoret needing you to be heckbent. Even Hogaak caused a spike.
Hexproof is still used in Standard sets, so while even people just starting now would still know it as a frame of reference when explaining Shroud. And Blastodern definitely deserves the attention, it got a callback in Planar Chaos and most recently in ONE.
Also you got Fading wrong, you very clearly emphasized 'if you can't' and then still went and described Vanishing instead. Fading 3 is (Summoning Sick), Usable, Usable, Usable, (Sacrifice)
I really wish they would do a new print run of Mystery Booster (Retail Edition) every year, with small changes to the contents of the set each year. Mystery Booster sealed is one of my favorite limited formats of all time, and I would love to be able to play it more often. I'd also love a Mystery Booster (Arena Edition) that's always available for Draft/Sealed on Arena that uses a curated list of cards from across everything currently on Arena.
Avacyn's church was with Ajani in the amazon researching spider's right before he grinned his leonin grin
1:40 because that release was themed along GRN, and Azorious wasn't in that set (but presumably in GK 2). Yaay, engagement!
As you know Bob, Avacyn's collar is the symbol of her church.
I was surprised when he picked Mizzix's Mastery first. I would've thought Chupacabra or Reinforcements would be better in a limited environment.
Yes, but also way more boring. Sometimes you just gotta chase those build-around dreams!
Well if you wanna end games quickly I think One with Death is the obvious choice
Daring Skyjek was the first Magic card I remember! I even drew fanart of it because I thought it was so cool. My first ever FNM I got a turn 1 War Falcon, turn 2 this guy, turn 3 Skyknight Legionnaire and swing in the air for 7. I was so excited.
Some dismiss it as "just blade with set's mechanic" but I'll always remember it fondly. Not even a turn 1 shock land, sol ring, arcane signet, llanowar elves today can beat the rush I felt of that game so long ago.
Hive Mind may be the "best" use of One with Death, but there's also Lich's Mirror. Kind of hard to break that one, but it does something.
GK1 was from the first batch of Guild decks, featuring the enemy color guilds.
Actually, it was the 5 guilds from Guilds of Ravnica, with GK2 being the 5 from Ravnica Allegiance. So GK1 was Boros, Selesnya, Golgari, Dimir, and Izzet, while GK2 was Azorius, Orzhov, Rakdos, Gruul, and Simic.
@mattperkinson9604 Thanks. I remembered Izzet, Golgari and Boros in that first group and just autocorrected into enemy color pairs.
Mystery booster is always a blast to see opened, so many cards from years of magic sets just smooshed together
Thank you for cracking a pack, it was great to watch you.
Ahh yes my favorite set, commander masters 2.
On Ancient Grudge, reading the flavour text explains the flavour text
Shroud is that one ability everybody misunderstands on Lightning Greaves
GK1 was the guilds that were in Guilds of Ravnica, GK2 was the guilds in ravnica allegiance
"These are all excellent questions. Moving on-"
One with Death wins the game if there is a Hive Mind on the battlefield.
One with Death is sweet anti-Mizzix’s Mastery tech. If you can discard it into your bin at instant speed after your opponent casts MM overloaded on your graveyard, then you’ve got a stew going.
I don't think it's worth playing but you could kill your opponents with One With Death and Hive Mind. Hive Mind is an enchantment that has each player copy any instant and sorcery spell cast. This means that your opponent's copies of One With Death will resolve before your real one and they will lose the game before you. This was a real deck in Modern a while ago where people were casting any of the Pact spells with Hive Mind so that when the opponent couldn't pay for the Pact trigger in their upkeep they would lose the game.
A great Crack a Pack and a trip through the sets.
*puts reflecting mirror down*
"What'cha doing?"
Oh, nothing. *taps three black*
One with Death has Hive Mind written all over it
the obvious use for One with Death is with Hive Mind, but you could also play it with Stunning Reversal to draw 7 cards for 5 mana at instant speed with the minor drawback that your life total becomes 1
Here’s a thing you could do with One with Death: Have the Twelfth Doctor (the demonstrate one) on the battlefield, find a way to cast One with Dead from exile, and give your opponent a copy of it. Fun times ensue. (Maybe have a Nivmagus Elemental out to deal with having 2 copies of a spell that kills you on the stack afterwards.)
To help Graham out I'd like to let him know that the way you play one with death is by using a blue encahtment card called hive mind.
Hive mind says whenever a player casts and instant or sorcery spell each play copies that spell and casts it.
This card has often been used to kill people with pacts they can't pay for but works even better with one with death as your opponents copies will resolve before your own.
Somehow, the way Graham looked at the playtest card and laughed, I knew. I knew it was One With Death.
One with Death is just a One with Nothing joke.
A good one.
With most people in commander conceding at sorcery speed, one with death allows you to do it at instant speed. 🎉
I may have had some chuckles that would have been even too outrageous for Sensible Chuckle magazine. Like, nearly medium chuckles. Bordering on the kind of throaty laugh that'll make an unprepared listener look twice.
Maybe a relic of it's time, but I've very much been clobbered to death by Blastoderms. They get a lot done in those three turns.
Me? :3 innocuous? how dare, I'm actually super nocuous!
I love how this comment implies that “:3 innocuous” is like a special type of innocuous
Like cats get access to a whole other level of innocuous that us humans can only begin to imagine
@@Nylspider This is indeed very true, but for the purpose of this video I'm actually an insect.
One with Death is a swag play if you have anything that says "you cant lose the game"
You were technically entertained, the best kind of entertained
Given that the set code is GK1 I actually assume that all of the guild kits share the same set codename but might all have different expansion symbols. That would actually be some really cool trivia I guess.
as many will point out One with Death combos with hive mind to kill your opponents before it kills you.. especially when you remember that the traditional way to kill someone with hive mind was using it to force your opponent to cast a pact that they hopefully can't pay their way out of... soo one with death is a much more solid way to improve that combo deck.
If there are only two players remaining, and you cast one with death while you control the Twelth Doctor, you can demonstrate it, causing your opponent to lose first
You could demonstrate your playtest card with the 12th Doctor out to make your opponent's copy resolve first.
I'd assume GK 1 would be because Boros was featured in Guilds of Ravnica and Azorius was only featured in ravnica allegiance
And the guild kits were only released with the corresponding guilds in each set
The Citadel is actually from Commander Anthology 2. I know since I own it.
Graham there is a new bear commander Kudo, King among bears
I played a Mystery Booster draft with my friends, p1p1 Baleful Strix, p1p2 One With Death, p1p3 Mistmeadow Witch. I proceeded to draft an unbeatable tempo blink deck and lose every game with One With Death except one, where my opponent conceaded because he was on Naya Auras and didn't want to wait while I drew to One With Death on the bottom, 0-3 in record but 3-0 in our hearts.
One with Death + Sudden Substitution, opponent controls the One With Death and loses the game.
"I beliieve it's pronounced 'achugenablehbleh'"
If your opponent is playing Jeleva or something else that steals your cards, One With Death can be useful.
"I want this to be good" the definition of a pet card.
How about with a spell that counters and redirects the spell to new target?
When Doomed Dissenter dies, design a deux/deux Deadhead dude denoter.
Just imagine running Syr Elenora, buffing with Fae Flight and dropping Enter the Infinite.
I've only managed to play Enter the Infinite once, and made the mistake of tapping out with Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur in play. Needless to say, I died.
I did one mystery booster draft with the retail edition. Pretty fun if im remembering correctly. Idk if it was in the draft or the box i bought that i got my mana crypt.
I've noticed that when he Graham needs to grab a random number, he says 17. I also do this, and i don't know why
You sir (* looks at Graham* )are out of order! I will not have my good friend Blastoderm slandered like that. 😂What do you mean talking about it more than it deserves?? 😂 This card is an absolute house!! And now I'm thinking about monkey house. Dang it what was I angry about again? ....Never mind *unpauses video*
In a 1v1 game, if you control the Twelfth Doctor and cast One With Death from anywhere other than your hand (cascade into it, maybe), you win the game 😅
Graham, I've got it the One With Death solution for you.
Run the 12th Doctor with a black-identity companion.
Play Platinum Angel.
Cast One With Death From anywhere other than your hand.
Demonstrate One With Death, forcing an opponent to cast A copy of it.
You have a platinum angel, they don't, they lose.
I don't think you even need the Plat, their copy will resolve first.
Until next time, I have been entertained.
Despite knowing the joke, you got a spit take on the Avacyn's Collar (the symbol of her church) bit.
Also, I fell like there's something with 'One with Death' and any of the redirect cards, but I could be wrong.
As others have said, the only real trick is somehow giving the opponent a copy of One With Death on the Stack so they have to cast it. It doesn’t target, so redirection doesn’t work.
8:41 Commander Masters 2?? That card is from the future???
How does proliferate interact with shroud? Could you proliferate more fade counters onto Blastoderm?
Proliferate doesn't target.
One with death and sudden substitution works
I always carry a copy of One with Death for those long ass games. It's an out :P!
Does this mean more regular C-A-Ps again? Or is this a one-off?
One With Death can’t hold a candle to Companion Cage
Syr Elanora wouldn't have had Ward if it existed, because it's mechanically different in a second (much bigger) way: Ward also stops ABILITIES. She only stops spells.
As he says, she would have Ward if made now, not because her ability is functionally Ward.
*insert sensible chuckle gif here*
I won a small raffle at my LGS and had the choice between a pack of this or scars of mirrodin, and the guy convinced me to get the scars. I pulled nothing and the mystery booster had a demonic tutor and something else cool lol
It's not the most obscure printing by design. They go with the most recent printing, and for cards that have few reprints that's why the set symbol most often is a duel deck or a guild kit.
There have been cards opened in these on Crack a Pack that have been not the most recent.
@@Mordalon Don't have time to go over all the mystery booster openings, but I checked this one again, and Crack-A-Pack - Nov 2, 2021, and there is only one case in those 2 videos where it wasn't the most recent printing.
This was Mortify where the most recent was Ravnica Allegiance which released the same year. But then it was the printing just before which was Commander 2018, and the most "obscure" printing of Mortify would be Sorin vs Tibalt imo. I would explain that the reason they didn't pick the RA printing is that Mystery Boosters already was designed and was starting it's print run before the release of RA. If you have an example in mind please tell me though. The pack in this video was the 2021 print run, and the Nov 2 pack was the 2019 print run. (Although I'm not sure if the 2021 print run uses the same printings as 2019, this is possible)
Its not the "most obscure" printing, its just whatever was the most recent printing (and thus the most likely to have accurate wording).
There have been examples of no the most recent printing (at the time Mystery Booster was released) opened on Crack a Pack.
Oh, cool. They reprinted Daring Skyjack with a typo in it's name!
Wait, what? It's always been that way?
No... couldn't be.
one with death could be cast with the twelth doctor to make an opponent lose the game
7:20 I think you mixed up Fading and Vanishing (which is completely understandable, I don't know why they did both).
Fading came first, then in Planar Chaos they wanted a mechanic that used Time counters that, since Planar Chaos was the Present in the Past Present Future themed block, represented cards being temporary and thus “only in the present”. But similar to the reason Hexproof was made because people misplayed Shroud, Vanishing was worded in the way people would often misplay Fading as. Unlike Hexproof, Vanishing wasn’t used a ton afterward so to use now both look like old mechanics, but at the time Fading was the old thing and Vanishing was the new improved version.
A one-sided shroud... so, a hospital gown really?
Commander Masters 2? What did I miss?
Can confirm as snorting!
One With Death + Return the Favor = 2 opponents lose for 5 mana. Good rate..
They put One With Death in the pack so that whenever someone opens it, you can tell them that they just lost the game 🤭
one with death and going the donate route?
I have been entertained
If you can reliably counter One With spells at no or low cost, and can also share copies of them on the stack with your opponents... This is way too complicated to pull off, basically.
They really missed (get it) a trick when they named that keyword Shroud instead of "Missing."
Get it because "target"
Crack! A! Pack!
[[Sudden Substitution]] (or the like)
Fading may suck, but it still beats phasing.
I hope you mean Phasing specifically and not "phases out", because that has done wonders in recent years.
I thought I told you to stop making up animas?
