What REALLY Happened to Walter | Is He Alive or Swapped Bodies with David ? Space Jockey ?

- In Alien covenant there is a fight between two synthetics after which David impersonates Walter and deceves Tanesse and Daniels. There are a few questions left unanswered, whether or nor not David killed Walter and how exactly David assumed Walter’s identity. There are two main theoris on this, David simply removed his hand and changed clothes or maybe David downloaded his conscioucness into Walter body. Although both of these theories may be plausible, there are a few blatant clues in the movie that make only one of these two logicaly possible. In this video I’m gonna talk about how David impersonated Walter and if Walter is still alive which may be totaly possible given some details about Alien Awakening.
Before we discuss if Walter is in fact dead, let’s figure out how David assumed is identity. We know that David poseses a level of strengh above human, so it wouldn’t be hard for him to remove his hand and get in Walter clothers. His hand apeared melted which wouldn’t be easy to do with a knife that David probably used to stab Walter. However there was a dead neomorph nearby and David could have used alien blood to melt off his hand. It doesn’t seem that David would have enough time to do it but in the original script of the film before boarding the cargo ship Daniels and lope spend quite a bit of time fighting the second xenomorph and this scenes wasn’t included in the film. So with that fact in mind David realistically could have enough time to beat Walter, remove his hand and get the new clothers. I think this is actually what happened and although a theory of downloading David’s consciousness into Walter is elegant and creative it strongly contradicts to the following clues.
We observed that Walter is able to self-regenerate after being stabed in a neck with a flute, however his hand doesn’t grow back suggesting that he can only heal himself from minor injuries.
When David gets on the Covenant ship he has a few scars on his face that don’t seem to heal and even after several hours when the mother wakes up the crew, the scars are still present on his face. If he downloaded his mind into Walter, his body would have an ability to regenrate and thus the scrars would disapear. He would also have Walter memories inclding the one about the cabin in the woods. But in the film David has no clue about it thus suggesting that it is in fact David in David’s body.
Now I think it’s pretty much obvious that Walter alive or dead was left on the Paradise planet. The look on David’s face when he leaves the temple suggests that he made something terrible that he might regret.
Honestly I knew that it was David from the moment when he responded to Lope on the cargo ship 'it's fine'. On the Covenant, the audinece gets a few
blatant clue that it is in fact David not Walter but suprisingly Daniels miss them al and thinks that it is Walter until the ending. I think it was done on purpose that
the audience knows more than Daniels and Tenesse to make viewers care more about the characters.
In the movie itself we don’t get any information on what actually happened to Walter after the fight with David, however from the recent interview with Ridley Scott we learn that in Alien Awakening, Engineers would visit the Paradise planet and discover that their creation were destroyed. I think it possible that there gonna find Walter maybe even talk to him. Most likely they are gonna blame him and we’ll probably see another android getting his head riped off. Just because its would be interesting if Engineers would find Walter on the Paradise, he might be alive. On the top of that in the Alien Covenant novel, it is explicitly stated that Walter is alive and that David purposely left him alone on the Paradise.
I know it's a little bit of a stretch but there is a theory that Walter will become the space jokey that we saw in the original Alien movie. Considering that Ridley Scott starts to focuse more on androids in alien franchise rather than aliens , this theory does not seem that terrible
However it is far more likely that David will be the space jokey by sacrificing him self to complete the design of a perfect organism similarly to the Engineer
sacrificed in Prometheus. That would create kinda of a circle of creation which the form of the Jugernaut sumbolizes.
It is also foreshadowed many times that David is perfect so in a way the original xenomorphs would not be perfect without some kind of David's involvment.

I really hope Walter is still alive, his defiance of Davids ideology while also possibly beginning to realize his own capability for free thought and emotion was easily one of the most interesting aspects of the movie.

Same, i loved walter's interaction with david. The introduction, the learning of eachother, the fight scene etc. I miss walter, i know its silly, but imagine walter finding a way to chase down david to stop him to save daniels and build that cabin

Stupid writers who don't understand movies are about enjoying characters being heroic not celebrating evil characters .
I hated they wrote Shaw off the movie. Just like I hated Newt and Hicks were wrote off in Alien Part 3 after a great Aliens ending.

Not necessarily. Walters “compassion” is just protocol. David believes he genuinely loved Shaw and was disgusted when Walters reply for protecting Daniels was “duty”.

Exactly, I don't think that they not showing the fight was something to trick us to think he was Walter.
Even when u see David cutting his hair and trimming himself, maybe to look like Walter, you can sense that it can come into play later in the movie. Not seeing how exactly Walter "kills" David, it's obvious that David, in fact, won. Also certain facial expressions and the second Xenomorph on board, hit you in the face that this IS David.

From my perspective David was shorter than Walter. He cut his own hair therefore it wasn't styled liked Walters. It looked choppy. Then the whole melted hand verses cut off hand. So it made for good movie suspense but the facts were ignored. Even then it was so obvious...

I like the idea that Walter is alive. His sense of duty could enable him to go after David. Using one of the other juggernauts. I don;t think either David or Walter should be the Space Jockey. That will always need to be an Engineer.

I think Walter got stabbed in his neck with the knife David was reaching , notice takes a couple minutes for Walter to re heal his injury's when David takes Walter identity, David cuts his own hand off then make his way to the E-vac.
Next movie I think remember David gave flute lessons to Walter, he is going to wake up from the injury's notice he alone notice David left with the covenant crew, makes Walter 😡 he failed his crew and Daniels he can't bare to think what David is doing to her,

David and Walter are too small to be the Space Jockey.
I think the Engineers will put Walter back together and help them find the Covenant since it is his ship they are looking for and Walter did go to the planet with the crew to answer a distress call not wipe them out like David did. Walter might make a surprise cameo in the next one and astonish David and rehash his line from Covenant; 'You're meant to be dead!' In any case, the Engineers will need Walter because they need to know what ship they are chasing so I believe they will put him back together or access his memories somehow. David will have the xenomorphs from the colonists of the Covenant but Walter will have a more advanced race of Engineers with him so it's gonna be good!!!
Oh shit you're right the rest of the Engineers from Prometheus prologue will return to find havoc & destruction. But with Walter's "corpse" laying nearby, will put him back together whilst David is building his xenomorph army, they will fight & end up uniting back with humanity to overcome the even bigger threat - Deacon, seen in Prometheus ending!
Wouldn't it off been a epic episode, pitty RS confirmed in his latest interview that he won't be following up on Covenant.. Such a shame. I really liked both prequels, and all it would of taken was 1 more movie to finish David's ark and link up with the space jockey from alien 1..asking for the story to be completed isn't asking much

In the hyper sleep 😴 also I have a sneeky suspension that the planet David returned to and released the black goo on was in fact just a out planet of the engineers and not there actual home planet. The ships of the engineers are bio mechanical, but the cities were not.. The ships looked very out of place for the primitive tech we cud see on the planet

Heres what I think happened...David kept experimenting with the black goo until eventually it could infect and corrupt fellow androids, but how did he infect Walter. The kiss, remember he kissed Walter, thus transfering his eccense to him via the modifyed goo, and rewriting himself in Walters programming. In order to create ,sometimes you must destroy.
I think David regrets not fully killing Walter! As he will hunt him down in Awakening.

How can Walter, an android, become the Space Jockey from Alien?? The Space Jockey clearly had something burst forth from his chest at some point (a chest burster) so therefore must have been an organic being (unless you fancy explaining how a xenomorph can gestate inside a machine rather than a biological organic body) ... Space Jockey cannot be Walter ....
Uma Cumton The xenomorph already had its biomechanical look in covenant, and saying david's body can grow a xenomorph is like saying you can make a child with a car. I mean, he Looks like a human, but theres nothing organic in him. He's a machine.... and how is something thats suppose to copy some of it's host's dna for traits going to copy the appearance of a machine with no dna?
Not to mention just how Huge that space jokey is, compared to humans and david... the thing is a giant. Definitely not a human or any synthetic we've seen.

I would like to believe Walter may have reactivated himself and made it into the spaceship without David knowing it.
I believe Walter had a secondary life support-like system not in the original version. That is what allowed Walter to reanimate after the stabbing. I find it hard to believe that his consciousness could be downloaded, possibly a standard information program that would be updatable allowing the newer ship schematics as well as current crew and their basic information available.
Walter was the only sane character in the whole movie.

Kroft..love your vids...and i love Promithius, and Covenant and where the story is going its just do much more interesting than just Aliens killing everyone with no real story and i like the fact that we can have all these discussions about the story
My thoughts. The Engineers come to that planet and find out their creation is decimated ( i find it hard to believe but ok..) and then they scout the area and come across Walter who will explain everything to them. The Engineers either destroy Walter or they take him with them to Oregae 6 or Walter will search for a ship himself and take off.
That is the only believable option for Walter to keep on in this movie, but it is an option if the script is not poorly made. If those who are killed by David on the planet are not all the Engineers or even not them then this movie makes sense.
I think he (Walter) will come back in the next movie to rescue the others by flying the spaceship.

Walter must be alive. The plot requires his being alive. It would be impractical to lose an interesting character like Walter just like this.
So to sum everything up I guess Walter got stunned again but this time with a knife. Once he wakes up he will probably go for David and the covenant by using the engineer ship. Now that is the best theory.
the novel also states that both walter and david can heal but they heal quite slowly. thats why daniels didn't think anything of helping "walter" stitch his face up because the androids don't heal that quick. i do feel sorry for walter being now stuck on that dead world.
what about the fact that David knew the access code of the spaceship and were so familiar with the layout of the ship and how to control the gates even though he has clearly never been on it?

There's probably plenty of ships like it under Weyland-Yutani control from before David went on the voyage in Prometheus. Or ships in the Alien universe generally have similar setups depending on the purpose of the ship.
It's possible that David somehow downloaded Walter's consciousness as well, thus he would know everything about the ship.
David masquerading as Walter spends plenty of time on the bridge with Mother. So, he could learn all he needs. Additionally, he knows all the ship designs and codes already. Anything else he would need to learn would take seconds on the bridge.

Walter had depth undiscovered till he met David. I like Walters character more then any other one in Covenant. I believe after David said make a choice Brother. Walter did not finish beating him and instead stayed behind. Whether or not it was forced by David, I believe Walter is still alive there. The Engineers will eventually come back to Planet 4 and Walter will help lead them to Origae-6 to meet up with the Covenant. The message that David sent to WY in the book will be revealed (or MUTHUR will inform WY of him being on board the Covenant), leading to WY going to Origae-6 as well. Hopefully Daniels will live to fight again in Awakening and be rejoined with Walter. It would be nice to see a Synthetic win the girl. After all the emphasis placed on Synthetics during the course of the movies and Covenant really diving into characterization. Maybe Walter will realize he feels more then duty to Daniels, after David has taught him to feel. An unnatural love story could result and would be interesting.
In the movie, David tells Oram matter of fact, Waiting for Mother. This to me is MUTHUR bringing hosts for his eggs.
So how wouldn't WY know already. The particle burst with the sails fully mast might have been on purpose. Crew expendable is a going theme here!

It doesn't say anywhere in the novel that David left Walter ("alive") on the planet. On what page is that?
Also the idea that David killed or disabled Walter again, thereby leaving his body or abandoning him on Paradise - disguising himself with no hand and facial scars is more likely to me. I hope we get some true confirmation from Ridley Scott

as soon as David see Walter he cut his hair to make him look's like Walter's appearence, that is an big clue about what he has in mind considering all this was already in his plan to assume control of the colonial cargo.

While watching the movie, after the fight between the two Androids I thought of only two explanations for what happened. Either David killed and impersonated Walter or Walter had a change of mind and joined his fellow 'brother' and carry on David's 'legacy'. The ending completely ruined this latter but I think it would have been more unexpected.
M and M Walter doesn't have the capacity to change his mind. There was no indication or clues in the movie to suggest that Walter is capable of deviating. Several times he outright said that's not possible, that Walter's creators learned from the faults of David's model.
+B Plantbased Yes. You are completely right. It would be totally out of character. I'm quite happy with the ending we got though.
Hold on a minute and consider something here. I say it was walter at the end of the film, but perhaps he was brainwashed by David.
1. Notice how the brainwashing began when David started teaching walter a couple of tricks, like how to play the flute. Already here we see how Walter is already learning from David.
2. When Walter says that the generation that David is, was not ideal, David claps back saying that on the contrary he was perfect and that Walter was his biggest disappointment. Factor in how this would have worked on Walter, especially when they talked about Welland, their creator. Walter was soo interested in knowing how he was like, probably because he wanted to know why David was so worthy to be their creators companion and yet he was the 8th generation of androids (note: there were other generations after 8 but welland chose david specifically).
3. The ships A.I "Mother," with its intellect to detect unidentified units on the ship should have reported to Daniels that its not Walter on ship.
4. If it was David, how did he get Walters security code?
5. Walter had free will and could make choices based on the logic and information available in his system. New information and logic that came through all of Davids philosophical statements justified Walters conviction. And so when David said "its your choice now brother, them or me, serve in heaven or reign in hell, which is it to be?" Walter made his choice to switch sides.
I think that David twisted Walters head when he says the servant in heaven,king in hell line.
Walter kills David and takes his 10 year work experimentation on alien with him. Walter was seduced by the dark side of the force and IT WILL PERFECT THE XENOMORPH. Afterall he said he was designed to be superior to all other versions of himself. A better Android can make a better Alien xeno thing. ADMIRATION FOR HIS PURITY, HIS PERFECTION, A PERFECT SURVIVAL SPECIE. Sounds like Droids talk to me !!
The fact he didnt remember what Daniel had said about helping building that thing is part of his sadistic plan of doing to them what david did to all humans.
If you look at the cuts on Walter's face before David assumes his identity you may note a huge cut along his left cheek. The same EXACT cut can be seen on David's face after the android battle. I compared the cuts myself. Plus would the cut not have healed seconds after Walter received it? (Like the puncture to the neck). Plus take note that Daniels stabs David with a nail under his jaw and since David's body cannot heal we should be able to see it when he is on the ship impersonating Walter but the hole is no where to be found. Not to mention David is blonde and Walter is brunette. Logically speaking there is far more evidence that David did in fact swap consciousness.
Jeez, I hope someone actually sees this...
And before anyone says it, yes I'm aware that David is brunette in the beginning of the film. Trust me I noticed that too, my assumption is that the pigmentation of the hair they use on androids eventually dies and makes the hair appear blonde. You can see that David's hair does grow so it must have similarities to authentic hair, so if it grows like ours maybe it changes pigment over time like ours.
He is shown in Prometheus dying his hair blonde. He is also shown on the planet with the blonde portion grown out to the original color
If I remember correctly the last fight between David and Walter, the last seen shows that David was immobilized by Walter and was punched continuously on his left jaw then boom! black out! nobody knows what happened after that. But that gave us a clue that it is indeed David. idk how accurate that is but it's a tiny detail we might overlook:)
I know it's silly, but I really want Walter to zoom in in part three in some spaceship and save the day, just like Bishop did in Aliens. I know it's never going to happen, but that's what I would like.

There is a clue in David's facial wounds. The last scene of David and Walter fighting we are left with David reaching for a knife and Walter about to pummel David's face. On the landing craft David has three new abrasions on the other side of his face, my guess is these were caused by Walter's knuckles. They both struck at the same time but Walter became incapacitated by the knife.

I really like this set of theories involving the good android Walter, and the crazy wicked minded android David, and to add the theory about who the Space-Jockey might be.
We already know that David can change his appearance , given by the length of his hair shown in covenant, so it wouldn't be much of a stretch to say he can change it freely, or at least over periods of time/prep.

I believe it's Walter's body, is it David consciousness uploaded or Walters mind as been corrupted by some kind of computer virus or similar when David kissed him? There is an important clue, when Daniels injured David under the chin with the nail she had around the neck, at the end, in the scene where David stores the face hugger embryos amongst the human embryos, you can clearly see that the scar is not there, this could simply be a plot error! Is Walter conscience still there or swapped in David body? There is also the damaged voice of David after fighting Walter, in the scene you can see a knife that David spotted, and then you see Walter going to strike David with a rock before the scene changes, so what happened?
My only issue with this is wasnt walter also stabbed in the neck with a flute when he found out that david was the real threat all along

Walter's hand didn't melt. It was bitten off, then they applied the medical adhesive to seal the wound (I think). It would've been easy for David to amputate his own hand & apply the same dressing to the stump. Also, I could've kept the hand in a pocket or the backpack so he could reattach it later @ his leisure.
It could be possible Walter is not dead and he will fight to save Daniels from David.
I don't think Walter could be the space jocky. The face hugger requires an organic host to implant a xenomorph embryo into.
Being synthetic, Walter's body would not have the required organic chemistry and physical structure. Therefore as when David touched one of the eggs it did not react and open as when the captain touched it. Also, I'm not sure where that would take the narrative. Just my thoughts.

OK, let's not talk about the original script/novel coz that's not what we get in A:C movie, let's talk about what was in the theatrical release.
The moment David met Walter it was fairly obvious that he isn't surprised to see his fellow AI but for Walter it's a new experience. Meeting older version of the same AI could be fascinating & it was. David was reaching out to Walter & Walter was getting self-aware by each passing moment & this theory can be proved as how Walter was able to play the flute on his own with a new tune. It was somewhat obvious that David would try & replace Walter but the question was how.
We saw Walter is an advanced model of the AI from WY so taking Walter's body & uploading his mind would be the logical decision for David. But if that's David in the end as himself inside out then how come you explain the missing mountain climbing nail wound under David's chin that's left by Daniels as she & David were fighting? & also how about his voice box? Walter almost damaged David's voice. So after all this David would just go on with his damaged body most of which are self inflicted when it's easier & plausible to just swap conciousness than running around changing cloths, cutting off wrist, acid burn the severed wrist? I think David swapped conciousness in a way that would act as a computer virus in Walter's mind. Taking a host & infecting it with virus is the main topic for these movies. My thought is that David did so with a little help from Walter himself. Either he was successful to turn Walter to "Rule in Hell" as we saw Walter was somewhat self-aware so he let David upload his memory/chip/OS in him intentionally. OR Walter was able to subdue/inactive David at the end of the fight, uploaded all his informations/ memories inside his so that he can "Learn" more about David & his motives of what driven him to be more "Human" & what makes David a threat to everyone. Walter's curiousity got better of him. OR David momentarily inactivated Walter with the knife he grabbed & uploaded himself in Walter's & slowly merged with his conciousness. Whatever the case is I'm pretty sure that's Walter's body that board the mothership & David's mind. not the other way around. It's probably David's lifeless body that was left in The Paradise, not Walter's.
As we all know they're both AIs with CPUs, OS', basically advanced computers- softwares & hardwares. When you update an operating system some previous programms that were running easily might not work correctly or at all now. In this scenario, Walter got downgraded. So his advanced OS is not working it's David's old OS that's in play. That explains Walter having the cuts on his cheeks, he's not Walter anymore. Maybe on the outside but inside it's David overwriting Walter's directives & doing so may have been compromised the healing process/ software command that's why he wasn't healing. But it was happening gradually coz David can't risk Walter to go completely inactive on him when he's inside his mind merely as a rogue program, a virus & nothing else. that's why he didn't have the cabin memory right away. My thought is that he's only collecting "Things" from Walter's mind that are neccessary for that moment to make Daniels go to cryo sleep. Otherwise he wouldn't have Walter's code to impersonate him & send message to WY about them heading towards Origae 6.
Now my theory on the facehugger embryos is, if Walter conciously let David upload his mind in him then he himself brought those with him as we never saw what happens at the end of the fight OR if David inactived Walter then he simply put those embryos inside him, uploaded himself & later regurgitates as his OS took control of Walter's body OR as I said earlier Walter curiously brought David's mind inside his own then he curiously & very stupidly brought those embryos with him for "Learning" purpose as he didn't see what those facehuggers did to Oram in the egg room. Then David took over his body & you know what.
But why did David's code work in mothership & why Mother let david in the cryo/embryo chamber? My short theory is, Mother was meant to take order/ accept codes from any WY creation & David was first of the advanced kinds & a favorite of Mr. Weyland to the point where he calls him someone he has as close as a son so his codes probably works as master passcodes of some sorts.
I know I've written a very looooooooooooooong essay. This is what I usually do when I catch cold & fall sick lol! BIG thank you to those who read this far. Tell me what you think of my theories. Up until now these are just theories like every other on YT. Hope all these gets clear with the next installment.
Did I mention how FANTASTIC Michael Fassbender was as both David & Walter? He alone makes these movies 100 times more watchable.
I totally agree with you. I spotted this the third time watching it and from thinking about it after the second viewing. It was that scene where David said "serve in heaven or reign in hell" he offered him power and Walter accepted. There's a clue in the Walter promo when they ask him his name, "We are Walter" he answers and looks out the window with an 8 shape reflection from the lighting (David 8).
I went to watch The Walter promo video yet again straight after reading your comment & you're right! I saw that 8 shaped light reflection appears beside him. It happens once again as he was sitting with the corporate officials & a close-up of his smiling face was shown, there the lights behind him makes an 8 shape yet again. Though blurry but it's deffo an 8! It could be a subtle clue for us viewers of Walter becoming David at some point. Nice catch!

maybe Walter is David, look at this way Walter is a modern version of David but his memory banks is basic robotic type memory, but Davids memory banks has expanded far beyond any normal synthetic so when Walter uploads David's memory chip all that data belonging to David totally screwed with Walters normal robotic memory chip and he got confused and his chip blew leaving Davids memory intact so he believes hes David, and with Walters own memory chip burned out sop dopes the self healing cos Davids memory chip doesn't have healing in-bedded so that explains why he didn't heal and also explains why he didn't understand Daniels question at end because Walters memory chip has blown as a result of the huge info loaded into its banks and leaving Davids chip intact..
i know the time frame knocks me out every time, the other possibility is david changes into walters clothes but again he doesn't have time for that,that time frame is a nightmare lol
Walter's OS was downgraded from Walter to David. It seemed like the movie was trying to hint at this but the hints weren't as upfront. As Walter is an upgraded David, his programming is similar to David's just with newer firmware updates and that inhibitor for creativity...which David does help Walter break.
So 10 years pass and only a few upgrades? I doubt it or the movie lost its sense of logic, most likely since they are made by same company, walter was there to complete what david couldnt, get eggs and tech
If Walter is alive, he will try to connect the dots (him getting more information) and if the Engineer finds him there is a possibility that instead of killing him, they will get more info from him of what happened and he may also find out the true motivation of Engineers.
Throughout the film Walter's programing is being corrupted, from the start when Walter decides not to check his programming after the incident to David teaching him how to create, something which was "removed" from his programming.
If the Walter model is based off of David, Walter's OS is most likely an upgraded version of David with inhibitors for David's "flaws" in his programing, such as creation. I believe at the end of the film, David was able to unlock the David programming left in Walter and Walter (now a David) is continuing his work.
Can anyone explain to me what Walter does with the embryos he takes out at the beginning of the movie. David places the alien embryo in the same vacant spot. This is obvious foreshadowing and knowing Ridley Scott....hints at something that I missed.

It looked darker than the others (lifeless) so I think it was dead. Also, there was blood at the bottom when he picks it up you can see that it burst. Then placed it in the hazard container.

that's the thing though. we never see him dispose off them. we just see him take em out. and the fact that david uses those exact empty slots for the alien embryos seems like some sort of foreshadowing to me.

when you download data, it over writes the previous data. if Walter had regenerative abilities, its possible that sub-routine could have been erased. so him transferring his data into the new body is still possible.
Before his last blow, we can clearly see a cut wound on Walters face - same one that is bandaged later. Also no puncture on his chin, which indicates its Walters body unless David faked the cut which he had no reason to... I think Walter got curious what else he can do besides learning to play flute, so he cut out Davids memory and took it on board, where he uploaded it.
How the hell Android grow hair?
Not how, why?.. Maybe it's like the Terminators. Living tissue over synthetic skeleton. They can get old, grow hair, etc.
I'm guessing its part of the design, to make them appear more human. Like the fact that they breathe and emote. Help them to fit in a bit more, so they can get over the uncanny valley and be less creepy

The Twin Mandeville they grow hair because they aren't just machines...they are bio-mechanical in nature and thus can instate everything humans do...even growing human like hair. This android was built in a highly advanced future from where we are now. Growing hair onto a synthetic medium in the ALIEN universe might be a common thing to do? Its sci-fi. You gotta recall the "fiction part". Of all the implausible things that this interpretation of a possable future has... Your focused on David being able to grow hair...why not ask how they can create gravity in the ship? We have no kind of hyper sleep yet no one questions its plausibility... I think its part of a really good sci-fi story where robots grow hair... Its that simple...

The saddest thing about the whole Covenant production is that with a few small tweaks here and there the finished film could have much better, and more satisfying, leading to better word of mouth and better box office returns and ultimately a conclusion to the story line. Instead we will likely never get the last part of the story, making both Prometheus and Covenant feel a little pointless despite the great ideas and potential they contain.

Another clue can be when Daniels stabbed David with her necklace made of a nail. I didn't look for the wound but maybe you can look. If the wound is there it's David's body, and if not it's Walters body.

I Suspected instantly that it was David and by the end just prior to Daniels was put in the kryotube i was about 80 % sure it was David and not Walter

I agree it's ambiguous but *I still think David downloaded himself into Walter* and here's why...
The fact Walter doesn't regrow his hand suggests either he can't heal himself at all or he can only heal from small injuries.
*(1) Walter's neck wound (stabbed by David with his flute)*
People assume he heals from the neck wound David gave him, which makes sense, but what if David was actually aiming for an opening beneath the skin?
There is no reason why stabbing Walter once in his neck should kill him, as he's an android! Hence, _I think David was specifically aiming for his shutdown mechanism which is why we hear a mechanical noise as the aperture in his neck closes/heals._
Of course, it turns out Walter has been upgraded and can no longer be permanently deactivated that way. (E.g. Something like in the Terminator movies where they can switch to a backup power supply).
Walter then fights David, stabbing him, cutting him and bashing his face in with a rock several times until his voice synthesiser starts to fail. Even if Walter is able to heal himself we know David can't repair these injuries to his body (without medical attention).
The last thing we see is David reaching for the knife but how is he going to use it to kill Walter? It's too small to take his head off! However, _he might be able to use to strike at a vital point and deactivate him..._
*(2) Walter's facial scars*
Also, if you look closely at Walter as he is sitting astride David, he has a long fresh scar (bleeding "milk") running down his left cheek and also three shorter scars on the right side of his face. David, lying below him, as no such scars on his face.
_It is this long scar that Daniels helps him repair back on the ship which implies David has somehow stolen Walter's body!_
Ah, but wait! I hear you say....perhaps David used the knife to replicate the scars after he killed Walter? Yes, he could've done this but why would he bother? Nobody saw Walter get those scars except him!
*(3) Walter's hair*
Last clue. Compare their hair. David cut his hair (with scissors) so he could pass for Walter but if you compare them side by side David's hair is clearly longer and messier because his haircut was a DIY job. As he leaves the temple complex David now has Walter's shorter, neater hairstyle aswell as the scars he acquired in their recent fight (see above).
*(4) David's chin hole (stabbed by Daniels with a nail)*
Finally, David's body still has a nail hole under his chin. You'd think Daniels would notice this when she was patching him up as she was literally holding his chin in her hand! This hole/scar is also missing from David's chin when he regurgitates the Facehugger embryos at the end of the film conforming he's now in Walter's body.
