Hey Dave, I agree with the AOW being a “frictionless” process. I’ve been AOWs and have struggled because I made it too involved ( minimum amount of annotations, writing a 2 paragraph response modeled from They say, I say). It was just too much for the kids. Now I just have them read the article and complete a 4321 Organizer. While they read they jot down 4 questions, 3 important points, 2 opinions/ how they feel, and lastly the author’s claim.

AOW has changed my ever-loving teacher life because they opened the door to…the pop-up debates. I get to see the bright, intelligent side of my students as they express themselves in MY CLASS. Let’s be honest- I can’t always capture that type of critical thinking on an assessment. But I can provide the opportunity in a pop-up debate, and when I see it happen in class, it makes me smile big🤗.

I'm also reworking AoW for 2021-2022 school year. Looking forward to checking out the article and continuing my thinking on the extracurricular assignments. Cheers, Dave!

I think for my class (7th grade) doing the annotations in a different platform is too much. I think I'll try putting the articles in Google Docs. Then students can highlight and add their comments directly in their copy of the article.

Tracy I think this is a really good idea.

Have you ever gotten pushback from parents/admin on the subject matter of AOWs you've used? Just curious. (So nice to see your face pop up on my RUclips home screen, Dave :) ).

You know Shelby, I have gotten pushback before, and that's led me to be more careful with how I present the articles to students. Basically, if something's controversial, I'll try to succinctly explain the controversy.

I love using Kami for annotating. They were running a COVID special and so I have no idea how hard/expensive it will end up being in 21-22. Our district ended up purchasing a license because so many departments, including Math, loved it. Just a thought/possibility.

Gallagher’s AOWs are a bit high-level for my 8th graders, though I love the content. I don’t want to spend a ton of my time prepping for AOWs either. Newsela and commonlit and Actively Learn have some good resources as well as digital annotation tools. Are you familiar with any of these formats and would you recommend them? Or do you have another recommendation? Great to still be tagging along with you, Dave. Going to read the book again this summer to reacquaint myself.
