My dad and my 20 year old son had their first political “discussion” before thanksgiving dinner tonight
My dad said “you raised a boy with some strong opinions about things and he’s not afraid to stand up for em… I like that. Good job.”
Made my year.
I have political discourse with my father all the time... we never get heated, and there is always an air of respect. We don't agree on a lot of things, but he never tells me I am wrong. Through those conversations, I feel like he has become more open-minded on many topics he would have flat out refused to support before. We still don't agree on many topics, but I know he has a good heart, and he raised me the same.

That's a start. Every ultra-leftist has strong opinions, just as every fascist does. Praising either as somehow reasonable is a mistake. The discussion is useful, but in and of itself is not the solution.

These days it is not uncommon to see comments about Hitler's Germany, making comparisons with today's goings-on, refreshing our memory of past abhorrences that frighteningly echoes out in our society all too loudly today.
It stirs more personal memories in many of us, too.
I'm a Norwegian. My grandfather, working as a railroad maintenance man during the time of the German occupation, was by pure luck spared a very certain death when the Norwegian resistance, in a last minute change of plans, decided NOT to blow up the railroad where a German regiment were to travel. Same Germans who forced my grandfather to go before their train on this little contraption that he used (I do not remember what it is called), just so he would be the one blown into the air, were there to be any railroad "sabotage."
This was before my mother was conceived (and her younger siblings).
Sometimes when looking back on this episode in my family's history, I am very aware of how the existence of myself, my brother, our cousins, and innumerable more human beings, boils down to pure luck.
And yes of course this somewhat personal experience/history, combined with reading loads of History, has me also very aware of what fascism looks and acts like.
Added to that, I'm at the moment living in a South American Banana Republic, which nefarious, stupid, inept, and ruthless regime is sadly, tragically, becoming increasingly authoritarian.
And this I'll say: Should trump get into the White House again, Banana Republics will become peanuts compared to his Covfefe Republic.
And the first thing he'll embark on is a revenge spree, naturally, because that's his nature.
Things will be ugly.
Don't ever give him the chance, you good, sensible people of USA, *don't you ever give him that chance.*
I've posted this writ before, here and there and now and then, so some may have seen it already, and some may have grown tired of seeing it.

Things are ugly now with Trump running again in 2024. Like you stated, he has already mentioned what he plans to do if he does get back in the White House. I feel that his vengeance spree will be entirely MUCH WORSE. Think of a runaway train or an avalanche. Before it comes to its final end, it will destroy everything in its path. Nothing is spared along in the destruction. That is Trump. Trump doesn't care about this country. Trump only cares about Trump.
I wish your message would reach those who have fallen into his cult. I can guarantee you that me and my house will vote for democracy this time and every time!
The idea of a politician talking about golden ****** und ho***** and all that stuff would have been entirely insane just 10 years ago. He normalized crazy, he normalized despicable. He dragged everyone down with him.

I sat from 9:30am to 3am on January 6th/7th watching:
First: the broadcast of the Stop the Steal Rally
Second: I turned on C-Span to watch the counting of the votes live in the capitol.
Third: When the mob started to turn into a riot outside I put on an amazingly curated Twitch stream with every live feed the streamer could find (this included a dozen or so videos from cell phones from people inside the building, rioters inside the building, but it also included Lisa Dejardins from NPR hiding behind a desk and transmitting the news with rioters feet away from her, and other similar streams from other news broadcasts). This was all AMAZING live video of people breaking windows and storming into the capitol. Incredible footage all happening in front of me, mostly broadcast by the actual rioters themselves.
Fourth: The riot was contained after a few hours and Congress eventually went back into session. I saw several important Republican figures stand up and say “enough is enough”, most emphatically was Lindsey Graham, and then immediately watched as many of those congresspeople voted against certifying the election in what was the most chickenshit move I have probably ever seen. But they did it.
Fifth: I watched Mike Pence follow his constitutional responsibilities and vote to certify the election to declare Biden the winner.
I was absolutely exhausted. I watched, with my own eyes, as a mob literally overran the defenses at our capitol and nearly began summarily executing those political opponents that stood in their way. Some of the twitch streams I saw would later be on tv, but not all of them. The folks who say it was all a set up or that it wasn’t that bad didn’t see what I saw, they didn’t see people live streaming as they nearly took over our government. It was embarrassing, it was disgusting and it was scary. And three hours later Republican congresspeople were voting not to certify.
History will record that day as a black mark on democracy and will judge it correctly, even if MAGA people right now don’t.
This story needs to be told! You have to get it out friend! The way you tell it is compelling and raw...It has grip.

I remember asking my dad when I was young "who decides how much congress gets paid?" He said 'they do'. That pretty much made all the pieces fit into place. The entire govt from lifelong, president-appointed SCOTUS all the way down to small local courts where you are guilty until proven innocent, our representatives are not us by any means.

At this point Trump reminds me of Peter Griffin in the early episode of Family Guy in which Lois "helps" Peter during game night by asking his the preschooler questions for Trivial Pursuit. Peter then walks around bragging and denigrating everyone else for not being as smart as he believes himself to be. I just worry that there will be a large portion, not just of the US, but in the world, that will develop the same sort of stress tumour we see Lois developing as she suppresses her rage and what her life has become.
I'm kinda disappointed that the bit about Kevin McCallister didn't include "he came up to me, small guy, little guy, tears streaming down his face and said to me, 'Mr. President, sir, I'm lost an need help. Can you,' he asked me this, this was real, 'Can you please, please I'm begging, tell me where the lobby is?' And I helped him. And no one ever talks about that."

At the risk of sounding morbid, there is one this working against Trump. His antics at undermining all the public health advice Faucci was giving out as he tried to save as many lives as he could, ended up affecting Trump supporters a hell of a lot more than it did those who oppose him. Even the 2022 elections noted a statistically significant drop in the number of GOP supporters voting. I guess ignoring the mask and vaccine mandates had the sort of affect on his cultists we usually see only in the Darwin awards.
I'm not sure what you mean by Georgia being the last stand in 2020 when Trump needed 3 states he lost - Georgia, Arizona and Wisconsin - to get to a tie in the electoral college. He contested the results in 6 states he lost, those 3 plus Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania, in an effort to change the result.
