"Math is a problem for these republicans." So is history, science and reading comprehension.
Don't forget ethics .
Pretty much education in total.
...and logic.
And PE and Sex Ed too
A lot are evangelicals.....they believe if God says 2+2=5 ....then it must be
I am horrified to hear that The Sea Captain was ripped off by George Santos. Thoughts and prayers in these stormy times, Cap.
Nancy Mace trying to have an Easy A moment is beyond sad. It’s been 13 years, fetch was more likely to happen.
Stop trying to make "fetch" happen.
Ironically, “stop trying to make fetch happen” is what was made to happen

Seth and his writers are on fire since coming back. The writing on this Closer Look was insanely tight. The callback structure was exquisite.
The little in-jokes that are clearly 1000% funnier to them than to us makes it feel like the team is really tight. Love it.
The meta closer look opener was 10/10
What that Rep said about this whole sad idiotic ploy indeed IS a great intro to A Closer Look! :D
That Republican clearly knew how to write in Seth's voice better than the writer who wrote the Walter Cronkite yo mama joke
things like this confirm my belief that seth and the team are still under-rated.
I love how Seth brings in his whole team either directly or indirectly. Closer Look isn't just about its front man. Great work!
Yeah, i get the impression seth is actually nice to the people who work with him
Correction: There's no way Mar-a-Lago is an easy gig for spies. I'm sure they have to listen to days of droning on about windmills, toilets, 2016, and lies about winning golf tournaments, and porn stars he didn't have to pay before he breaks on to a tangent of any use.
Excruciating.
They get hazard pay and extra health care coverage to pay for injuries sustained due to excessive eye rolling

"Sir. Maybe the toilet wouldn't take so many times to flush if you stopped throwing documents in there."
Santos needs to be removed ASAP- He is a disgrace to the office he stole by deceit!!
George Santos not having the guts to answer questions from reporters really exemplifies the GOP today.
Except for that gay part. In the words of a Republican spokesman, "We don't do gay."
George is the personification of "hold on. I'm going through a tunnel...."
Trump 2024
Thats evert politician today. Biden ran like a hoe after giving briefing Israel Hamas war
I think it’s about lack of intelligence more than guts. Not that it really matters.
The thing that drives me nuts: I learned how to lie due to an abusive environment. If I couldn't make it look like I was meeting every expectation, even the unspoken ones, my life was a living hell.
And then I grow up and people are following obvious liars, constantly. They're BAD AT IT, they put no effort into it, and expect people to just Not Check, even at ascendant levels of government.
There's Lying Because I Decided I'm Doing It, and Lying Because You Caught Me. Both need a different touch. If you've decided you're gonna do the thing and wanna lie about it, planning and forethought has to go into it. Instead these are a lot of Lying Because I Was Caught lies, where a person decided to do the thing first with the assumption that they'd get away with it, and lies come later to be shouted over very obvious explanations.
I was told politicians had some special skill for deceptive speech, and that's why they're in politics. This, like meritocracy, is a myth. They're falling over themselves like children, babbling incoherently, and expecting a pass
I refuse to be ruled by geriatric children.
So glad Seth is back. I wouldn’t have gotten through the last five years without Seth.

The fact that Rep. Mace doesn't understand what the "A" stands for that she is wearing make me wonder if Republicans have read ANY books in their lives?! The fact that she doesn't get how ridiculous it is for her to wear that kind of t-shirt says a lot about the modern GOP.
it's like she's PROUD of her ignorance
And Hester Prynne had sense enough not to be proud of it. She got a raw deal.

The GOP loses their mind when Fetterman wears a hoodie.....but it's ok for Nancy Mace to label herself an Adulterer.

@@ggjohnson5754 - Don't give her any ideas. She'd LOVE to have even more unwarranted attention.
Nancy Mace referencing Nathaniel Hawthorn’s The Scarlett Letter without having read the book is the most pathetic & hilarious thing both this year.
She also said she didn't know about Jordan's sordid past when a wrestling coach at Ohio state.
I wrote my college lit thesis on Hawthorn. A lot of his work deals with the freedom and healing that comes with facing your sin head-on, being honest and open about it vs trying to hide or deny it. In Scarlett Letter, the woman who wore the letter was publicly shamed, but came around to being an accepted and honored member of the community. The man who impregnated her was able to hide his sin and it destroyed him. Couldn't be a better metaphore for the republican party right now refusing to face and be honest with its shame.
I feel like she hasn't read The Scarlet Letter, nor has she seen the modern semi-remake movie Easy A, but she HAS seen a gif from the movie of Emma Stone looking cool and walking in slo mo with her scarlet A, and that's what she's basing her whole stunt on.
It's how many republicans get books banned at the local level now
Whenever Mace speaks, it's one of those strung together word-salad right wing buzzword diatribes just like MTG, who she resembles more and more.
When I saw the letter on Mace I was like, did she get caught committing adultery and her husband made her wear it? We are not sending our brightest to Congress. We deserve better. Stop voting for idiots
There’s something profoundly wrong with a political system where a thing like Santos can get elected.
More people should pay attention to what you just wrote. At which point do the people just say NO and you either do what we sent you to Washington for or we vote you out. Stop just voting name recognition and pick someone that represents your interest.
We are too stupid to force the idea of standards (educational, passing a knowledge based exams, or even a through background check) for people to run for office and be put on a ballot. It’s terrifying that all these people need to get their hands on the levers of power is to be backed by local party offices. And sadly, it’s the people in power who got there because there are no standards who we would need to enact some set of standards for us to protect our fairly fragile system. Watch the destruction continue and for the slide into the abyss to accelerate over the next decade or two.
The Republican clown show rolls on.
And that they can't or won't get rid of him either. He shouldn't be able to just stay, with all he's done.

Steve Scalise is arguably a better candidate than Jim Jordan, but in a one-on-one contest that's like a choice between a wet turd and a wet turd with corn in it.
At least the one with corn in it technically has nutritional value

#Correction: when discussing the Scarlet Letter around 9:56, you say the A "wasn't a fashion statement", but Hester Prynne purposefully makes the A beautiful with "flourishes of gold thread". Her choice to embrace the A and wear it with pride is an important theme in the novel, which makes Seth's characterization of her rather ironic.
A really sharp segment. Thanks for helping keep us sane!
The Scarlet Letter bit is actually a pretty solid example of how Republicans will often hear a term somewhere, not understand what it means, not bother to look it up, not ask anyone for an explanation, and instead just assign a meaning to it based on their misunderstanding, and then be real proud of themselves for misusing it. Dare I say, it's very "woke" of them.

The republicans he serve are easily fooled
I absolutely agree. Seems like Republicans scraped the bottom of the barrel or shall I say, garbage bin.
What standards?
He got elected because he invented a person who had an impressive resume, with degrees, work, life experience, etc. Voters didn't vote for him, they voted for a fictional character
You can't be charged with an "alleged" crime. You're just charged with crimes. That's how charges work. It's a fact that Santos been charged with for-reals crimes. Whether he committed it or not is still up to question, so you would say, "Santos allegedly committed like, SO MANY crimes." Or just put "allegedly" at the end of speculating about his alleged crimes. Alleged crimes which he for realsies, no faking, has been charged with.

Mace’s hilarious attempt at a persecution narrative aside, her argument doesn’t even begin to make sense. (1) what does her being a woman have to do with anything, and (2) her side literally won?
It's almost as if actions have consequences! Which of course is a totally unfair outcome to Mace. I don't agree with the take that she doesn't understand the book, as funny as Seth's joke is - I believe the real issue is what you're calling out: that Mace is able with a straight face to claim that she's being persecuted. It's this kind of spin from disingenuous bad-actors that keeps the level of conversation so low. :(

A Closer Look may be the best bit on Late Night TV and this one was especially good. Seth's impersonation of Walter Cronkite and the punch line for that were spot on.
This was one of the best closer looks I have ever seen. That bit where he quoted the republican like an opening was perfect!
The indictment for George Santos has his name officially listed as: George Anthony Devolder Santos. I think the one of the most interesting parts of this whole thing is to see how many names, even as aliases, he will end up having by the end of this.
I’m sure he’ll try to get away with “well, that’s not me” when the jury find “George Anthony Devolder Santos” guilty.

I wonder how many times it will take them to elect a speaker this time. I'm hoping they go for 20.
The democrats only need four more republicans to join them for making Jeffries speaker.
the issue is finding any somewhat reasonable republican
That'll be the day
Anybody can dream...that's a good one
It may happen if the Democrats can convince 4 Republicans to vote for Jeffries simply to prevent the person they don't want from being nominated, but that's more of a wild dream than anything else.
That won't happen. No Republican would go for that.
However what they could (and I think should) do is select their own Republican for speaker. Getting 4 Republicans to support a Republican is absolutely plausible, even if its one the Democrats chose.
It's adorable how Mace is trying to look like she's read a single book that doesn't start with the word "Fifty".
That's not fair. "Fifty Years of Farm Machinery: From Starting Handle to Microchip" is a very insightful and surprisingly comprehensive account of agricultural mechanization in Britain.
One of the funniest "A Closer Look" performances ever. The writers plus Seth equals comedy excellence.
The fact that the GOP keeps Santos is beyond me. The same goes for the Democrats with Menendez.
Keeping obviously corrupt politicians in office is why people hate politics
Many democrats have been urging Menedez to resign.
Democrats have been calling for Menendez to resign and he is refusing. The Republicans are not screaming for his resignnation because of Santos.
Has Menendez been indicted yet?
The GOP is too worried about keeping their House majority. Santos could eat Republican grandchildren live on TV and they wouldn't vote to expel him from Congress.

To be fair, Hawthorne's Scarlet Letter is a bit hard and meandering to get through...but props to Seth for not dumbing down the actual and most critical plot point. I suppose the Congresswoman was trying to just use "Scarlet Letter" as a metaphor, but then she mixed an actual metaphor, with a "visual" plot point in the book, which makes little sense, even as a Classics Illustrated simplfied version of the novel, as I think Jake Tapper silently understood.
Don't be kind to Republicans, this is assigned in 6th grade here, if 6th grade literature is difficult, you shouldn't be in congress.
I'm happy to see that Seth can bring out his A+ Walter Cronkite impression that the youth of today can really identify with.
