He was Rhodesian, but he was also SADF. He even says in the movie at some point, likely because he was Rhodesian, that he never gave two shits about apartheid or the color of his fellow soldiers because it didn't matter when you were in combat. To put things in perspective, Rhodesia actually had more freedoms and rights for blacks than America - let alone South Africa - at the time. Blacks were integrated into the military, could become officers, ect. Which makes it incredibly insulting when people make revisionist history about Rhodesia being racist or supporting apartheid. If you were a black person, Rhodesia was probably the most free English-speaking country on the planet.
...And then Robert Mugabe came about.

matchesburn I think the fundamental issue is whether you’d have ended up with the same systematic issue you have in South Africa.
Although now in South Africa Blacks and whites have the same social and civil liberties, which may have been the case in Rhodesia (I can’t comment on that specifically I don’t know enough about that aspect), one would still have a situation where a racial minority still made up a disproportionate percentage of the landowners/civil servants/people in power etc. Rhodesia, even as jt progressed into a democracy, was still essentially a white minority ruled state, at the very least economically.
Although one could argue that Rhodesia had it existed would have lead to black emancipation earlier than South Africa, I think the issue of economic disparity which would be the constant cause of racial tensions and implicit oppression and violence would still be there?
Am I saying what Mugabe did when he straight up seized land was a good idea and handing it to cronies? Not at all. But I think it’s clear had Rhodesia survived, it would have, like South Africa, probably not done much to deal with the income and power disparity

I don't think the archaeologists realised the significance they just reported the facts.

There’s a pretty huge difference. I think you were trying to make a counter-argument saying we don’t say people from Russia are from the Soviet Union, but the thing is, Zimbabwe was just a name change from Rhodesia, with the territory remaining the same, while the Soviet Union lost a bunch of territory and was effectively dissolved in 1991, leaving it just Russia (not much of a union anymore so obviously it was just called Russia from then on).

Born to two proud Rhodesians, my ancestors arrived in Rhodesia in the 1890s from the UK. My father was a Selous Scout and youngest at age 18. My father always said he wished I could have grown up in the prime day Rhodesia there was nothing like it. Since I am quite a bit older now I am becoming more and more interested in Rhodesia and how it was.

Just because it's called _Zimbabwe_ now, doesn't mean he comes from Zimbabwe... if it was Rhodesia when he was born, and it was Rhodesia when he left, he would still be from Rhodesia even if the country didn't exist anymore... just like if someone emigrated from the USSR, they would still be "from" the Soviet Union, even if the USSR itself doesn't exist anymore.

Actually, no. You are incorrect. If a place does not exist any longer, they cannot now be from it. They are from nowhere, technically speaking. You said you wanted to be technically correct, though you said it wrong by calling it "grammatically incorrect". It is not a grammatical issue, but a technical and political one. He would be from the "former Rhodesia", to be exactly correct in political terms. That is what those from the "former USSR" say. However, they just say they are from Russia or Georgia or whatever the country is presently called. Reality trumps technicality, and no I am not talking about the Trump. :-))))

Some White Zimbabweans promptly returned.

The sad thing is when I was in Rhodesia in 1976 you could easily tell the Rhodesian accent ( more British sounding)from a South African accent.
Now when I speak to people, and they tell me they are Rhodesian , their accent sounds 100% South African.

@@alexmcdreamy9936 Essentially Rhodesia much like South Africa was a British African colony with a minority white lead government. The decolonization of Africa in the 60s and 70s led to a civil war between the white minority and black majority. Eventually, the white minority government conceded/lost and Robert Mugabe became the leader of the newly named Zimbabwe. So Rhodesia refers to the white minority colony and Zimbabwe refers to the independent country run by majority black.
So if they did further research they would have realized it was Northern and Southern Rhodesia which are now currently called Zimbabwe and Zambia respectively. Calling the whole of Rhodesia, Zimbabwe is the basic white washing of everyone who never does their research.
But to answer the question, yes they are called by their current names unless of course you love staying in the past and praising a life that is long gone. We should respect their names just the way everyone else respects names of other nations

Just happened upon this video. I had a friend from Zimbabwe. He never corrected me when I said he was from there. Didn't know it was so important to people from Rhodesia. The government took his large farm his family owned for generations. Made me quite angry thinking about how they did that to him and how he was essentially forced to leave the country and start over in the USA. Thankfully, he had some scientific training, so he made it to SA and then to the USA. I imagine, some are not so fortunate. Over his mantle, he had an old painting of his family's land in Rhodesia. How sad I was and still am for him.
