We come to you this week from the bush weekend escape of Mark and Wendy Rutherford, the owners of Gondwana Game Reserve whose journey getting here is as good a story as this their Garden Route getaway.
The foundations for this home, outside of Mossel Bay, were laid in the Kalahari Desert. That’s where wildlife manager Mark met visiting New York ad executive, Wendy. Sparks flew, they were married and when they decided to start a reserve of their own, they settled here amidst the indigenous Fynbos. They achieved that by breaking up the roofline and sinking the structure into the surrounds. African design and craft set the scene in the entrance hall where shields from Cameroon are mounted above a colourful riempie bench.
